HOK is a global provider of design services for the built environment. We manage the planning, design, and construction process for all types of projects in every part of the world. Industry surveys consistently rank HOK among the world’s leading design firms.

W E C R E AT E . W E I N S P I R E . W E C O N N EC T. W E C A R E .HOK creates exceptional environments that meet the world’s most complex planning and design challenges. Powerful, aspirational ideas guide our solutions. Our work inspires people while shaping the future. HOK projects transcend their initial purposes to express timeless cultural, organizational and personal values.

Our ability to connect across markets and disciplines in every part of the world allows us to see the “big picture” and, because we approach design from so many different perspectives, gives us an unparalleled ability to innovate. We collaborate with clients and colleagues to create wonderful spaces linking people and place. Our ideas emerge from the intersection of many active minds with vibrant imaginations.

We care deeply about the human experience. Our people understand that HOK’s work has a profound influence on the world, therefore we use design to protect our natural environment and enrich lives.

F I R M H I S T O R YHOK was incorporated in 1955 by three principals with a staff of 26 employees. The firm’s current staff of 1800 in 25 offices around the world includes architects, interior designers, programmers, facility/real estate strategists, and graphic specialists.

Our commitment to design excellence, coupled with our complete familiarity with current problem solving techniques and appropriate building methods and materials, enables HOK to meet any challenge in architectural design, interior design and planning. The most important factor in the success of HOK has been its ability to manage the total planning, design and construction process for projects of any size or scope, and to deliver projects on time and within budget.

HOK’s Science+Technology group programs, plans, and designs all types of laboratories for academic, corporate, and government clients. In the past 20 years, HOK S+T has designed more than 60 million sq. ft. of research, development, and production space.

Our laboratory planners and architects bring a wide range of experience from academic/institutional, corporate and government clients. This brings a combination of knowledge of trends, best practices and research design from the three “markets” with whom most research organizations compete for top talent.

HOK is dedicated to furthering our knowledge of science and technology facilities as a whole. Our group includes more than 90 in-house lab programmers, planners, designers, technical architects and project managers, who work exclusively on Science + Technology projects.

T H O U G H T L E A D E RS H I PA portion of our group’s time is devoted to moving the design of science environments forward through thought leadership, speaking at and leading conferences, publishing articles

in periodicals, and collecting benchmark data on lab design, construction, costs and trends. This leadership and benchmark data enables HOK to show innovation and creativity with each new project. With an intense focus on project delivery we rigorously strive to improve quality through regular critical design reviews, both internal and external.

This group of expert professionals strives to design innovative, flexible facilities that enable critical adjacencies; promote safety, discovery, and creativity; and control operational costs all with a focus on design excellence. Most importantly, they understand science buildings and the organizational, and scientific challenges facing our clients.

D E S I G N I N G T H E L A B S O F T H E F U T U R EHOK S+T’s members derive great satisfaction from designing innovative environments that help researchers and educators make our world a better place. The labs we design:

• Promote collaboration, communication, and interaction: the hallmarks of a successful research environment.

• Protect the health & safety of employees.

• Have flexibility that extends a lab’s life by allowing for changes to research programs, equipment, and protocols.

• Provide an energy-efficient infrastructure that reduces initial, operating, and life cycle costs.

• Incorporate modular principles that enable buildings and labs to easily adapt to different uses.

• Use aesthetics to create attractive, pleasant environments that help organizations recruit and hold onto the best researchers.

• Integrate sustainable design principles to create high-performance, cost-effective lab environments.

• Have highly efficient net-to-gross floor plates that allow the client to maximize the return on its investment.

• Consider serviceability so that maintenance personnel can effectively operate and maintain building systems over time.

• Accommodate future expansion.

D E S I G N O P P O R T U N I T Y F O R R E S E A R C H FAC I L I T I E SHOK’s success in creating world class environments for research stems from a design philosophy which starts with an “inside-out” approach. This approach begins with research and science goals which lead to the lab module, support and office space. This melds with an “outside-in” approach that synchronizes the building within the context of the site and surrounding community/neighborhood. We believe in the synergy between form and function; and that both are integral to the success of a great design.

HOK has designed many exceptional research facilities, but we do not believe in resting on our successes of the past. We do not simply incorporate design features that have worked in previous facilities, but rather, build on the knowledge and experience we have gained to push the envelope in new and exciting ways. We work with each client to incorporate the best, most innovative design features that we, collectively, believe are right to meet the mission, science and recruitment goals they have set.

C O M M I T M E N T T O S U S TA I N A B I L I T YBy developing solutions to enhance aesthetic goals while limiting resource consumption, improving building performance and promoting occupant health and productivity, HOK is leading the way to an increasingly sustainable future.

U N M AT C H E D E X P E R T I S EIn the early ‘90s, HOK chose to build sustainable design into all practice areas, service offerings and regional offices rather than creating a separate specialty group. Our commitment emanates from every level of the organization — from Chairman Bill Valentine, to Integrated Design Director Gerry Faubert, to a network of “Sustainable Managers” in each regional office and practice area.

More than 780 HOK employees have become Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design® (LEED)-accredited through the US Green Building Council (USGBC).

Long before the creation of the LEED green building rating system, HOK developed sustainability checklists by phase and topic.

These resources served as the foundation for The HOK Guidebook for Sustainable Design, widely recognized as one of the design profession’s seminal textbooks.

TA N G I B L E R E S U LT SHOK has convincingly demonstrated that “green” projects can be delivered without compromising budget constraints, aesthetic goals or building performance. Our built projects include office buildings, hospitals, laboratories, corporate campuses, airports, museums, schools and master-planned communities throughout the world. HOK currently has 187 LEED-certified projects, 12 BREEAM-certified projects, 4 Green Mark-certified projects and 1 Green Globe project.

I N D U S T R Y R EC O G N I T I O NHOK’s expertise and leadership have been acknowledged through awards and recognition from leading industry organizations, including:

• For the second consecutive year, HOK ranked #1 on Engineering News-Record’s “Top 100 Green Design Firms.”

Page 7: HOK Science + Technology

• HOK ranked #3 in the inaugural “Architect 100” list published by Architect magazine, based on sustainability, design excellence and profitability.

• HOK’s 15-year commitment and contributions to the green building movement were honored by the US Green Building Council with the “Organizational Excellence” award at the 2006 USGBC Leadership Awards program.

• HOK earned the prestigious 2006 Sustainable Design Leadership Award, presented by CoreNet Global, International Interior Design Association, and American Institute of Architects Committees on the Environment and Interior Architecture. The firm was previously honored with a “Special Commendation” by this international awards program in 2003.

• The HOK Guidebook for Sustainable Design was named 2005 Best Sustainable Practice Winner in the category of Educational Initiatives by the Sustainable Buildings Industry Council (SBIC).

• For six consecutive years, HOK designs were selected for the “Top 10 Green Projects list” by the American Institute of Architects Committee on the Environment.

• HOK is the only design firm to earn the “Designing a Sustainable and Secure World” award from Global Green USA, the US affiliate of Mikhail Gorbachev’s worldwide environmental organization Green Cross International.
