Human Resources contributes to the achievement of the University business objectives through the provision of dedicated proactive HR support and expert advice service. We support staff and managers with any employment issues they may have. Each Faculty and Professional Service area has a dedicated HR team consisting of an HR Client Partner and an HR Adviser.

HR Client Partners provide staff with procedural advice on University policies and processes, developing new policies when required to comply with legislation.

HR Advisers are here to provide dedicated administration support to their designated client areas and are the first point of contact for employees seeking advice on policies, terms and conditions of employment.

The HR Systems team support, develop and manage the systems which are used throughout an Edinburgh Napier employee’s journey. These are automated Staffing Authorisation, online Vacancy Management and HR Connect (which connects people with their information as well as connecting line managers to their people).

The team also supports other University process changes such as workplace pensions’ reform, tax reporting changes, development of the data warehouse and replacement of the current learning intranet page. The HR Systems team offer user support and training for staff and managers.

HR Connect is the primary system and is the starting point for all people information and processes including: Employee Self Service (where staff can update their personal details, view job information, book annual leave and learning events) and Line Managers Self Service (where line managers can view key staff information and reports). HR Connect is the ‘golden copy’ for all employee data and feeds into other University systems. Development of the system continues and will include E-pay slips, sickness recording, PDR and development plans for new starts.

The Payroll team provide an accurate payroll and pension administration service, in a professional, timely and helpful manner. We run two monthly payrolls, for 1800 staff and 210 pensioners. This involves ensuring all payment details are correct for all new starters, leavers and those with permanent or temporary pay changes. We liaise with the tax office and other third parties such as the childcare voucher provider, credit unions and give-as-you-earn schemes.

We administer two pension schemes, namely, Lothian Pension Fund (for professional service and research staff and managers) and Scottish Teachers Superannuation scheme (for academic staff and managers). Payroll notifies the schemes of employee changes and complete all necessary returns.

Both schemes have seen significant changes in the last two years. Workplace pension law is changing and the University has to fulfil new legal duties which take effect from July 2013. This will see all ‘eligible job holders’ automatically being entered into a workplace pension.

The team provides clear, accurate information to staff, line managers, budget holders, pension schemes, HMRC, third parties and pensioners.

academic professional development

Academic Professional Development aims to promote innovation in academic provision, to underpin researcher development and to facilitate the enhancement of academic practice through the academic professional development programme, academic induction and staff conferences. The team also showcases, celebrates and enables the sharing of good practice across the University, champions technology-enhanced learning and offers tailored development to meet the particular needs and priorities of faculties, schools and teams and staff in specific academic and research roles. Academic Professional Development is engaged in a number of developmental and research projects and is currently leading PL@N: the Programme Leadership at Edinburgh Napier University project.

Corporate Learning & Development provides development, support and advice to all staff. The Investors in People continuous improvement framework and University strategies underpin our work to ensure we continue to build staff engagement and enhance individual and organisational performance. The development we offer includes: leadership and management development, business administration skills development, essential training for all staff and personal and professional development.

We collaborate with other higher education providers through the Edinburgh Development Connections (EDC) partnership and the accredited Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) Awards

enabling us to offer a broader range of development options and giving you the opportunity to meet colleagues from other institutions and to share ideas and good practice.

We offer a wide variety of options to support organisational, team and individual development linked to the University’s needs and aspirations. These include bespoke sessions for team development for specific staff groups and, for all staff, the EDC programme and individual support including development planning, coaching and mentoring. We pride ourselves on our flexible and collaborative approach and good working relationships and always welcome enquiries regarding the service we provide.

Health & Safety

Health & Safety provide competent guidance, information, training and advice on all aspects of health, safety and welfare as it affects the University staff, students, visitors and contractors in order to ensure that standards of health, safety and welfare within the University comply with the requirements of all relevant legislation, codes of practice, guidance notes, etc and the University Health & Safety Policy and Procedures. Health & Safety provide a service to all Faculties, Schools, Services, Research Institutes, staff, students, visitors and contractors and cover all campuses and residential accommodation.

The team draft, develop, implement and review University health, safety and fire policies and procedures in accordance with relevant legislation. We monitor the implementation and management of all health, safety and fire policies and procedures throughout the University and provide a wide range of health, safety and fire training for staff and students.
