  • Holocaust Memorial Month

    Embassy of Hungary

    Washington, DC

    April 3-26, 2012

  • In 2000, during the first government of Prime Minister Viktor

Orbán, the National Assembly of Hungary declared April 16

as the Hungarian Holocaust Memorial Day to be

commemorated in the Parliament of Hungary and all

    Hungarian secondary schools every year.

This particular date was chosen because April 16, 1944 was

the first day of the Hungarian Jewry being forced into

ghettos. Ever since 2001, this Memorial Day serves as official

Holocaust commemoration in Hungary and wherever

    Hungarians may live worldwide.

The Embassy of Hungary organizes a Holocaust Memorial

Month in Washington, DC in April 2012 to commemorate

those who perished during the Holocaust, to pay tribute to the

men and women who rescued Hungarian Jews from being

transported to Nazi concentration camps to their certain

deaths, and to remind ourselves that we have the

responsibility and duty to do everything we can that such a

terrible tragedy will never happen again.

    Dr. György Szapáry

Ambassador of Hungary to the United States
