2010 BOARD OF TRUSTEESThe Board meets at 4.00pm on the second and eighth week of each term. The meeting is public and parents are invited to attend. Please contact the office if you would like to contact a Board of Trustees member.

CURRICULUMHay Park School aims to develop students who love to learn, and our emphasis is achievement. We have excellent support programmes for students who are new to speaking English, who need reading and writing support and for the Talented and Gifted. As well as English, Science, Social Sciences, Mathematics and Statistics, The Arts, Technology, Physical Education and Health and Learning Languages. There are many opportunities for students to experience Cultural and Sporting activities.

SPECIAL NEEDS AND ABILITIESThe school encourages children to take part in the Australian Maths assessment. Pupils may be selected to be part of the ‘Challenging Minds’ Programme. Some students attend the Gifted Kids Programme located at Waikowhai Intermediate School. Students who are learning English are supported in the Learning Support Programme. A Parent Tutor Reading Programme called All Stars runs each day from 2.00-3.00pm. The Gold Team runs each Wednesday and is a reading support programme run by the ASB.

BEHAVIOURAt Hay Park School students are expected to be well behaved, so that they are able to learn in a safe environment. If you have concerns please talk to the class teacher or make an appointment to see the Principal. If at any time you hear about bullying please contact the school.

HOMEWORK It is school policy to set regular homework for all classes which varies with the age of the child. The focus in Years 0 – 2 is daily reading and learning words , while Years 3 – 6 includes numeracy and literacy.

LIBRARYHay Park School has a wonderful library which is used by all classes each week. Children are able to borrow books but they to

have returned their books from the previous week.

CULTURAL We have a wonderful school choir and children are encouraged to join. We also have cultural groups and opportunities to perform with dance and drama. . If you are able to help us

please contact your child’s teacher.

SPORTChildren participate in a range of competitive and non-competitive sports. The following is a list of sports played at school: Cricket, Cross-country, Softball, Rugby, Athletics and Soccer.

PRE-SCHOOL VISITSParents and Caregivers are encouraged to bring their pre-schoolers for school visits before they turn five. Visiting day is a Friday between 9.00am and 10.10am; however if this is not convenient, we will talk with you to find a suitable time. Please contact the school office to book a pre- school visit.

EARLY ENTRY MEETINGEach term we hold a meeting for new parents to our school. At this meeting teachers will explain how parents can help their children learn. This is also an opportunity for parents to ask questions and meet other parents.

HOME-SCHOOL PARTNERSHIPThe Home-School Partnership meets once a term to work with families on how to help children learn. Topics that have been covered recently include - ‘How to help your child with

Numeracy’ and ‘How to help your child with Reading’.

COMMUNICATION WITH PARENTSNewslettersThese are sent home each fortnight on a Monday, starting the

first week in term, then every alternate week from then on. Meet-the-Teachers Open Evening.In February an open evening is held for parents to visit the

school and meet the teachers informally.

Written ReportsA report is sent home during Term 2 which is discussed at the

mid-year parent-teacher-child conference. Parents also receive a written report in December.

Parent-Child-Teacher InterviewsDuring Term 2, there are scheduled conferences between the

parent/s, child and teacher. The dates for these conferences will be in a newsletter. We encourage all parents to attend so that they are informed about their child’s learning and progress.

PortfoliosAt the end of Term 1 and Term 3 portfolios containing examples

of your child’s work will be sent home. ???

ATTENDANCEIf your child is absent from school you must phone the office on 625-9531, or text us on xxxxxxxxx before 8.50am to let the office staff know. Leave a message on the answer phone or call into the office. We will note your child’s name in the absence book. A Doctor’s Certificate is needed for children who have absences of 3 or more days. Parents wishing to withdraw their children during the school day

must sign them out in the Sign Out book at the office.

UNIFORMHay Park School has a uniform code. The uniform is available for sale from Waikowhai Intermediate, Monday and Thursday 8.15am – pm or The Uniform Centre, xxx Remuera Road, Monday – Friday, xam – xpm, ph xxx-xxxx.Students who are unable to wear correct uniform will need a written explanation from home.

STATIONERYStudents are encouraged to purchase their stationery from the school. This ensures the correct books and tools are in use.

SCHOOL DONATIONS The School donation is $60.00 per child per year or $100.00 per family. This donation is used to purchase resources to improve your children’s learning that the Ministry of Education does not provide funding for.

HEALTH SERVICES AT SCHOOLThe following health services are available at school: Dental Treatment, Public Health Nurse, Hearing and Vision Testing and Audiology. The Public Health Nurse visits our school on Thursday. She can be contacted through the school office.

ROAD PATROLSRichardson Road is an extremely busy road at all times. The crossing is patrolled by Waikowhai Intermediate School and by Hay Park School from 8.15 to 8.45am and from 3.00 to 3.10pm.

The road patrol children are trained and supervised.
