Hillside is home to over 2000 rescued animals...

Patron: Martin Shaw

Hillside was founded in 1995 and, with just 20 acres of land, we began rescuing animals. Since thenour numbers have steadily grown and we are now home to around 2000 animals living on 550 acreswhich includes Hillside Shire Horse Sanctuary at West Runton. All our animals receive a goodstandard of basic care and our ability to save so many is attributable to the loyal help of oursupporters, without whom we would not have been able to turn a vision into reality.

In 1999 we set up an investigation team to gain our own evidence of the appalling standardsof animal welfare in the factory farming industry. Our undercover work has gone from strength tostrength, resulting in a number of successful prosecutions. We regularly work with high profile TV programmes (such as ‘Tonight with Trevor McDonald’) toraise awareness about the plight of animals used for food.In 2013, Hillside exposed extreme suffering to horses being killed at the Red Lion Abattoir - UK’slargest horse slaughterhouse. Our evidence was handed over to the Food Standards Agency, whopromised to investigate with a view to prosecuting the offenders.

In 2010, Hillside Dog Rescue began taking in, and finding loving homes for dogs in need and wenow have around 70 dogs in our care, waiting to be adopted.

If you would like to secure

Horse Slaughterhouse UpdateDespite our investigation into the Red Lion Abattoir in Nantwich last winter, when we providedfilmed evidence of extreme cruelty to horses being killed there, the Food Standards Agency are still waiting tohear from the Crown Prosecution Service as to whether or not there will be a prosecution of the abattoir’sowners and slaughtermen. This year we have had 40 foals born to pregnant mares that were rescued on route to the slaughterhouse.Unfortunately, the abattoir is the grim fate for thousands of British horses through the selfishness andignorance of horse owners who allow their animals to indiscriminately breed without any thought as to wherethe offspring may end up.Taking animals in and helping them torecover is the easy part of rescuing them. It's the ongoing commitment of caring for,and feeding, them to ensure they are safefor the rest of their natural lives which isthe hardest task. We would like tothank all our supporters and hardworking staff who make this allpossible for the many animals wehave in the Sanctuary.

It was saving horses like Mia and her new-born foal, Misty, that promptedour investigation into the UK's largest slaughterhouse - the Red LionAbattoir in Nantwich - where we filmed horses suffering an horrific death.

Hillside Land Appeal NewsA special ‘thank you’ to all our supporters who have donated towards our appeal to enableus to purchase a small farm which became available close to our Sanctuary at Frettenham. We are excited to let you know that, as this newsletter goes to print, we are about toexchange contracts and complete on this new land. We will bring you pictures and morenews very soon. This extra land and facilities will soon be providing a permanent home, and benefitting many of the animals we have recently given sanctuary to.

Taking his last breath offresh air - a horse looksout of the slaughterhousewindow...

Billy the Bullock

We were recently called out byNorfolk Police at 2.30am oneSunday morning to help thisdistressed bullock who had beenspotted struggling in a local river, and unable to get out. The FireBrigade had come to his rescueand managed to pull him to safetyonto the bank. Frightened, thebullock then sprung to his feetand careered off onto a mainroad and into danger. There wastalk of shooting him until aPoliceman suggested callingHillside for help. Finally, aftermanaging to corral him in anearby industrial estate, andbecause his owner couldn’t betraced, we loaded him onto ourlivestock trailer and brought himback to the safety of Hillsidewhere he now lives peacefullywith our other rescued cows.

Neglected Ponies Arriveat Hillside

May 2013 - We couldn't refuse to helpthis little mare and twelve of her ponyfriends who all arrived here inextremely poor condtion. They have allsurvived and are now living contentedlyin the Sanctuary.

Here is Curly Sue, named so because she is a CurlyHorse - a rather unusual breed. As you can see she hasrecovered very well and still lives with the ponies shewas rescued with.If you look up ‘Curly Horses’ on the internet, it will tellyou more about them.

Rescued Piggy Friends

Every year several newly-born piglets are brought to us whichhave been found on main roads where there isn’t a pig farmnearby. Sows often give birth on the way to theslaughterhouse and the piglets fall from the slats on the lorriesonto the highway. One slaughterhouse worker told us howsows often arrive at the abattoir having given birth on theirfinal journey and the piglets are left floundering around on thelorry until somebody ‘dispatches’ them. The farming industry will try to deny that this happens.

Like Pixie on page 5, recently born,Barney was found by a roadside. His friend, Petal was brought to usby Trading Standards after she wasfound straying in the countryside.

In 2012, inseparable friends Penny,Tabatha and Lily, were just three of ninepigs who came to us as piglets havingbeen found at only a day old strandedon a road.

Deer Rescue...Following a call for help during the summer, we rushed to therescue of two deer on an industrial estate by Gt Yarmouth Quay. One deer had been found injured and before we arrived, we hada call that a second deer had been found on the site wedged inrailings. The staff there had to use a car jack to prise open thebars to free the frightened deer. They turned out to be motherand daughter as one was suckling from the other. Mum must havegot trapped when looking for her offspring. The staff on the siteweren't only concerned about the main road outside but thesteep drop into the water nearby. We are pleased to have beenable to help these deer in their hour of need. Recovering well, mum and daughter were released to live inthe Sanctuary with some of our other rescued deer. They cannot legally be returned to the wild as muntjac aren'tindigenous to this country.

Fully recovered,we found out thatmum deer wasalready pregnant againwhen in the Autumnshe safely gave birthto another daughter.

Black Beauty by Anna Sewell

During the summer months, some Hillsidehorses spend their days grazing in a meadowneighbouring the estate where Anna Sewell, author of Black Beauty, often stayed with heruncle and close to where she is buried.

Anna Sewell, back in the mid Victorian period was, in her own way, a campaignerfor animal welfare and was very much a ‘local girl’. We hope that, if Anna had stillbeen alive today, she would be pleased to know that Hillside Animal Sanctuaryis located so close to her.To celebrate the life of Anna Sewell we are pleased to offer the Wordsworthedition of her book ‘Black Beauty’. A lovely gift for any young person who hasnot yet had the chance to read it...

February 2013 - we were asked to help 32 horsesand ponies that had become unwanted and been abandoned in twoseparate herds. These included mares that were soon due to foal.Nobody had claimed ownership of these horses, several of which were ina shocking condition. Sadly, three were so poor that they didn't survivelong enough to start the journey to safety at Hillside. This rescue came in the wake of Hillside's exposure of extreme crueltyand suffering to horses at the Red Lion Abattoir, Britain's biggest horseslaughterhouse, based in Nantwich. We are just so pleased to have beenable to save these surviving horses from a similar fate.

June 2013 - Here's Hannah andDancer who had been abandonedwith the rest of their herd.Although the staff at Hillside putin all the hard work looking afterso many rescued animals, successstories like this are ONLY madepossible through the kinddonations of our caringsupporters. Thank you.

Dear FriendWe were recently alerted to the plight of this little mongrelpuppy when we were asked to take him in. Two weekspreviously his owner had accidently trodden on his leg and, although this had left him disabled, the puppy hadn't receivedany veterinary attention. On arrival here, we immediatelytook six week old Franklin to see our vet who advised usthat, because his Achilles tendon was seriously damaged, hemust be referred to a specialist veterinary surgeon if his leg isto be saved. A consultation has now been organised but weknow that this, and future surgery, will be expensive. He maybe just one little puppy but every life is precious and we wantto do whatever we can to help him. If you would like to helplittle Franklin to get better, any small amount you would like

to give will be very gratefully appreciated.T Thank you.

A big ‘thank you’ toeveryone who has beendonating to helpFranklin... if we arelucky enough to receiveextra funds, they willgo towards helping ourother rescued dogs.

You may remember that earlier in the year we were contacted by BridgendTrading Standards who requested our help with a major rescue. They wereplanning to seize a large herd of ex-dairy cows and calves who were sufferingextreme neglect. Around 40 were so emaciated that they had already died or hadto be euthanised on welfare grounds. In the short time a rescue could beorganised, a further 20 had perished or were just too weak to make the journeyto safety. The cows were passed into Hillside's care but, as most were too weakto withstand the trip to Norfolk, the 90 survivors were moved to a safe haven inWales where they have been receiving the best of care.

Recovered after their ordeal, the cows graze contently out inthe fields. Trading Standards arein the process of prosecutingthe farmer for serious neglectof the cows.We would like to thank everyone of our supporters who hashelped these cows to survive...

Cows in Crisis...

Emaciated, the cows, spend theirfirst day on a straw bed, something they hadn’texperienced in a long time.

This scheme is entirely separate from our usual ‘Adopt a RescuedAnimal’ scheme and we are asking for a donation of your choice.

We will ‘introduce’ your chosen dog with his/her story and picture, with another photo to follow later in the year. We will also send youa keyring featuring your dog. If you would like to give this as a presentto somebody at a different address, we will also send you the doggydetails too.

Please note: If the dog you are helping is lucky enough to find a lovinghome, or sadly dies, we will automatically introduce you to anotherdog that needs your help. Thank you.

Sponsoring a dog helps to feed andcare for a dog that has been withus long-term, either because a goodhome has not been forthcoming orthey are unsuitable for the ordinaryfamily environment and would requirea special home.

At only three weeks old, Coco the foal was recentlydiscovered abandoned and alone on a country lane. Afteran extensive search neither his mother or his owner wereanywhere to be seen. Brian the deer, who was also found

injured as a tiny fawn without his mum, has welcomedCoco into 'his' garden and is his constant companion.Although other horses live adjacent to Coco, he is too

young to be part of their herd for the time being.
