CASE STUDIES

Van Boerum and Frank Associates (VBFA) were tasked with delivering a Net-Zero design for Odyssey Elementary School in Woods Cross, Utah. Designed by VCBO Architecture, the school also had its sight set on a LEED Gold rating. In order to meet the project goals, VBFA had to develop complex energy saving systems and strategies to ensure the building operated as efficiently as possible in terms of energy and costs.

The VBFA team developed a complex HVAC system which incorporates synergistic strategies to produce the most efficient building possible with current technologies. To validate the design and ensure it would perform as expected, VBFA had to search for a software that they could accurately model the system in. After some testing and trialling, they discovered that IESVE was the only suitable software option.

VBFA also used IESVE to carry out daylighting analysis which enabled them to choose the most energy efficient lighting options. The energy efficient lighting strategies chosen included; LED fixtures, perimeter daylight dimming controls, and space vacancy sensors to minimize installed lighting power and Wreduce operating power.

Using IESVE, VBFA were able to implement these energy saving design strategies, making the 84,000 sq. ft. structure the most environmentally advanced school building in operation in the state of Utah. It is the first Net Zero electrical school building in the state and is on track to achieve LEED® Gold certification.

USGBC’s LEED Automation program connects leading technology companies to the robust data platform that power LEED Online and a diverse suite of third-party applications. Many of our software tools significantly help streamline and assist the LEED certification process, including our online LEED project management software and advancements in our automated credit assessment and sophisticated LEED energy modeling tools.

Newcomb Anderson McCormick, Inc. used IESVE to perform a whole building energy simulation of this 9,685 ft2 building for LEED Energy compliance. The team were contracted to promote energy efficient design and optimize building performance in terms of sustainability, cost effectiveness, and occupant health and safety.

Using IESVE, the consultants set out to determine the energy and cost savings of the proposed design, using the design documents to develop a baseline model of the building in accordance to ASHRAE 90.1 – 2007 Appendix G.

The team was surprised that its LEED Energy submission came back fully approved with no iterations required, which they had not experienced having used other software packages for previous LEED projects. This saved considerable time otherwise spent on amendments and re-submissions.

ALAMEDA CREEK WATERSHED CENTER SUNOL, CALIFORNIA

This building had many advanced design elements, such as an interior cold water “living stream” aquarium space, exterior operable window walls, and mixed use exhibit spaces, that the team found more intuitive and accurate to model using IESVE than other simulation tools. With help from IES Technical Support, IESVE was used to model the specialized Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) HVAC system with accuracy to ensure efficient sizing and operation of the proposed system. This led to a large proportion of the energy and cost savings. Annual simulations combining lighting, HVAC, aquarium loads, plug loads, and other miscellaneous equipment found a 43.65% energy savings and a 43.16% cost savings over the baseline design.

The team also supported sizing and design of a 75-kW-DC photovoltaic (PV) power system to supply solar energy to offset over 100% of the site’s annual electric energy use, making it a Zero Net Energy (ZNE) building design.
