THIS PAGETe brothers o layer hensare macerated (ground up

    alive) or suffocated hoursafer hatching.

Excess turkey and broilerchicksare killed at the hatcherybeore they even make it to thegrow out acility.

Te runt piglets o eachnew litter are killed. PAC(Pounding Against Concrete)is a common practice thatinvolves workers holding the

piglets by their hind legs andsmashing their heads against

    the floor.

FACING PAGEMale babies and surplusemales born on dairy farmsare either killed shortly aferbirth, or sold to slaughterhousesto be processed as bob veal,or auctioned to veal producersto be slaughtered 6 months later.

Every new production cycle begins with discarding theunprofitable individuals.

From actory arms, to ree-range and organic arms, to

amily arms and backyard operations, the same rule o

profit applies: as soon as an animal is deemed unprofitable,

he or she is killed. Tis sorting process begins with each new

batch o newborns, and continues throughout the short lie

o each new flock or herd.

Egg production begins with the mass killing o roosters

(male chicks). Because they cant lay eggs, roosters are

useless to the egg producer and are killed shortly afer

hatching. Every year, 200 million male chicks are killed in

American hatcheries by suffocation or maceration (being

ground up alive). Virtually all hens used in all orms o egg

production, rom ree range, to large scale, to backyard

arms, come rom hatcheries that kill all o the male chicks.

Farmers who hatch their own chicks kill the roosters on the arm.

Whether raised on small, amily arms or actory arms, domesticated animals are routinely mutilated without

anesthetics. urkeys and egg laying henshave their sensi-

tive beaks amputated with a hot machine blade that cuts

through bone, cartilage and sof tissue, causing acute pain

and ofen death, and leaving the disfigured survivors with

lielong pain resembling human phantom limb pain.urkeys also have their toes chopped off.

Cattlehave their horns cut off and their testicles cut out o

their scrotums, and many are branded with sizzling-hot

    irons, resulting in third-degree burns.

Pigs commonly have their teeth cut to the gum line, their

tails chopped off, and their ears notched, and some have

rings orced into their sensitive noses in order to perma-

nently prevent them rom rooting in the grass and dirt.

have their sensitivebeaks seared off witha hot blade.

Newly hatched turkeyshave their beaks andtoes amputated.

Calves are dehorned, many are branded withhot irons, and the malesare castrated.

As a result o selective breeding, armed animals live theirlives trapped in genetically tampered bodies whose planned

malunctioning is designed to increase the producers

prots while causing untold physical and psychological pain

to the animals whose hearts ail and whose bones break

under the morbid weight they are designed to gain at an

abnormally ast rate, and whose systems are ravaged by theorced overproduction o babies, eggs or milk.

Isolated rom the natural world to which they belonged or

millennia, armed animals are orced to live their short lives

in severely degraded physical and psychological environ-

ments that are ar different rom the ecosystems and

cultures rom which they historically derive.

Severed rom the intricate social structures that governedand guided their ree-living communities and conned,

    Whether raised on

    amily arms or

    actory arms,

    domesticated animals

    are orced to remain

    orever vulnerable and

    dependent on the very

    people who exploit and

    kill them. Legally

    regarded as property,

    they are denied not

    only the most basic

    reedom to ever

    become sel-governing

    individuals, but the

    most undamental

    right to exist.

over and over again. Some wilt in silent grie. Teir daugh-

ters are raised in isolation to replace their own mothers in

the line o production. Some o their sons are killed imme-

diately. Many others are butchered as veal, 4-6 motherless

months later. When these rail orphans are dragged onto the

killing floor, they are still looking or their mothers, still

desperately needing her nurturing presence, especially at

that dark time when they are terrified and needing protec-

tion more than ever, in the midst o the terrible sights, and

sounds, and smells o death all around them, and, in their

despair, in their want or a shred o consolation and protec-

tion, many try to suckle the fingers o their killers.

When their egg productiondeclines, egg laying hens areconsidered spent and arediscarded by the cheapestmeans possible only to bereplaced with a new set o

younger, more productivevictims whose brothers havebeen killed at one day old.

    FACING PAGEWhen their exhausted

bodies become unableto produce milk at a

profitable rate, thestill lactating mothercows and goats used

    Many are pregnant.

When their ertilitydeclines, the young motherbirds, pigs, cows, sheep and

goats whose babies wereslaughtered for meat

    are themselves killed.

All arms, large-scale and small-scale, discard the emalesused or breeding, eggs, and milk when their exhausted

bodies can no longer produce enough eggs, milk or babies

    to be profitable.

Hens used for egg production are killed when their egg

laying rate declines, typically within two years. Ofen thebodies o spent hens are so ravaged that no one will buy

them and they are disposed o by the cheapest means

possiblethey are gassed, ground into ertilizer, decapitated

in their own backyards, or just sent to a landfill.

Teir parents, the captive birds who produce the ertilized

eggs required by hatcheries, are orced to mate, or are

artificially inseminated, over and over, until their bodies are

too damaged to be profitable and they are trucked to ahorriying slaughter.

Te cows and goatssubjected to the endless cycle o rape,

pregnancy, birth and bereavement known as milk produc-

tion, are shipped to slaughter as soon as their milk output

drops below the profitable mark and their exhausted bodies

are considered spent. Most o these young mothers are

barely entering adulthood. All are still lactating.

    Many are pregnant.
