Page 2 Newsletter Title RHSC New Changing Room Extension Completed From 3 January 2017, Tolletts, the contractors, made fast work of getting the build underway and on track. On 8 May the new changing rooms were completed and the project completion certificate issued. Very many thanks to everyone on the sub group who attended site meetings with the architect and Tolletts, members who gave up their time to help paint the cladding and carry out the internal decorations and everyone who organised and took part in some great fund raising over the past 18 months - well done for such a tremendous effort. Many thanks to Tolletts, especially Jon Crafer and Andy Tollett who were supportive with any problems encountered during this project. The quality of the new extension speaks for itself.

Phase 1 is complete! We have already laid the foundation of the boat shed and are now gearing up for some more fundraising events so that we can build the boat shed as soon as possible because we are in need of protective boat storage space. Please look out for the following events and support them. Thanks to the generosity of Jim and Gill Wood we are holding a barn dance at their barn at Oxenbridge Farm, Wittersham Road, Iden on Saturday 17 June. Tickets £15 are limited to 60. So as to avoid disappointment book now. Please see poster page 8. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! A comparison between the Club’s impressive new changing rooms and the other parts of the Club house highlights the need for refurbishment of the main part of the Club house pending further works to convert the old changing rooms. The Club’s management committee has therefore decided to arrange for the redecoration of the interior of the Club house by volunteers from EDF. The committee will also be carrying out the redecoration of the exterior and some other works during the month of June and volunteers are needed to assist with these tasks. RHSC Sailability all set to move forward We have now received confirmation from HMRC that RHSC Sailability has charitable status. This is good news and we can now finally get RHSC Sailability up and running. Andrew and Glenda Wilson are finalising the process and procedures manual and Luey, the Sport 16, donated to us by Sussex Sailability, has been repaired by Mick Kirby and his team and Anna Knight is arranging a test sail. With the funding from The Rye Community Shop Anna Knight has purchased 20 buoyancy aids. We hold our next Sailability meeting on Wednesday 7 June. Page 4 Newsletter Title Push the boat out RHSC by Sarah Nelson The sun shone but force five winds made challenging conditions for the skippers from Rye Harbour Sailing Club (RHSC), who pushed their boats out last weekend to encourage everyone to have a go at sailing.

As a member of RHSC I spent Saturday and Sunday afternoons helping people into life jackets of all shapes and sizes before they clambered aboard for a taster sail. The RYA encourages clubs to host annual ‘Push the Boats Out’ and last year saw over 350 venues across the UK getting 20,000 people out on the water.

Of the nearly 40 adults and children who tried sailing at RHSC over the weekend, some had no sailing experience, a few had sailed as children with keen sailor parents, two people with disabilities found that sailing was something they

could really enjoy, and a new club member, moving from London to Hastings, wanted to learn all about the dinghy she had just bought and knew nothing about! On Saturday the majestic cruisers and perky dinghies were afloat, while on Sunday the dinghies and the motorised Carey Marsh, took people up and down the River Rother. Carey Marsh, of the boat of the same name, is the patriarch of three generations of sailors. Both his son Simon and grandson Edward took people sailing this weekend. Edward Marsh provided high drama on Sunday, diving into the river to swim after his topper, which, loosened from its mooring had bobbed off without him. Faster than you can tie a bowline, the Carey Marsh was on the scene and lassoed the escaped topper. Edward slid back in, picked up his next passenger and whizzed off again. Welcome refreshments were on sale in the clubhouse and children took advantage of the nautically themed craft table. New member, Esme made a flotilla of coloured paper boats which she decorated with Push the Boat Out stickers.

The decked area, proved a popular spot to watch the boats go by. Knot tying and splicing were demonstrated while tasty sausages and burgers sizzled on the BBQ

The club house had been brushed and scrubbed for the occasion as it was showing off a brand new shower block, open for the first time and forming part of a refurbishment project for which the club is currently raising funds.

Learning to sail can be a life changing experience, acknowledged by many who left the club feeling excited at having been afloat on the river or sea for the first time. Rye Harbour Sailing Club offers another opportunity to try sailing on Saturday 10th June, times to be confirmed and all welcome.

It is not recommended that anyone usually swim in the River Rother, due to the very strong tidal current and regular use by large shipping vessels and our fishing fleet.

Attention PTBO Volunteers RHSC are proud to have been able to push the boat out again this year and many thanks go to some 40club members who volunteered to run the weekend event and to make it such a success. The event was co-ordinated by John Powell and we raised just over £230.00 for the club refurbishment project. This annual event couldn’t go ahead without the volunteers who give up their time to give others a chance to have a sail.

Mark Whiteman Anna Knight with tasters Neil Thomas RHSC Coffee Morning a Great Successhe RHSC coffee morning at Oxenbrige Farm, Iden, held on Saturday 20 May, was a great success and well attended by members and the public. There were various stalls selling plants, jewellery, knitted items, silk scarves, cakes and produce to name but a few. Club members had volunteered to make an array of delicious cakes as well as serve teas and coffees.

There was a short shower first thing and then the skies cleared and the sun shone and we raised an amazing £440.00. Many thanks go to Jen and David Tomkinson, Joan Taylor, Ellan Crooks and Claire Powell all club volunteers, as well as to Gill and Jim Wood (also club members) for their generosity in allowing RHSC the use of their beautiful gardens and barn and of course to everyone who turned out on the day to support the event.

Don’t forget to book tickets for the Barn Dance at the same venue on Saturday 17 June. This is being held in conjunction with Iden Church. Tickets are limited so please see poster on page 9 for details. Remember everything we raise is to improve the clubhouse for all members

Rye Harbour Sailing Club Dinghy Race 28 May 2017 – Report By John Powell This year’s first series of dinghy races at Rye Harbour Sailing Club have been characterised by the good weather. Of the eight races to date, only two have had to be held on the River Rother due to poor conditions. Bank Holiday Sunday, though not as bright as previous days, was warm with a fairly light wind. Eleven competitors turned up to race in Rye Bay under the control of the Officer of the Day – Simon Marsh. Of the eleven, eight were sailing Laser dinghies which made a striking sight as they sailed down the Rother to Rye Bay. With the number of boats on the water, jostling for a good start position on the start line demanded the best in boat handling skills and concentration (bumping into each other incurs significant penalties). At the off a few boats had achieved the important advantage of being on a starboard tack (giving right of way over those on a port tack). After a flurry of cries of ‘starboard’ to give warning, things settled down into a steady race where individual pairs were fighting it out to achieve a better position. Boats could be seen attempting to turn early to head off other boats at the turning marks amid cries of ‘hold your course’ as boats were being overtaken. Jeremy and Alison Short took and maintained an early lead in a Laser 4000 dinghy coming first – no repeat of a previous capsize in rougher conditions here. George Short came second and John Powell third both sailing Laser dinghies. As ever with Rye Harbour Sailing Club, the emphasis was on fun – after the race competitors were able to clean up and get changed in the brand new changing facilities which will be formally opened on 1 July. Competitors ranged in age from 14 to over 60, a healthy mix of male and female reflecting the club’s intention to become more inclusive. It is to be hoped that we will soon start to see less well abled sailors competing as the ‘Sailability’ charity that the club supports begins to have an effect.
