Mac OS X 10.6 supportHP has worked closely with Apple to ensure that our mutual Mac OS X customers will enjoy a smoothtransition to new Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.One significant improvement in Mac OS X 10.6 is, thatthere is no need to download or reinstall any additionalHP printer software for print functionality as there isdriver support for HP peripherals built into new Mac OSX v10.6 by default install.

HP printer drivers and software packages being released after the installation of Mac OS X 10.6, willbe instantly integrated and updated on the customer’sMac via Snow Leopard's built-in Software Updatemechanism.

The latest HP software is available from 1) Apple’s Mac OS X 10.6 retail DVD2) downloadable via Apple Software Updates, and 3) included on new Macs shipping with Snow Leopard.

HP continues to offer great connectivity support over anytype of I/O including USB, Ethernet, 802.11b/g WiFi,and seamless Bonjour compatibility with the new MacOS X 10.6.

Upgrading to Mac OS X 10.6 from Mac OS X 10.4 or10.5 – Configuring your HP deviceIf you are upgrading your Mac OS using the Snow Leopard DVD, the install process should automaticallyrecreate your previous HP printer queues using the latestHP drivers included in Snow Leopard.

Note: If you are using or sharing a printer that is connected directly to an Apple Airport with a USB orEthernet cable, these printer queues will NOT be recreated. A new printer queue can be easily andquickly created using the steps below.

Configuring your HP printer on a new Macintosh withSnow Leopard already installed, or after performing aclean install from the Snow Leopard DVDFor both USB and network setup, please follow the samesteps listed below. For some HP devices, it may beimportant to make sure the Mac is connected to the Internet in order to access Apple Software Updates forthe latest HP software.

Important: Please do not reinstall software from originalHP CDs or HP web downloads from previous Mac OS X10.3, 10.4, or 10.5. Older software is not compatiblewith Snow Leopard. The latest Snow Leopard compati-ble software is included in Mac OS X 10.6, and you’llexperience the best performance and functionality if youuse the latest HP software.

Full print functionalityThe latest HP printer drivers, scan software, fax drivers(where applicable) and utility are included in Mac OS X10.6. for HP inkjet All-in-Ones.

You do not need to reinstall or download any HP soft-ware for full print, scan, fax, and utility functionality.

There are some important updates with the HP softwareincluded in Mac OS X 10.6:

Printing: Full print functionality is supported with newHP print drivers included in Snow Leopard. ‹ see page 6

Scanning: The Scanning interface is now built intoSnow Leopard and supported with Apple’s ImageCapture application. ‹ see page 7

Note 1: HP Scan Pro software (from Mac OS X 10.4,10.5) is not supported in Snow Leopard. The HP iconfor HP Device Manager still in the dock after upgradeis not functional and should be removed.

HP Utility: HP Utility is included in Snow Leopard‹ see page 8

Fax drivers: HP fax drivers are included in Snow Leopard for supported devices‹ see page 9

Printing

Method one: Printing from a USB Printer1. Make sure your printer is turned on and connected.

2. Open a document to print, choose File > PrintOr go directly to System Preferences > Print & Fax

3. From the Printer pop-up menu, choose your printer.If you do not see your printer listed, choose AddPrinter, and then click More Printers.

4. In the Name column, select your printer, click Add

Method two: Printing from a Network PrinterYou can connect to HP printers on your local network(wireless and Ethernet) using Bonjour and IP, as well asshared printers connected to an Apple Airport base station. Note: Apple does NOT support AppleTalk inMac OS X 10.6.

1. Choose File > Print.

2. From the Printer pop-up menu, choose your printer.Your printer may also be listed in the nearby Printerssubmenu. A dialog appears, listing any Bonjour printers on your local network. It may take a minute or two for your printer to appear.

3. If your printer does not appear, choose Add Printerfrom the Printer pop-up menu. Printers that are turnedon and connected to the local network (wireless andEthernet) should appear as Bonjour devices.

4. Select your device from the list and click Add to create the HP printer queue for your HP Photosmart,Officejet, or Deskjet All-in-One printer.

Important: On larger networks, outside the Bonjour link-local network, your printer may not show up in thelist. In this case, you can connect to your printer using itsIP address. An IP printer is a network printer that usesTCP/IP protocol (such as HP Jetdirect, LPD/LPR, IPP) tocommunicate with your printer. You will need to knowthe printer IP address or DNS name (available from theprinters front panel or Network Configuration Page).

1. In the toolbar, click IP.

2. From the Protocol pull-down menu, choose HP Jetdirect – Socket. This is the preferred protocol toconnect to HP printers. For best performance pleasedo not use IPP or LPD.

3. Enter your printer network information IP address orDNS name. The system should automatically select theappropriate HP print driver in the “Print Using” pulldown menu.

4. Click Add to create the HP printer queue for your HP Photosmart, Officejet, or Deskjet All-in-One printer.

Your computer can usually detect whether a printer hasspecial accessories installed, such as additional papertrays or a duplex unit. If it can, a dialog appears thatlets you specify them. To enable full functionality, makesure the settings in that dialog accurately reflect yourprinter installed options.

Scanning with the software included inMac OS X 10.6New with Snow Leopard, the Scanning interface tothese HP Inkjet All-in-One devices is now built into SnowLeopard and supported with Apple Image Capture application.

There are three ways to perform scanning from your HP All-in-One:1. Preview application2. Image Capture application3. System Preferences > Print & Fax

Important: After you open the scan interface, importantto select the correct mode (Flatbed or Document Feeder)for the source of the scan image. Your HP All-in-Onemay have an Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) or aflatbed lid. By default, Document Feeder will be the au-tomatically selected Mode for any devices that have anADF. You must select Flatbed if you want to scan directlyfrom the glass flatbed and not the Document Feeder.

Method one: Scan from the Preview Application1. ClickApple’s Preview icon in the dock to open the

Preview application.

2. From Preview File pull down menu, choose Importfrom Scanner.

3. Choose the HP Photosmart, Officejet, or Deskjet All-in-One. The scan interface opens. Click on the ShowDetails button to view settings and options.

Method two: Scan from the Image Capture Application1. In the Applications folder, select and open Image

Capture.

2. In the list of devices on the left, click your HP All-in-One. Networked devices appear in the Sharedlist. The scan interface opens. Click on the ‘Show Details’ button to view settings and options.

Method three: Scan from > Print & Fax > Printer browser

1. From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.

2. Click Print & Fax.

3. Sselect the HP All-in-One to view the options in thePrint & Fax window.

4. Click the Scan tab, and then click the Open Scannerbutton. The Printer Browser window appears.

5. Click the Scan icon at top right of the tool bar tolaunch scanning. The scan interface opens. Click onthe Show Details button to view settings and options.

HP UtilityUsing the HP Utility to manage and troubleshoot the device. The latest HP Utility is included in Mac OS X10.6.

Method one: Open the HP Utility from the System Preferences window 1. Make sure your device is turned on and connected.

2. From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.

3. Click Print & Fax preferences.

4. In the list of devices on the left side of the dialog (theHP printer queue), select your HP All-in-One.

5. Click Options and Supplies.

6. Click the Utility tab at the top of the window, andthen click Open Printer Utility. The HP Utility opens. Features and options may varydepending on your printer model.

Method two: Alternative: The HP Utility can also be launched from the printericon in the dock to open the Printer Browser window.

1. Double click on the printer icon. The Printer browser window opens

2. Click Printer Setup in toolbar

3. Click Utility tab

4. Click Open Printer Utility button The HP Utility opens. Features and options may varydepending on your printer model.

HP Fax driver included in Mac OS X 10.6Accessing, configuring, and using HP Fax drivers are included in Snow Leopard for supported HP devices.

Fax drivers allow you to send a print job directly to theHP All-in-One and the device will then fax the documentaccording to the information you entered in the Fax Recipients pull down menu in the Print dialog.

HP Fax drivers are NOT automatically added by MacOS X 10.6. HP Fax drivers from previous Mac OS X10.4 or 10.5 are not compatible with new Mac OS X10.6.

To add a Fax driver queue:1. Make sure your printer is turned on and connected.

2.Open a document to print (or fax), and then chooseFile > Print.

Note: You can also go directly to System Preferences >Print & Fax

3.From the Printer pop-up menu, choose Add Printer.In the Printer Name column, printers will be listed. Twoprinter drivers will be listed, one driver for printing andsecond driver for faxing.

4.Select the printer name ending in “Fax” and thenclick Add to create the fax driver queue.The “Kind” will be listed as “HP-Fax”.

Full print functionalityThe latest HP LaserJet printer software (v5.3) for HPLaserJet printers is included in Mac OS X 10.6 and alsoavailable via Apple Software Updates.You do not needto download or reinstall any HP software for full printingfunctionality.

To find the version number of your HP LaserJet software:Under the Apple icon menu (located in top left toolbarat Finder level) select ‘About this Mac’. Click on MoreInfo button to launch System Profiler. Select ‘Printers’from the left column inside the Hardware section. Full print functionalityThe latest HP LaserJet printer software (v5.3) for HP LaserJet printers is included in Mac OS X 10.6.You do not need to download or reinstall any HP oftware for full printing functionality.

NOTE: You can administer all networked HP LaserJetprinters by accessing the Embedded Web Server in theprinter. A few different ways to open the printers Embedded Web Server include: 1) From Safari – open the Bonjour tab under the book

icon pull down menu and select the printer.

2) From any web browser, enter printers IP address inthe browsers address bar.

HP LaserJet software is included in Apple’s Mac OS X10.6 Snow Leopard DVD and also available via AppleSoftware Updates.

Full print functionalityMac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard includes HP Designjetprinter drivers plus HP utility for the full print and utilityfunctionality. The latest HP Designjet software and printutility for the HP Designjet printers are also included inthe Mac OS X 10.6 retail DVD, Apple Software updates, and all new Macs that are delivered withSnow Leopard.

HP Designjet Printer setup instructionsThe following sections describe how to install your HP Designjet printer under the following circumstances:

1. Upgrading to Mac OS X 10.6 from Mac OS X 10.4or 10.5

2. Configuring your HP Designjet printer with a newMacintosh with Snow Leopard already installed orafter performing a clean install from the Snow LeopardDVD.

HP Designjet – ICC Profiles within Postscript modelsThe HP Designjet drivers in the Snow Leopard DVD donot include the ICC Profiles for your printers. In order toget the latest ICC Profiles please visit our Designjet Graphic Arts Portal.www.hp.com/go/designjet/support

HP Designjet – raster (non-postscript) modelsThe new drivers for these models are not included on theApple Mac OS X Snow Leopard DVD. The latest driversfor these models should be available from Apple Soft-ware Updates. It is important to have the Macintoshconnected to the internet during upgrade and installation to access Apple Software Updates.

Do not reinstall drivers from the original HP DesignjetCDs or web downloads from previous Mac OS X10.3, 10.4 or 10.5. Older software is not compatiblewith Snow Leopard. The latest Mac OS X 10.6 compatible HP print drivers are included in Mac OS X10.6 DVD, Apple Software Updates, and new Macs.You will experience the optimum performance andfunctionality if the latest HP software is used.

Upgrading to Mac OS X 10.6If you are upgrading your Mac OS X 10.6 from MacOS X 10.4 or 10.5: If you have a PostScript Designjet printer, the queue

will automatically be recreated using the latest HP drivers included in Snow Leopard. After recreatingyour queues, Apple Software may launch automati-cally and suggest that you download a new driver for your printers. In order to have the most up to datedriver for your HP Designjet printers, please install theupdate from Apple Software.

If you have a non PostScript Designjet printer, theApple Software Update application will launchallowing you to install the new driver for your printer.

Note: If you are using or sharing a printer that is connected directly.

Printing from a USB Printer1. Make sure your printer is turned on and connected.

2. Open a document or web page to print, and thenchoose File > Print. Note: You can also go directly toSystem Preferences > Print & Fax.

3. From the Printer pop-up menu, choose your printer. Ifyou do not see your printer listed, choose Add Printer,and click Default

4. In the Name column, select your printer, and thenclick Add.

HP UtilityThe latest HP Utility is included in Mac OS X 10.6. Usethe HP Utility to manage and troubleshoot the printer.HP Utility is the new application replacing HP Printer Utility for your HP Designjet printers. Please check yourusers guide to find out if your Designjet printer includesHP Utility support.1. Make sure your printer is turned on and connected.

2. From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.

3. Click Print & Fax preferences.

4. In the list of devices on the left side of the dialog (theHP printer queue), select your HP Designjet printer.

5. Click Options and Supplies.

6. Click the Utility tab at the top of the window, andthen click Open Printer Utility. The HP Utility opens. Features and options may varydepending on your printer model.

Alternative:The HP Utility can also be launched from the printericon in the dock to open the Printer Browser window.1. Double click on the printer icon. The Printer browser

window opens.

2. Click Printer Setup in toolbar

3. Click Utility tab

4. Click Open Printer Utility buttonThe HP Utility opens. Features and options may varydepending on your printer model.

NOTE: You can administer most networked HP Designjetprinters by accessing the Embedded Web Server in theprinter. A few different ways to open the printers Embed-ded Web Server include: 1) From Safari – open the Bonjour tab under the book

icon pull down menu and select the printer.

2) From any web browser, enter the printer’s IP addressin the browsers address bar. Please check your usersguide to verify if your printer includes Embedded WebServer.

Additionally, some printers can be managed by the System Maintenance Utility. The new version of theSystem Maintenance Utility supporting Snow Leopardwill be available at HP Graphic Arts Portal. Configuring your HP Designjet on a new Macintosh with Snow Leopard alreadyinstalled, or after performing a clean installfrom the Snow Leopard DVDIf you have installed the HP drivers from the Snow Leopard DVD, queues for your USB connected PostScriptprinters will automatically be created. The Apple Soft-ware Update application will launch automatically whendetecting a USB connected Raster printer.If the Apple Software Update application is not laun-ched in your system, please follow the same steps aslisted above in the Printing from a USB Printer section tocreate your queue.For network setup, please follow the same steps as listedabove in the Printing from a Network Printer section. Forsome HP devices, it may be important to make sure theMac is connected to the Internet in order to accessApple Software Updates for the latest HP software.

Do not reinstall drivers from the original HP DesignjetCDs or web downloads from previous Mac OS X10.3, 10.4, or 10.5. Older software is not compatiblewith Snow Leopard. The latest Mac OS X 10.6 compatible drivers are included in Mac OS X 10.6,and you’ll experience the best performance andfunctionality if you use the latest HP software.
