How to motivate students

Motivation is essential to successWithout motivation Ss certainly fail to make

the necessary effort

• Are all Ss motivated in the same way?

• What is the teacher’s role in a S’s motivation?

• How motivation can be sustained?

EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION

It is caused by any number of outside factor:

• need to pass an exam

• the hope of financial reward

• possibility or future travel

INTRINSIC MOTIVATION

By contrast, comes from within the individual

• the enjoyment of the learning process itself

• a desire to make themselves feel better.

Motivation can be affected and influenced by ATTITUDE of people.

The society we live in:

• Is the language learning part of the curriculum of high or low status?

• Are the cultural images associated with English positive or negative?

Significant others:

• the influence of people who are close to them.

• the attitude of parents and older sibblings will be crucial.

Be sure students are physically comfortable.

Open the door when the room is too hot

Make sure all the students can see the board and hear the tape recorder properly.


Take into account class time when students are often tired during lesson planning. e.g. something light and fun for last class periods in the morning or for Friday.

The average S has an attention span of 20-30 minutes. Therefore, vary the lesson with different techniques and strategies: pair/group work, time-limited tasks, etc.


Do not overload Ss. Give them time to prepare, think and consolidate knowledge.

Plan work and classroom activities so that Ss may take roles of varying levels of responsibility.


Take care to select materials and activities which are suitable for the student’s level. Classes are often multi-level.

Teachers need to consider stronger and weaker students and provide an easier option and /or extra materials for early finishers.

Teachers need to VARY not only the activity types (methodological strategies and procedures), but also subject matter, pace, power and the amount of movement and noise in the classroom

There can be many purposes for using BGM in language teaching.

Play it when Ss are tired, bored, or discouraged. The selection of music reflects the culture of the English speaking countries.

1. Make an effort to build a good rapport.

Activities to break the ice are very important at the beginning of the course, but it is also necessary to continue taking dynamics into consideration throughout the term and to choose activities accordingly.

Ss write sentences in which the first word begins with A, the second word begins with B, the third word begins with C, and so on.

1. Students may quickly lose motivation through feelings or failure.

2. A students who is overcorrected while speaking may be discouraged from joining in future discussions; just as students whose written work is returned covered in red ink may not hand in next homework.

3. Encourage Ss by making them aware of their strengths and progress. Give the praise when it is due.

4. Ss fear making mistakes. Let them go on. This will give them a sense of confidence.

5. Go over common mistakes after Ss finish their participation.

2. Do the needs and wants analysis to find out what the Ss’ interests, needs, and experiences are. In addition, it can be refleted on the success or failure of the activities and topics.

3. Often the easiest way to involve Ss is to take them and their own knowledge, experiences and lives the content of the lesson.

• Be approachable and supportive. While encouraging Ss to help each other, you need to create an atmosphere in which Ss are not afraid to ask and speak in English, What really care is communication.


• Some Ss can feel so nervous that might forget everything and their task performance could fail.

• Make the learning process and the environment as relaxed and pleasurable as possible.
