Preparing for Next Sunday Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

Our first reading prescribes how to grow in holiness and in our relationship with God and others. In the second reading, we are told that we are temples of the Holy Spirit. In the Gospel, Jesus takes the teaching to love our neighbor as ourselves, which is found in our first reading, and expands it to include loving our enemies.

Confirmation Spaghetti Fundraisers The last opportunity to get your spaghetti and meatballs before Lent. The second spaghetti fundraiser will be held on Sunday, February 23, from 11:30 AM - 1:30 PM in the Parish Hall. Pre-sale tickets are $7 and can be purchased from Confirmation candidates or in the OLMC Bookstore. Tickets are $8 at the door. Join us for some fellowship and special guest entertainment. Faith Formation will be hosting a fundraiser for our church each Friday night from Friday, March

7, 2014 through Friday, April 11, 2014 at 6:30 PM in the Parish Hall. Please look for our flyer with the Lenten Dinner Menu in the upcoming bulletins. All plates for $8.00 with a drink and dessert included. Look for more information in the coming weeks.

OLMC School News Mt. Carmel Students Dress for Success! One of our theme days in celebration of Catholic Schools Week is "Dress for Success" day, in which students may come dressed as a person working in a career that they may choose. Students came dressed as a variety of things, including lawyers, soldiers, and firemen. We invited guest speakers to speak about their careers/jobs to the students. This year one of those speakers was our very own pastor, Fr. Abelardo Cobos, who spoke about the priesthood and religious vocations. Another speaker was Dr. Carlos Monroy who came to speak to students about computer technology, programming, and video game programming. The students had lots of questions and enjoyed the chance to learn more about careers they may one day choose. OLMC Student Succeeds in UST Essay Contest Each year the University of St. Thomas holds an essay contest for the students of the Catholic Schools of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. Thousands of entries are submitted each year, with 700-900 finalists per grade level. This contest is for students in grades 3 through 8, and has a topic that changes each year. This year's writing prompts centered around the life and influence of Pope John Paul II, and students were able to express their responses to one of a choice of prompts on this topic. We are proud to announce that one of our 3rd grade students, Alan Vazquez, received Honorable Mention for his essay, and was presented with an award personally by Archbishop Fiorenza following a mass in celebration of this accomplishment. We are proud of all of our students and their work! Please join us in congratulating Alan Vazquez on his accomplishment.

Noticias de la Escuela OLMC Los estudiantes del Monte Carmelo se visten para el éxito!

Uno de nuestros días temáticos en la celebración de la Semana de las Escuelas Católicas es el día de "Vestidos para el éxito", en el cual los estudiantes pueden venir vestidos como una persona que trabaja en alguna carrera profesional de su preferencia. Los estudiantes llegaron vestidos con una gran variedad de profesiones, incluyendo abogados, soldados y bomberos. Hemos invitado a algunas personas para hablarles a los estudiantes sobre sus propias carreras y empleos. Este año uno de los invitados fue nuestro propio párroco, el Padre Abelardo Cobos, quien nos habló sobre el sacerdocio y las vocaciones religiosas. Otro orador fue el Dr. Carlos Monroy que vino a hablar con los estudiantes acerca de la tecnología informática, la programación y la programación de videojuegos. Los alumnos tuvieron muchas preguntas y disfrutaron de la oportunidad de aprender más sobre las carreras que algún día ellos escogerán para su vida.

Un estudiante de la escuela NSMC logra el éxito en el concurso de ensayos de la Universidad Santo Tomás Cada año la Universidad Santo Tomás tiene un concurso de ensayos para los estudiantes de las Escuelas Católicas de la Arquidiócesis de Galveston-Houston. Se presentan miles de composiciones escritas cada año, con 700 a 900 finalistas por cada grado. Este concurso es para los estudiantes de los grados 3ro. a 8vo. y tiene un tema que cambia cada año. Los

ejercicios de escritura de este año se centraron en torno a la vida y a la influencia del Papa Juan Pablo II, y los estudiantes pudieron así expresar sus respuestas a una de los ensayos sobre este tema. Estamos muy orgullosos de anunciar que Alan Vázquez, uno de nuestros estudiantes de 3er grado, recibió Mención de Honor por su ensayo, y el premio le fue entregado por medio de las manos del Sr. Arzobispo Fiorenza después de una Misa que se realizó para celebrar este gran logro. Igualmente, estamos orgullosos de todos nuestros estudiantes y de sus trabajos! Por favor únase a nosotros para felicitar a Alan Vázquez en su maravilloso logro.
