What is AFSPA?

• The full form of AFSPA is Armed Force

(Special Powers ) Act 1958 gives huge powers

to the armed forces of the union; the military

can shoot anyone on suspicion when an area

comes under its purview. No legal action can

be undertaken against the armed forces for

misusing the law without prior approval of the

union government.

Reason for AFSPA

1. Resentment among the Manipuri’s on the

forceful annexation of their princely state

from them.

2. Unethical Naga outfits with their dream of

having a greater Nagaland through integration

of Manipur.

Continued…..

• A joint rebellion of extremist group like PLA,

ULFA spread over Nagaland and Manipur in

1970’S and slogan of liberation has been

raised, the failure of curtailing the rebellion by

state force lead to enforcement of AFSPA in

Nagaland and parts of Manipur called

“disturbed areas”.

Continued…

• But this became draconian because locals were

abducted, tortured, killed without proper

investigation and only on suspicion causing

further resentment among people towards

Indian Union.

Current scenario

• People feel their life with full of awfulness,

live in constant fear of being targeted by army

on false suspicion.

• No consideration of union to curb back AFSPA

from the state.

• Social functioning of the people of the state of

Manipur is being compromised.

Model practiced

Personal social service model

It talks about the benefits which a person should get for his smooth social functioning. It includes: -

• To provide service to those individuals, families etc. whose optimum social functioning is being compromised.

• To spread the social protection on groups which are deliberately prone to exploitation or degradation.
