IntroductionFamous Quotation: "There's not an American in this country free until every one is free."Best known for: He paved the

way for other blacks to join the

    league.

    3 Key Qualities:1. Overcame a Hardship/

    Challenge2. Demonstrated Bravery3. Took action

What I find interesting: He was

the first black player in the

major league and the first towin Rookie of the Year.

I chose this person because he

was a baseball player and I like

    baseball.

    Overcame a Hardship/Challenge

    He was the first African

    American in baseball in

    1947. He was teased when

    he started playing

    professional white baseballbecause his teammates

    didn't want black people on

the team.I think the hardship is he

    would be scared that they

might hurt him and that he

might not be able to play

    anymore.

    Showed Compassion and Empathy

    Jackie Robinson wanted

    to help his mom by

    earning money by

    mowing other people'slawns and delivered

    paper.I think that Jackie

    Robinson was

    compassionate because

    he was helping his

    family.

    Took Action

    Jackie Robinson wanted

    to help the Civil Rights

    Movement. He picketed

    and marched in the

    1960 to get equal rights.

    I think he wasn't just

    playing baseball he took

    time to help other

    blacks and himself getequal rights.

    recruited to the Kansas

    City Monarchs. In1946

Jackie Robinson gotrecruited to the Brooklyn

    Dodgers.I think Jackie Robinson

    wanted to play Major

League Baseball really badlyso he kept trying to play in

    the major league since he

    was at UCLA in 1939.

Impact: How Things are Different Today

    Blacks are playing

    baseball because of

    Jackie Robinson. People

from different culturesplay baseball. I think think that Jackie

    Robinson did the right

    thing because other

    blacks want to playwhite baseball.

    Demonstrated Bravery

    In 1949 Coach Rickey

    told him he would be

    teased and Jackie kept

playing baseball.I think it is bravebecause Jackie pushed

    himself to keep trying

    even though he was

    being teased.

Communicated and SharedHe talked to other

    people about Civil

Rights.I think he is doing theright thing because he is

    inspiring other blacks to

    fight for their rights. He

    is making the white

people realize that thelaws are unfair.
