Greet the respondent, then give them this introduction: My name is _________. I am working with Oxfam, ____ (partner name/others). We are carrying out a survey to help us understand about work in households and the community. There is no material compensation for participating in the survey and no special support will come to your household as a result of your responses to the questions. Your participation is completely voluntary. I want to assure you that it is fine if you decide not to answer a particular question or wish to discontinue the questionnaire altogether at any point. We will be using this (show handset) to take down your answers instead of the usual paper and pen. It’s like a cell phone but it will only be used to record your answers. It does not record voice and does not take pictures. Using this helps us to conduct the interview in a shorter time with less possible mistakes. Show how the handset works if you think it will make the respondent more comfortable The records of this research will be kept private. In any publication based on this questionnaire, any information that will make it possible to identify participants will not be included. We are interested in what you think about the questions. Feel free to make any comment; there are no wrong or right answers! Do you have any questions about what I have mentioned so far? If you have any questions about the study in the future, please feel free to contact xx.

As I have described to you before, there is no material compensation for participating in the survey and your child’s participation is completely voluntary. I want to assure you that it is fine if your child decides not to answer a particular question or wishes to discontinue the questionnaire altogether at any point.
