    Salmon are born in resh waterand are called Fry. We stay in thestreams and eat lots o insects so

    we can grow and gain strength.

    A salmon ready tojourney to the oceanis called a smolt.A salmons colorchanges at thistime to a blue-ishgreen color orbetter camouagein the ocean.

    Salmon swimup fsh ladders,man-made areasthat help usclimb to thewaterways thatlead tothe ocean.

    We have one morestop beore the ocean,the estuary. Anestuary is where theriver meets the sea.

    We go through aprocess calledsmoltifcation.Now were ready to go!

    Salmon swim hundreds and thousands omiles to get to the ocean. Well live in the

    ocean until we mature, up to seven

    years or more or some salmon.

    fsh which will help us grow and thrive.

    Salmon have a keen sense o smell tohelp guide us back to our birthplace. Some

    scientists say its the earths magneticfelds that act like a compass and

    direct salmon home as well.16

    Come along, we have to swim up stream now.Salmon have to take many rests alongthe way to conserve energy. Sometimes

    we wait or the water to rise whichhelps us get home.

    years. thats why it is important or every-one to take care o the environment

    and waterways. Salmon depend on cleanwaters and deep streams and rivers to

    continue producing.22

    Quick facts about salmon:

    There are many types of salmon.Here are a few familiar ones to know.

    Know Before You Go Intothe Great Outdoors.

    Anadramous:Fish that are born in fresh water but live

    their life in the sea. Like salmon!

    Redd:A nest where the female salmon

    digs to lay her eggs.

    Alevin:The beginning stage or larval stage

    of a salmon. They are about one inch inlength and live in a yolk sac which gives

    them all their food to grow.

    Smolt:The young life-stage of a salmon. This iswhen the salmon go off to the sea to live.

    Osmoregulation:This is the time when a salmons gills

    and kidneys physically change so it cantravel from fresh water to salt water andback again. There are many types of salm-on. Here are a few familiar ones to know.
