WHAT’S DRIVING THE EPIDEMIC?

POOR INFORMATION Only 30% of youth demonstrate comprehensive HIV knowledge.

LACK OF TESTING AND TREATMENT Fewer than ½ of infected individuals know their status; these people are 96% more likely to infect someone else.

HARMFUL GENDER NORMS In many countries, more than 1/3 of girls have experienced sexual violence by age 18.

STIGMA Stigma and discrimination contribute to fear of testing and a lack of support for HIV+ individuals.

LACK OF MEDICAL MALE CIRCUMCISION About 85% of men are not circumcised, a procedure which reduces a man’s risk contracting HIV by 60%.

RISKY BEHAVIORS Older partners, overlapping partners, and drug and alcohol abuse all fuel the epidemic.

RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT To solve a problem you have to understand the problem and the context that it exists in. How you solve it follows.

GRS has conducted 19 research studies in 8 countries, including multi-year RCTs.

COMMUNICATION Organizations must communicate with local communities, governments, funders, the research community, and partner organizations.

Good communication builds a strong brand, improves an NGO’s potential impact, and spreads knowledge.

Page 24: Health Careers Institute at Dartmouth | Grassroot Soccer

ORGANIZATIONAL STRATEGY All organizations need to look at the big picture and position themselves for success from an operational and business standpoint.

Page 25: Health Careers Institute at Dartmouth | Grassroot Soccer

BUSINESS DEVELOPEMENT It costs a lot to tackle a big problem. GRS is an $8 million non-profit. Every year we have to fill the budget through private and government grants, corporate partnerships, donations, and whatever we can think of. This requires creativity and entrepreneurship.

SOME TAKEAWAYS COMPLEXITY An epidemic is the result of many drivers, some related and some independent.

MULTIFACETED SOLUTIONS To stop an epidemic, you have to address its drivers. These could be knowledge-based, political, cultural, medical…almost anything.

MANY ROLES TO PLAY There are many ways to help eradicate an epidemic. Education, research, marketing, and policy all play a part.

“SPORT HAS THE POWER TO CHANGE THE WORLD. IT HAS THE POWER TO INSPIRE, IT HAS THE POWER TO UNITE PEOPLE IN A WAY THAT LITTLE ELSE DOES. IT SPEAKS TO YOUTH WITH A LANGUAGE THEY UNDERSTAND. SPORT CAN CREATE HOPE, WHERE ONCE THERE WAS ONLY DESPAIR.”

- NELSON MANDELA
