First concept in computer technology to share the processing power of one computer with multiple users 

SPUTNIK 1 was launched by the Soviet Union – October 4, 1957

There had been cold war between US and Russia and

their allies. US was threatened by the launch of

the Sputnik 1.

The US Defense Department

gave orders to DARPA to

ARPA/ARPANET

DARPA planned a large-scale computer network, which then called ARPANET.
