And they were all young men, and they were exceedingly valiant
for courage, and also for strength and activity; but behold, this
was not allthey were men who were true at all times in
whatsoever thing they were entrusted. Yea, they were men of
truth and soberness, for they had been taught to keep the
commandments of God and to walk uprightly before him. Alma
53:2021
The people of Ammon, who were called the Anti-Nephi-Lehies,
had covenanted with God never to kill, even in war. They lived in
the land of Zarahemla, where Nephite armies protected them
from the Lamanites. (See Alma 53:1012.)
However, as the Anti-Nephi-Lehies saw the danger and
everything the Nephites suffered for them, they wanted tobreak their covenant and fight to defend themselves. But
Helaman, the leader of the Church, persuaded them not to fight.
He worried that they might lose their souls if they broke their
covenants. (See Alma 53:1315.)

The Anti-Nephi-Lehies had many sons who had not made the
covenant not to go to war. Two thousand of these young men
gathered together and promised to defend the liberty of their
people and the Nephites. They asked Helaman to be their leader.
(See Alma 53:1619.)
Although they were young, these men were strong and brave.
Most important, they were trustworthy and obeyed God's
commandments; "they were men of truth" (Alma 53:21; see also
Alma 53:20). Helaman called them his sons, and they called him
father. When Helaman asked them if they were willing to go to
battle, they answered, "Father, behold our God is with us, and hewill not suffer that we should fall; then let us go forth" (Alma
56:46; see also Alma 56:4445).
These brave young men did not fear death. They valued the
freedom of their people more than their own lives. Their mothers
had taught them that if they trusted in God, He would protect
them. (See Alma 56:4748.)
Helaman led his young warriors in a terrible battle against the
Lamanites. With the help of Helaman's army, the Nephites won
the battle. Helaman feared that many of his sons had been killed,
but to his great joy, he found that not one had been killed. The
young men had fought with the strength of God, and He had
protected them. (See Alma 56:49, Alma 56:5456; Alma 58:39.)

StoryWe are going to talk about the difference between Super heroes and the
stripling warriors. First talk about how Super heroes set a good example.
Print off and cut out the Manners Super heroes figures and descriptions.Glue the description of each super hero to his or her corresponding figures
and laminate. Glue a Popsicle stick to the end of them and read the
scenarios while holding up the pictures. Then discuss which super hero yourchild would use.
Next talk about how the Stripling Warriors were better than Super heroes
because they had the Holy Ghost to guide and protect them while they weresetting a good example. Read the story below to your child.
I was so excited to tell Mom and Dad about Primary that I had ahard time sitting still in sacrament meeting. My mind kept
wandering back to the story about the sons of Helaman in the
Book of Mormon. Now I knew what I wanted to be for our
neighborhood super hero costume party this yearone of the two
thousand stripling warriors! I just hoped that Mom could make my
costume. I kept imagining how cool I would look with a big gold
shield and armbands like the young men in the picture.
On the way home, I told Mom and Dad about my idea. My sisterstarted to laugh, but I didnt care. At school recess the next day,
when I told my friend Jacob about my costume, we got into an
argument because he wanted to be one of the sons of Helaman
too. Then we decided that itd be great if we dressed alike.
After school, the guys I play baseball with heard us talking about
it and wanted to be stripling warriors, tooand lots of them
werent even members of the Church! I knew my dad would be
happy to hear that Id been talking about the Book of Mormonwith my friends, but I was a little nervous about telling my mom
that I had volunteered her to make all the costumes! Fortunately,
when they heard about it, the other moms volunteered to help
make the costumes.
That night in family home evening, we talked about the two

thousand sons of Helaman and super heroes. At first I thought it
was just a coincidence, but during the lesson, I realized that Mom
and Dad wanted me to see that there was more to the story than
handsome young men with shields and weapons and fighting. Super
heroes serve people but the stripling warriors served with the
Holy Ghost as their protection and guide. I guess I missed that
important part in Primary because I was thinking about my
costume. I was impressed that night not only by their courage in
defending their country and religion and families but also because
they had listened to their mothers and were obedient to the
things that were taught to them.
As I lay in bed that night, I realized that I could be like one ofHelamans sons by being obedient to myparents and keeping the
commandments. One of the things Mom and Dad had always
taught me was to be kind and to serve others. I knew that it was
just as important for me to serve those around me as it was for
the sons of Helaman to fight for their freedom. And I had an
idea.
The next day at school I told Jacob what I wanted to do. He
looked at me a little weird at first, but then decided it was apretty good idea. At recess we all got together and made our
plan.
It was fun for all of us to wear our costumes to the neighborhood
party. But the best part was after school the next day. We put on
our costumes again, but this time our weapons were rakes and
brooms and garbage bags. We raked leaves and swept driveways
and porches in our neighborhood. We were an army of second
graders, fighting with love and service. The neighbors watchedus out their windows with smiles on their faces. I dont think Ive
ever had such a good time. And I realized that being a Super
hero is exciting but having the Holy Ghost to help me serve
others and choose the right feels even better. I would choose
the Stripling Warriors over a Super hero ANYDAY!

Activity
Make a super hero cape. You can do this by gluing the first letter in your
childs name to the back of a garbage bag or decorate an actual piece offabric. Decorate your cape according to the example of the stripling
warriors. They listened to their parents and obeyed, they had the Holy
Ghost with them and they stood up for what was right.
