Introduction

The Energy sector in India is undergoing unprecedented investment and growth. Theprivate sector has become an integral part of this hitherto public sector dominated industry.The Power sector has become one of the preferred destinations for investors, with severalmulti-billion dollar IPOs in 2009. Dozens of companies have announced projects worthbillions of dollars. Along with the large investments in conventional energy sources,emerging areas like alternative energy, energy efficiency, environmental management andsmart technologies needed for sustainable development have become key considerationsfor corporate management and policy makers.

To tackle these challenges and realize the growth promised by these investments, thereis need for tens of thousands of highly competent managers. However, there has notbeen a commensurate investment in developing human resources and management talentto deliver on these growth plans. Further, there is an urgent need to engage even theexisting managers from the sector with the different facets of sustainable development.

The Institute of Energy Management and Research (IEMR) is an initiative by professionals withexceptional track records in the Energy industry and human resource development, and issupported by a number of Corporate Partners. The Institute’s activities include full time postgraduate management programs, corporate training programs, consulting services andindependent research to enhance the intellectual capital and knowledge base in the sector. ThePost Graduate Programs seek to develop motivated management professionals equipped withcomprehensive domain knowledge and capable of being productive from their first day ofengagement with the corporate world.

IEMR is led by Dr. B.S.K. Naidu, one of the most accomplished leaders in capacity building in theIndian Energy sector. His successful stewardship of key national apex training institutionscontributed immensely to talent development for this growing sector. He served as the DirectorGeneral of the National Power Training Institute, Central Power Research Institute and RelianceEnergy Management Institute. IEMR has the guidance and support of a distinguished advisoryboard comprising key decision makers from the Industry and highly experienced members ofacademia. The board is led by Mr. R.V. Shahi, former Power Secretary, Government of India. Hewas a key architect of the power sector reforms in India and brings rich perspectives from hisroles in the corporate world and in policy-making.

Dr. B.S.K. Naidu, Chairman, IEMR

Dr. Naidu served as the Director General of the National Power Training Institute (NPTI), Central PowerResearch Institute (CPRI) and Reliance Energy Management Institute (REMI). His Leadership at NPTIhas been made the subject of a case study on “Transformational Leadership” for MBA students andhe himself has been one of the models of study on Human Excellence at IIM, Ahmedabad. Dr. Naiduwas a key architect of the National Perspective Plan for R&D and the National Training Policy for PowerSector. He has a double Doctorate in Engineering and Management, is a Fellow of Indian NationalAcademy of Engineering and has authored over 140 publications including 15 books. He has won 13individual awards (national and international) besides representing India at many International forumsincluding a lead speech at the UN General Assembly.

Anupam SircarMA, Duke University, USA, PGDBM, IIM Bangalore,BE (Mech.) Calcutta UniversityMr. Anupam Sircar started his career in the energy sectorwith NTPC, the largest generation utility in India. He hasbeen involved in training and development, capacity andinstitution building since his early career days. He hasworked on energy cooperation in South Asia aimed atbuilding local capacity in reforming the energy sector inthis region. He has extensive experience working withBangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and Sri Lanka on regionalenergy trade and independent regulation. He also hasdiverse experience working as a Management Consultantpreparing strategic business plans, road maps,organizational policies and techno-commercial reports forinfrastructure projects in India.

S. K. PalhanMBA, FMS Delhi, B.Tech, IIT KharagpurMr. Palhan has over 12 years of teaching experience inOperations, Supply Chain, Project Management andBusiness Ethics at leading business schools in Delhi. Hehas authored a book on Project Management. Mr. Palhancurrently serves as an advisor to Ministry of Defence, hasserved as an advisor to Ministry of Industries and alsoworked at Larsen and Toubro. He is the President of Samvedna, acomprehensive HR solution provider where he advisesorganizations on their human capital development needs.Dr. Sharma has authored two books, has over 50publications and has advised multiple Ph.D candidatesfor their doctoral dissertations.

Dr. Bijoy KumarPh.D, Finance, Delhi University, MA (Economics), PGDFMDr. Kumar has 12 years of teaching experience, eight ofwhich are at Delhi University’s Department of FinancialStudies. He is an expert on finance and economics andadvises several multinational organizations on forextrading and hedging strategies.

Mohan MenonMBA, FMS, Delhi, B.E.(Electrical), NIT, BhopalMr. Menon has over 25 years experience in the Indianpower sector with expertise in a range of areas includingcontracting, market dynamics and trading. He has servedon the board of many energy companies, including aPowergrid joint-venture, as a senior vice-president atPower Trading Corporation, India’s leading power tradingcompany and for over a decade at NTPC where he wasinvolved with planning, project management andexecution of several large generation projects.

Mohan LakhamrajuMBA, Stanford University, MS, University of California,Berkeley, B.Tech, IIT MumbaiMr. Mohan Lakhamraju has over 10 years of experienceas an entrepreneur and private equity investor. He hasbeen an active investor in the education sector for thepast five years. He will focus on the areas ofEntrepreneurship, Strategy and Finance.

Rajiv MalhotraPGDBM, IIM LucknowMr. Malhotra has over 20 years of experience in keymanagement roles in the power sector in India. He playeda key role in the development of energy trading in Indiaas one of the first five employees of Power TradingCorporation. He has been involved in numerous trainingprograms and holds a keen interest in educating youngtalent.

Gautam LakhamrajuPGDBM, MDI, Gurgaon, B.Tech, DA-IICT, GandhinagarMr. Lakhamraju was a management consultant in theenergy sector with a focus on market assessment andstrategy, financial analysis and project appraisal. He hasworked extensively in renewable energy including wind,solar and small hydro. His current areas of interest includesmart grid technologies and environmental sustainability.

Admission ProcessIEMR follows a rolling admission process wherebyapplicants can submit their Application Forms at

be scrutinized by the Admissions Committee on acontinuous basis and shortlisted applicants willbe called for Personality Assessment in the city ofchoice indicated by them in the application formwithin two weeks of receiving the application. Thefinal result will be intimated to the applicant withina week of the Personality Assessment.

EligibilityCandidates with a Bachelor's degree or equivalentwith minimum 50% marks in any discipline from arecognized university are eligible for admission.Final year candidates may also apply, under thecondition that they provide documented evidenceof having fulfilled the eligibility criteria by October1, 2010.

ApplicationsThe Application Form may be downloaded from thewebsite. It must be completed and submitted,personally or by registered post along with anapplication fee of Rs. 500. The fee is payable bycash at the IEMR office or by a demand draft drawnon "Institute of Energy Management andResearch", payable at New Delhi. The completedapplication form along with the demand draft maybe sent by registered post. In case of payment bycash, the completed application form and the feemay be submitted at the IEMR admissions office.The address for submission of forms is:

Aptitude Test Scores

(MAT) or Xavier Admission Test (XAT) taken any

Management Aptitude Test (GMAT) taken any timeafter May 2007. Candidates will be required toattach a copy of their scores in the ApplicationForm and furnish original and duplicate copies

later in the selection process. Candidates takingMAT in May 2010 may submit their ApplicationForm without the score for initial scrutiny but willhave to submit their scores as soon as it isavailable with them and before the PersonalityAssessment. Neither the IIMs nor any affiliatedorganizations have any role in selections for IEMR.

Applicants who have not appeared in any of theabove tests would be required to take the IEMRManagement Aptitude Test at the Institutepremises.

Personality AssessmentThe Personality Assessment includes an evaluationof the applicant's communication skills followed bya personal interview. IEMR will conduct PersonalityAssessment at 6 locations in India (Hyderabad,Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi, and Kolkata).

Offer of AdmissionThe final selection will be based on a weightedscore of the applicant's test score, educationalbackground, professional experience andpersonality assessment. The final result will beintimated to the applicant within a week of thePersonality Assessment. Applicants who receivean Offer of Admission will be required to deposit afee of Rs. 50,000 within 2 weeks from the date ofOffer of Admission. This will be adjusted againstthe First Semester Program Fees.

Loans and SponsorshipsIEMR students can avail of loans from multiplelenders.. In addition, there are over 20sponsorships already offered by IEMR's CorporatePartners to deserving candidates including full andpartial program fee waivers. Eligibility criteria andsponsorship details will be informed to candidatesupon their admission to IEMR.
