In times of limited budgets and resources, making theright choices about entrusting your corporate assets tothe care of an operating system could have manyintended or unintended consequences. Just likechoosing the right contractor for your houseremodeling, an experience that is all too familiar tomany of us.

Seriously, it is not much different when IT customersdecide which operating system to employ or to keep intheir data center or to entrust with maintaining theircorporate jewels. Unlike customer budgets, which haveto do more with less, operating systems have to domore with more. That is, more lines of code, moretasks and better performance. And while mostcommercial UNIX operating systems are between 20to 30 years old, they have to continue to improvewhile keeping up with the newest technologies.

What operating system is right for your environment?Obviously, the one that meets your needs and allowsyou to utilize your mission-critical applications whilegiving you capabilities to manage today’s andtomorrow’s IT resources. Let us consider three keys tochoosing an operating system.

Three keys to choosing anoperating systemThe most basic goal of an operating system is to serveas the mission-control point for your business criticalapplications while providing, what Hewlett-PackardCompany (HP) calls elements of the AdaptiveInfrastructure such as intelligently virtualizedenvironment, continuous availability and dynamicallyscalable infrastructure.

• Intelligently virtualized environment with theflexibility to execute initiatives faster and moreefficiently. This critical OS capability is what realestate agents refer to as “location, location, location”in choosing the right home

– Choose an OS with the richest portfolio ofpartitioning and virtualization technologies as wellas with an automated virtual infrastructure that canadapt in seconds with mission-critical reliability

•Continuously available platform engineered for theextreme uptime needs of today’s 24x7 globalenterprise

– Choose an OS that is engineered for a maximumof 3 seconds of annual downtime while providinglayered security with in-depth protection. Not as acollection of add-ons that need to be integrated butas something that has been natively integrated andprotects data in all forms, as well as systems anddigital identities

•Dynamically scalable infrastructure designed to meetthe demand of real-time business, consistently

– Choose an OS that provides superior performancefor a connected world—where every millisecondmatters and provides you with a choice of scalableplatforms as well as rich partnerships and deliverymodels to meet the unique needs of your business

While there could be other key points for selecting theright operating system, these three are absolutelycritical. With limited budgets, one should also look forthe best TCO/ROI, as well as Software and HardwareInvestment Protection offered by the OS.

HP-UX 11i v3 has beenarchitected as a customer-centric operating system. Many features and capabilities have been developedin direct response to customer requests. Customerempowerment is one of main characteristics ofHP-UX 11i v3. While many features and capabilitieshave been combined to achieve this goal, let’sconsider the ones that matter the most to enterprisecustomers:

• Intelligently virtualized environment is what providesagility to customers

– With enhanced virtualization capabilitiesarchitected into HP-UX 11i v3, Integrity servers gobeyond basic machine virtualization, to provide ahighly adaptive, mission-critical and virtualinfrastructure that makes efficient use of computeand staff resources

– With intelligent virtualization, the Integrity andHP-UX platform provides an automatedinfrastructure that speeds execution of businesstechnology initiatives

– Deploy new applications in as little as minutes’time, and create an environment with the ability todynamically flex compute resources to helpbalance workloads in real-time and ensure thequality of service your customers demand

•Continuous availability and Integrated SecurityProtection is what gives customers 100% availabilityand optimal protection from internal and externalsecurity threats

– Leveraging HP-UX 11i v3, Integrity serversare engineered to deliver mainframe-caliber

or better reliability, and power the mostdemanding applications where downtime issimply impossible—stock markets, telephoneinfrastructures, ATM networks and more

– Dramatically enhanced set of security featuresaligned with modern-day regulatory compliancerequirements (Encrypted Volume and File System,Security Containment, Role Based Access Control)

– HP-UX 11i v3 is extending HP-UX’s mainframe-classavailability by reducing the need for downtime withhot-swap memory, processors, and I/O cards andwith online patching for HP-UX software with ourDynamic Root Disk

•Dynamically scalable infrastructure is whatconsistently meets the demand of real-time globalbusiness

– In an unpredictable business environment whereapplication response times must be measured inmilliseconds, Integrity servers running HP-UX 11i v3are engineered to deliver consistent, superiorperformance to satisfy the demands of internal andexternal customers

– Save processing throughput time: Process morein less time with Integrity servers runningHP-UX 11i v3—optimized to meet the demandsfor faster turnaround and reduced processing times

– And finally, the System Management Homepagesis enhanced with more integration such as theServiceGuard Manager and Process ResourceManager for intuitive control of HP-UX systems:HP-UX 11i v3 now provides a “single pane ofglass” for managing HP-UX systems

Other Key Points:•HP-UX 11i v3 is architected to provide customers withover 100 million zettabytes of storage capacity.(Note:1 zettabyte = 1 billion TeraBytes)

•Compared to HP-UX 11i v2, the new OS,HP-UX 11i v3 provides unified management withTCO savings up to 30%, and energy efficiencies ashigh as 50%

•And simply updating from HP-UX 11i v2 toHP-UX 11i V3, can give customers a 30% betterOS performance

Investing in the future with ourcustomersHP-UX 11i v3 has been architected to be thefoundation for the future. An investment today inHP-UX 11i is a long-term investment in UNIX leadershipfor a successful future, with mission-criticalvirtualization to enable the Adaptive Infrastructure. With decades of experience, technology innovations, and global resources, HP is well positioned to extendthe leadership of HP-UX 11i for decades to come. HP iscommitted to HP-UX 11i innovation that delivers thehighest customer value for mission-critical businessrequirements.

ConclusionWe are continuing to invest in HP-UX 11i, building onthe HP Virtual Server Environment to integrate

virtualization into every corner of the enterprise. The objective is to enable a fully integrated andvirtualized enterprise—one that can both optimizeresource utilization in real time based on dynamicbusiness needs, and exceeds service-levelrequirements. With future releases of HP-UX 11i, HPwill also further extend the high-availability leadershipof HP-UX 11i, as well as its security capabilities—all asintegral parts of the operating environment to delivermaximum business value.
