Heart attacks are the leading killer of both men and women in the United States, with more than 1 million Americans suffering heart attacks each year. A heart attack, also called Myocardial Infarction (MI), is permanent damage to the heart muscle and can be fatal. "Myo" means muscle, "cardial" refers to the heart, and "infarction" means death of tissue due to lack of blood supply. The recent death of actor James Gandolfini (51) ,who was best known for his role as Tony Soprano on HBO’s hit show The Sopranos, died suddenly of a heart attack has thrust the perils of heart disease back into the spotlight. Heath attack and Strokes are life and death emergency situations where every second counts. In many patients, symptoms are shown much earlier and if you seem to have noted it, better consult a doctor or call 911 for help, as there are lots of new drugs that save your life if given at the right time.

A heart attack usually occurs when the supply of oxygen-rich blood to the heart is suddenly blocked, usually by a blood clot. Lack of blood to the heart can seriously damage the heart muscle which becomes “starved” for oxygen, and the heart’s cells die.
