City Council Special MeetingCandidate Orchel Krier Questions Council on Thompson $3,400 Lawsuit Settlement Against CityBy Kent Miller

The Tuesday evening special session of the Taft City Council had only one item on the agenda for the public portion of the meeting. But it was what was not on the agenda that stirred up the pro-ceeding at the brief public meeting that preceded a much longer closed session for the council. The meeting started with the usual opportunity for public com-ments. Only one person had signed-up to comment, Taft resident and council candidate Orchel Krier. Krier questioned why the city defaulted on a lawsuit filed by Councilmember Cliff Thompson, who claimed that Taft City Clerk Louise Hudgens was too slow in responding to his request for public records. Hudgens said that she supplied all documents that Thompson requested and did so in a timely manner. But the city or a represen-tative didn’t appear in court and Thompson, who is one of three councilmembers seeking reelection in November was awarded $3,500 in attorney fees. “People are asking me ‘what happened,’” Krier said. “Why didn’t the city fight it? Why didn’t the city attorney go to court to fight it? “It is $3,500 of taxpayers’ money. Something is missing. I want an answer. I want to find out ...what’s happening with our money.” City Attorney Kathy Gibson said that she would prepare an an-swer for the public to be presented at Tuesday’s regularly-scheduled council meeting. Councilmembers started to discuss the matter but Mayor Dave Noerr brought an end to the discussion. “We will respond when the city attorney responds at the next city council meeting,” Noerr said. The council then turned to its only public session agenda item, approval of the submission of the 2010 HOME application, seeking $800,000 through the California Department of Housing and Community Development’s Notice of Funding Availability for Housing Programs. The submission was approved 4-to-0, with Councilmember Randy Miller absent. Of the $800,000 sought, $729,300 would be for continuance of the First Time Home Buyer Program; $50,700 would go to activity delivery; and $20,000 would be for general administration. The council then went into closed session to: * Give instruction to negotiator Noerr on bargaining with unrep-resented (non-union) city employees; * Consult with the city attorney regarding existing litigation between the Sierra Club and the City of Taft and the Taft City Council. A third item, a performance evaluation of City Manager Bob Gorson, was tabled until all five councilmembers were present.Councilmembers declined to comment on what transpired at the closed session. When the council came out of closed session, Mayor Noerr an-nounced that the council: * Voted 4 to 0 (Miller absent) to eliminate the position of As-sistant to the City Manager, * Voted to Defend the City in a lawsuit against the Sierra Club which is pursuing a complain againts the city’s General Plan, * File a cross complaint lawsuit against PMC, the city consultants on the General Plan.

Well, thanks to the Driller newspaper, Michael Long just got more name recognition in his bid for election to the Taft College Board. Michael Long, publisher of the Taft Independent, is running for a second time for election to the local community college district board of direc-tors. The Driller article, which appeared in the Tuesday issue of the paper, said that folks might be confused about which Michael Long was running. Michael Long, a volunteer at Laborers of the Harvest, and a life-long resident of Taft said he is not running for the office. The Driller noted that the other Michael Long, is a “relatively new resident of Taft” having lived here or only 5 years. “I think there are 3 or 4 Michael Long’s that live in Taft,” Long said. “I hope they all vote for me,” he said optimistically.

A Long Shot?

Michael Long (left) and Michael Long (right) are not confused about which Michael Long is running for Taft College Board.

This Center Street merchant who has recently expanded her business to occupy the building next door started doing business in Taft over 32 years ago. Vickie Gregory, owner of Personal Style Family Boutique and Salon, has had a vision for Taft, that has lead her all around town. Vickie Gregory started her first beauty shop on 5th Street called Magic Touch. She was at this location for about 6 or 7 years before she moved Magic Touch up to the Junction Shop-ping Center. Magic Touch was not in the location that you are familiar with today, Magic Touch was located in the building where Chicken of Oz currently is located. Vickie had Magic Touch in the Junction Shopping Center for 15 years before she sold it. During that time she expanded Magic Touch into the building next door, which is currently known as Dr. Sparks Chiropractic office. After Vickie sold Magic Touch she continued to work there for about a year while she planned out her next move. “I knew I had a certain amount to start over again with and if it was meant to be then it would happen,” said Vickie. “I just prayed and prayed about it.” Vickie heard about a building that was available and it was under her estimated budget. Vickie opened Personal Style in “I cant remember, 1984, 1985, 1987, something like that,” said Vickie, in the shopping center across the street from the Pilot Plaza Shopping Center. Vickie began to out grow her current location and then moved Personal Style up to the Country Corner Shopping Center, where Country Corner Florist cur-rently is. Here, she had to open up another wall to have even more room for her always expanding business. After spending a few years in that location, Vickie and Personal Style out grew that location and moved to Cen-ter Street on October 13th, 2005, right before Oildorado. “I can’t believe I’ve been here for 5 years,” said Vickie. “This building is the perfect location and has been my dream building, I always wanted it and knew it had so much potential.” Now, with a little over a month away from Oildorado, Vickie has expanded Personal Style again to the building next door to her. Personal Style now takes up 423 and 421 Center Street.

“This is the third wall I’ve had to open up,” said Vickie. “It’s a joke, I’ve been on every corner in Taft and I’ve done my part to help clean up Taft, I’ve cleaned up a lot of build-ings.” Vickie owes the success of her 32 years in business in Taft to her wonderful patrons and catering to the needs of her customers. “I love Taft. Taft has always been good to me. I have wonderful patrons and I owe what I have to them,” said Vickie. With the recent expansion of Personal Style, Vickie will be able to cater to a larger market here in Taft and have something to offer to the entire family. The new space has allowed Vickie to create a kid’s room, a teen/tween section, a junior’s room, a men’s corner, and clear-ance room along with her current boutique and salon. “I don’t know if I will ever fulfill my vision for Taft, I never stop thinking of new ideas,” said Vickie, “ Too bad I’m not a millionaire, I’d have a whole block on Center Street, there is just so much I want to bring to Taft.” For Vickie, all the hard work she has put in has paid off. “I work because I want to and I love what I do, I fully enjoy doing hair, the retail business, the shopping, I like it all, I’m sick,” she said. “I will be doing this til I can’t stand up.”

It’s About Taft

Hi Everyone,

Went to the movies at the Fox Theater in Taft this past Monday to see the action adventure flick “The Expendables”. You do remember the Fox Theater on Center Street don’t you ?? It’s located between 5th and 6th Street right in the middle of the block on the north side of the street. The ‘Fox’ is about smack dab in the middle of Taft, easy walking and driving distance for most of us. Plenty of parking available, fair ticket prices especially for seniors like me, three clean art deco movie theaters available with comfortable seats and great sound systems. Why am I going on and on about this; there were only six (6) people in the theater we were in to watch a first run movie. I wonder how many of you drove all the way to B-town to watch the same movie this past weekend ?? Think of the expense involved especially $3.00 a gallon gas to do that 60 mile round trip. Was the experience that much more en-joyable ?? Does your supporting the B-town economy help the community you live in ?? As you might be wondering, how does the ‘Fox’ stay open ?? My guess is the shear enjoyment and the love the owner has for the building to see it vibrant and the marquee glowing in the night. But we ask, how long can the owner continue to subsidize this venture when he is receiving little support from the community ?? What new owner would want to take on the debt of buying and operating the theater when past attendance records show that the community does not support the ‘Fox’ ?? Is it really the economy or have you gotten out of the habit of going to the movies in Taft; or you had a bad experience and didn’t say anything but didn’t go back; or they charged too much for candy; or the popcorn didn’t taste right or; or; or what ?? Just remember back a few years ago when we had a hospital and the reason it closed; lack of support; lack of use; supposedly getting better care somewhere else; they didn’t see me fast enough; that’s not how they did it on the doctor shows on TV. “You don’t use it, you lose it”. If the “Fox” closes its doors, the only persons you can blame are yourselves because you didn’t care. Why don’t you try it out some time like twice a month. More business will grow around the “Fox” if they see people are coming downtown. Imagine what will Taft be like if we don’t have the ’Fox’ ??Have you been by the Oildorado Store yet ?? It is located at the corner of Main and 6th Streets in the old Pioneer Mercantile building. The variety and quality of the goods is far superior that anything we have seen at Oildorado’s in the past. There is a little something for everyone. The Sheriff ’s Posse will really be gearing up on Sept 24 all the way through Oildorado looking for men with no facial hair and damsels that can’t put their hair up in a bun. The fine is a $15 dollar smooth puss badge or Tessie Garratt badge and a ride in the Hoosegow around town for all to see. You can avoid arrest by going to the store and buying your badges early and they are cheaper. In addition, tickets will be on sale for many of the venues like the Street Party, the Bakersfield Symphony, Melodrama, Civic Luncheon, Christian Concert at TUHS, Roustabout Ball and many other events. There will be lots to do and all these events are very reasonably priced but they will go fast. A 100th Oildorado Celebration only comes around onetime, here is your chance to beat the rush the nearer we get to the big doings. Arrest warrants will be ready soon. The Oil Worker Monument is coming along nicely even as some, who were recently arrested for criminal trespass, can attest. Some skateboards were doing their best to mar the base of the monument but the eagle eye tech cameras caught them in the act. The City will prosecute as strongly as possible for anyone caught trying to ruin our heritage, our symbol of everything that is good about living on the Westside. The Aera Employees donation of a Kiosk has been installed near their donation of small wooden derrick on the pedestal near Fourth Street on the Trail. The pumping unit on the large chunk of concrete in the middle of the Trail has been installed and finished up. The trees and grass seem to be thriving and the City is looking to complete the Rails to Trails down to the Museum. Once it is all finished, it will be a walking park with a little bit of history thrown in; who wouldn’t be proud of this accomplishment ?? Your vigilance will secure it for generations to come. There is a movement underway to have a” Liberty Tree” in Taft as they had back in Boston in 1765. I’m looking for some suggestions for a tree and a location. We can plant a tree or use one that has already been planted. I’d be interested in hearing your ideas. Liberty, freedom, right of assembly, freedom of speech, patriotism, and all the good things this country stands for will be represented by this tree. More info to come.A couple of ditties to ponder: One thing I’ve learned is that I still have a lot more to learn. Common sense isn’t so common.

See you around town,[email protected]

Aries (March 21-April 19): Changes in plans happen all the time, but it seems to happen more often than not with a loved one. The only way they’ll get the hint is if you stop making plans.

Taurus (April 20-May 20): While you may not think this is a big deal, you should respect the fact that to others it is extremely important. By blowing it off you’re blowing them off.

Gemini (May 21-June 20): It’s a good thing you have such a strong work ethic, because you’ll need it this week more than ever. There’s rest and relaxation on the other side though.

Cancer ( June 21-July 22): You’ve already done more than your share where a family member is concerned, so don’t worry too much if you have to bow out of plans this one time.

Leo ( July 23-August 22): If you consistently expect the worst out of people, you’ll often be right; but the same is true if you consis-tently expect the best. The choice is yours.

Virgo (August 23-September 22): You’re perfectly within your rights to feel the way you do, but you don’t need to broadcast it to anyone who will listen. Believe me, it’s unnecessary.

Libra (September 23-October 22): You’re holding onto a grudge that isn’t yours to hold. If a close friend has gotten over things, then you should too.

Scorpio (October 23-November 22): Don’t be afraid to tell a family member or two that they’ve let you down. They can’t know they’ve hurt you if you don’t tell them so.

Sagittarius (November 23-December 21): Try to turn off the snark this week and just be there to listen to a friend. They need a non-judgmental ear and it’s up to you to give them one.

Capricorn (December 22-January 19): You’ll need to be as frugal as Tiny Tim this week, but you won’t be sorry when the funds you saved can be put to important use this month.

Aquarius ( January 20-February 19): Do what you must to have your opinion heard at work this week. If you don’t speak up now, it will very soon be too late for a glorious opportunity.

Pisces (February 20-March 20): Your temper’s been getting the better of you lately, so try to get the upper hand on it this week. As long as it’s in control, you’re not.

If your birthday is this week: Every once in awhile, it’s okay (neces-sary even) to forget about what you need and focus on what you want. Never has a week been riper for this than now. Don’t stop to think; don’t choose what’s sensible. Just go for what you want and live in the moment. The sense of liberation you feel will be worth any cost.

Burglars Downstairs, Where Is My Gun?By Dr. Harold Pease

In light of the double murder in a prominent California city where two 16-year-old thugs with baseball bat and knife blud-geoned an elderly couple to death after first robbing them in the hopes of acquiring more money for their frequent marijuana habits, I wonder if this tragedy may have been avoided had the victims used a gun to protect themselves. Many crime victims are also victims to our society’s undying trust that if we are law-abiding others around us will be also, and those who are not will be dealt with swiftly by law enforcement. Such is naive, impossible, and a great American myth. The above is played out frequently in every major city in America. Those who have and use a gun on an intruder survive and are, in fact, praised by law enforcement. Bad guys perish, leave with a wound, are frightened away and rarely return, or are held until police finally arrive. Last year a ninety-seven year old potential victim held her intruder at bay for several minutes until police could arrive. Even with faith in the police it remains impossible for them to be on a crime scene until notified of one and even then it will take several minutes for them to actually arrive. In the meantime you are dead. This is why most crazy gunman in shopping centers or McDonald are initially taken out by off duty police officers or con-cealed weapons permit holders instead of on-duty police officers. Schools are different. No one has a gun so the killing continues until law enforcement arrives. This is why you must preserve your right of self-defense and why the recent Supreme Court decision, McDonald v. City of Chicago, is so important to you. Some cities like New York, Washington D.C. and Chicago are more naive than others and have actually prohibited their residents from having handguns in their homes for self-defense, thus making their citizens hostage to the thugs and murders around them. That ended June 28,2010 when the Supreme Court ruled in McDonald v. Chicago that “the Right to keep and Bear Arms, guaranteed by the Second Amendment, extends to every city and state in America (“Victory in Chicago,” America’s 1st Freedom, Sept. 2010, pp. 32-36).” Several philosophical assumptions prevailed in this decision. Self-defense has always been seen as a basic human right of pres-ervation --more especially in England and America--“long before our country existed.” Due Process, which emanated from the 14th Amendment, gives preference to that which is fundamental and deeply rooted in history and tradition which self-defense clearly is. Moreover, the “right to keep and bear arms was also clearly

recognized when the 14th Amendment was adopted” and one of the purposes of adoption was to “protect the freedmen after the Civil War. Descendents of ex-slaves should be overwhelmingly in support of their right to defend themselves. Finally, the 14th Amendment made the Bill of Rights applicable in all the states whereas before it was a prohibition of the Federal Government denying such basic rights, now it was a prohibition to the states from doing so as well. Dissenting Justices were Stephen Breyer, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, John Paul Stevens, and Sonia Sotomayor, recently appointed to the Court, arguing that The Second Amendment was not a fundamen-tal right. Some justices unconstitutionally attempted to bring to bear international law in their deliberation to which Justice Scalia brilliantly answered, “I care not a whit what passes as ‘civilized’ in England or New Zealand; let their citizens seek their own path toward freedom. In America, we have the Constitution.” I agree.Perhaps dissenting justices would be more sympathetic to the right of self-defense if they had a burglar downstairs in their homes. Dr. Harold Pease is an expert on the United States Constitution. He has dedicated his career to studying the writings of the Found-ing Fathers and applying that knowledge to current events. He has taught history and political science from this perspective for over 25 years at Taft College. To read more of his articles, please visit www.LibertyUnderFire.org.

Back to School Back Pack Drive

Last week’s back to school back packs & school supplies event was a happy success and eagerly received by some very excited students, thank to Maricopa Chamber of Commerce Platinum sponsor Nestle Purina. Nestle Purina’s sponsorship of the program made this years’ event a huge success, Students pictured are from left to right: Cristal Casillas--Katelynn Clark---Oden Carty--Camden Scalera , We wish you a successful school year ahead.

The Maricopa Chamber of Commerce recently received a plaque and certificate of appreciation for their continued yearly support at the annual Stand down for Homeless Veterans of Kern County. The award was presented by Mike Pen-ny from the Bakersfield Veterans service office. A special thank you to all that donated towards this worthy cause. The Maricopa Chamber col-lects new and gently used clothing throughout the year to be distributed during the event. The Chamber also prepared and served hot meals for all the support personal and Homeless Veterans attending, normally numbering around 400. We want to share this award as it belongs to all those whose donations help make this possible. Special thanks to the Taft Sportsman’s Club and the Taft Prospector’s Club for their yearly support to the event. This year’s event begins on October 9th. Any clean and gently used or new clothing can be dropped off at 415 Mary street in Maricopa. No trash please and no socks or underwear un-less new, for more info call the numbers below.
