TrafficBoxThe TrafficBox is Peek Traffic’s response to a market,

requiring a flexible and compact roadside platform for

distributed motorway systems. The TrafficBox stands for

innovation and reliability. It has been developed for the

European market.

FunctionalityA TrafficBox monitors and controls a certain part of a

motorway. The functionality it offers depends on the appli-

cations that are installed. Peek Traffic has an extensive

range of applications available for the TrafficBox.

Applications are designed to maximize safety, flow and fuel

efficiency. For example, the TrafficBox can autonomously

detect incidents and warn traffic upstream. Or in case of

heavy pollution the TrafficBox will automatically lower the

speed limits. Road workers’ safety is guaranteed by placing

cross measures on certain lanes.

In many cases, the MTM applications are installed on a

TrafficBox. MTM stands for Motorway Traffic Management,

which consists of an extensive set of inter-urban applica-

tions.

ArchitectureThe architecture of the TrafficBox is developed, based on

the principle of distributed intelligence. All components

communicate with an IP network layer. This enables

components, which are hosted on different TrafficBoxes, to

share information with each other.

The TrafficBox’ also uses the concept of graceful

degradation. When communication fails the TrafficBox

will continue its safety critical tasks. This is achieved by

dynamically switching to local algorithms.

ApplicabilityThe TrafficBox compact design will make it fit everywhere.

And long communication ranges to actuators and sensors

make it possible to place it at any convenient location.

All applications and configurations are managed from a

central server. The TrafficBox can also be locally configured

by means of a laptop. Service engineers have access to all

status and diagnostics reports by means of a user-friendly

web interface.

The TrafficBox is solid by design and built to last. All

components are designed for harsh climatic conditions

like extended temperatures, moisture and vibration.

Furthermore, the Operation System is based on a robust

version of Linux. All these design choices have resulted in a

product of extremely high reliability and durability.
