letter from
the director
Dear FriendsOf Happy Trails,
Here I sit at OSU (Ohio
State University Veterinary
Teaching Hospital) in Colum-
bus, holding a young goat who
was born with only half of his
back legs — they never fin-
ished forming below his knees.
Baby Radar, left to fend for
himself in a very large, very
cramped heard of much bigger
goats, rams and cows, was sure to
be trampled to death. Instead of
this becoming his fate in the hands
of an uncaring livestock trader, he
instead was rescued, treated for
pneumonia and worm infestation,
was later given a clean bill of
health, and then adopted by a
family who loves him to pieces.
Radar gets along great and has
adopted to life with the shorter
stumps that make up his back legs.
He obviously loves to gives kisses
and thrives on attention.
His is a “happy ending” story. I
wish we were able to make that a
reality for all the animals we come
in contact with. Some of the
animals that are brought to Happy
Trails are fortunate enough to be
able to travel the road to recovery
— a road filled with love, kindness,
soft blankets, belly rubs, heat
lamps, comforting words, warm
straw and delicious treats. Others,
however, have been abused or
neglected past the point of recov-
ery, and through our tears we give
them the compassion of a humane
death and the dignity of a respect-
ful burial in the Pet Cemetery.

Who In The World WouldWant A Rooster As A Pet?Mary highly recommends it!
How did Dorito arrive atyour farm in the first
place?
I was volunteering at HappyTrails when I first met Dorito. He was very nice to somepeople but decided otherswere not to be trusted, so hewould peck at them. He alsodidn’t want any competitionfrom other chickens so hewould fight them off. Annettedecided I’d be the perfectrooster mom since he likedme and we had alreadybonded. So, Dorito camehome with me one night—much to my husband’ssurprise! (But, not to worry,Dorito decided my husbandwas the best, and the roosterfollows him around like a
puppy. Now they’re best buds.)
Before you worked with Dorito ,had you ever considered having arooster as a pet?
Before I worked with Dorito I neverconsidered a rooster at all!! I didn’tknow roosters until I started volunteer-
ing at Happy Trails.
I know you have a variety of otherpets. Does Dorito get along withthe other animals at your farm, ordoes he have to stay caged up?
He definitely does not have to staycaged. Dorito rules the roost. Thehorses couldn’t care less and the dogsand cats give him a lot of space. Doritostruts when he wants to establish thathe’s the boss. It’s very funny. Once hestarts strutting they all clear out. Hedoesn’t have to do anything else.Except, he’s best friends with oursmallest barn cat. They sleep on thesame pillow together. If the big barn catstarts to give the little one a hard time,Dorito struts over and the big cat backs
off.
Mary Bittence, Happy Trails Board Member and true-blue
animal-lover, is totally in love with Dorito, her pet rooster that
she adopted from Happy Trails. This interview with Mary gives
you a sneak-peak at the wonders of having a pet rooster as part
of your feathered family!
Continued on page 9
Most people think of roosters asbeing very mean and aggressive.Does Dorito let you hold him andpet him?
I hold and pet Dorito every day, severaltimes a day. He makes a soft cooingsound when I do and if I’m cleaning inthe barn and don’t give him enoughattention, then he comes over andgently pulls at my jeans until I pick himup. Or, if he’s feeling a little moreassertive, he pecks lightly on my shoes
until I pet him.
Can you share a funny story with
us about Dorito?
There are so many—let me think. Onceshortly after the big barn cat wasdumped on us, Dorito was peckingaround just looking for bugs and cameclose to the cat. The cat arched hisback and swatted at Dorito. Wrongmove—first rule of the barn is “don’tmess with the rooster.” Dorito flew at thecat, who was taken aback and tore upthe hayloft stairs. They’re fine now aslong as the cat keeps his distance.
Dorito also likes to play “mad cuckooclock.” We have a small opening underthe back porch where he likes to hideand roost. Then when visitors comeover he flies out and rushes at them. Italways gets a startled response whichsets Dorito into a crowing mode as if tosay, “I am the man.”
One day my husband called me at workand said he thought Dorito had beenkilled by a predator. He had found a pileof Dorito’s feathers by our bank barnand no sign of the rooster. We searchedand searched for two days and foundnothing. I was broken hearted—I lovethat boy. Then very early one morning, while I was playing with my dogs, Iheard a faint crow. I dismissed itbecause I just figured I’d imagined itsince I so wanted to find Dorito. A fewminutes later I heard it again. I looked

interests and hence rights, including the right
to live free of unnecessary suffering. MFA is

ber, Rob Willard, a truly inspira-
tional presentation was created
which included an introduction to
the sanctuary and the facilities, a
review of the fun, comical and
amusing antics and behaviors of the
many farm animals who have
entered the gates of the sanctuary,
an in-depth look at
their abusive situa-
tions and what led
them to the gates of
Happy Trails in the
first place, and
examples of how
folks can get in-

about the precious and
heart-warming stories of the
joy and companionship that
the farm animals have
brought to all who have the

them, as well as details of
some of the undercover
investigations that have
taken place.
Over 70 guests attended

An investigation into horrificanimal neglect and cruelty at anOhio livestock farm recently resultedin the rescue oftwo precious, 8-week oldpiglets. Sophie(pronouncedwith a short “o”),had largemasses overher legs andover her lefteye. Surgery atOSU (OhioState VeterinaryTeachingHospital)resulted in thediscovery ofsystemicarthritis at thisearly age. Her shoulder joint nolonger existed, and the damagedone to the inflamed leg joints werebeyond repair. Soon walking wouldbe a thing of the past, as her painfulmasses were growing quickly andwould ultimately cause her to losethe use of her legs. The kindest andmost humane thing to do for ourprecious little Sophie was to helpher cross the Rainbow Bridge.
Pigcasso will always be knownfor having the softest fur of any piganywhere...ever! He was a kind andgentle soul, who through the neglectof humans, was starving to death.Instead of providing him with theproper veterinary care that herequired early on, his condition wasleft untreated, and the results wereintestinal damage that was beyondrepair. After two different visits toOSU to try to save this preciousbaby, the last visit resulted in a grimprognosis. Pigcasso was continuing
to rapidly lose weight, and after allpossible medical treatments, tests, diets and remedies were applied,Pigcasso still had become so weakhe could no longer stand and hethen developed pneumonia. After
exhausting all medical measurespossible, it was time to let him gorun across the green fields of piggyheaven with his pig friend, Sophie, who I am positive was there to greethim when he arrived.
The abuse and neglect ofanimals in the food industry is trulyheartbreaking. These sweet, gentlecreatures have brought much loveand joy to the volunteers at HappyTrails who have the awesomeopportunity to work with and aroundthem, though often their time with usis short and bittersweet. The pigletsshowed their affection for us withpeaceful grunts, oinks and nose-nudges of affection and gratitude.
May the lives of Sophie andPigcasso inspire you to makecompassionate decisions in thefoods that you choose, the productsthat you buy, and the clothes thatyou wear. Together, we can spreadkindness, compassion and humanetreatment for all animals!

all over in the field from wherethe sound seemed to be comingbut found nothing. I ran upstairsto tell my husband and he randown too, so we could search. Then we both heard it andfigured out the direction. Therewas my boy across the road inthe neighbor’s field. I ran acrossRt. 422 in my nightshirt andjeans, swooped up Dorito andstood at the corner of a verybusy intersection bawling myeyes out I was so happy. I’msure the commuters thatmorning are still trying to figureout what that was all about.Except for missing somefeathers, he was fine; but I betthere’s a blind fox out theresomewhere!! (This is why wenow have a secure day pen forhim when we’re not home.)
There isn’t a day that goes bythat Dorito doesn’t make me laugh.
Why should people consideradopting a rooster as a pet? Andwhat should they know about theproper care and shelter for a pet
chicken?
Dorito has more personality than mostpeople I know. He’s fun to be aroundand I love all the sounds he makes. When he’s content (like when he roostsin the cat carrier or is following myhusband helping to fix fences) he hasthis sound like a leaking balloon; it’sgreat to listen to.
You do need a safe, secure place forhim at night and during the day if youaren’t out watching him. There are lotsof predators in the rural areas justwaiting to get their paws or claws on achicken. At night, Dorito goes into our
tack room which is now secured withchicken wire and we built a day pen forhim for days when we aren’t home. When we’re home he can “free range.”Also, he needs to be kept warm if thetemperature drops below 20. You cando that by getting heat lamps. We keephim warm by bringing him into thecellar, but not everyone thinks it’s a hootto wake up to crowing coming from justbelow your feet.
Can folks contact you if they areconsidering adopting a rooster?
Absolutely! I love talking about Dorito. He’s been a wonderful spokesrooster tohelp me learn how wonderful theseanimals are. I now can’t imagine lifewithout Dorito. Call me at (440) 834-0233, and I can help you adopt awonderful pet rooster!

Rob Willard Organizes Happy TrailsAll-Volunteer Animal Emergency Crew
Happy Trails has been in theprocess of organizing and establish-ing an all-volunteer emergency crewfor quite some time now. We’d liketo take this opportunity to thank the
many horse-haulers, dispatch folks, sanctuary helpers and emergencyfoster homes who have steppedforward to offer assistance in manyemergency situations over this pastyear.
Since Happy Trails is a supportorganization for Ohio county humanesocieties, animal protective leagues
and law enforcement officials whenthey find themselves in a situation ofremoving a farm animal or horsefrom a situation of abuse, abandon-ment or neglect, we are often called
upon at the very last momentto provide assistance. Beingan all-volunteer organization, this can truly be a challenge.
Folks who have (and arecontinuing to) sign up toparticipate in our all-volunteeremergency crew, are nothingbut the best! All it takes is youbeing willing to allow us to callyou and ask for your assis-tance when an emergencyarises — if you are available, you are welcome to help, andif you are not available, we willcatch up with you when thenext emergency call comesin.
Emergency volunteers helpin quite a variety of ways.
Folks with trucks and trailersare always needed to helphaul rescued animals tosafety. A variety of trailers arealways beneficial, since younever know what we arepicking up. It can be anassortment of fifty chickens,
turkeys, geese and ducks in cagesas in one instance; it could besixteen horses in another instance; itcould be a single pot belly pig as inone case; it could be forty fourcockfighting roosters as in anothercase; or it could be two hundredand twenty goats as in a previoussituation — you never know. Folkswith capabilities to haul large
animals, especially draft horses, arelike gold to our emergency crew!
People are always needed tohelp with dispatch. This includescalling volunteers with trailers to seewho is available to haul, callingfoster homes to see who has anopen stall, calling the appropriatevet who will be seeing this particulargroup of animals, and keepingtouch with the authorities at thescene. Dispatch folks will be trainedon how to handle these calls.
Emergency foster homes arehomes who are willing to take on thecare of and provide shelter for ananimal in an emergency situation. The foster home may choose tofoster the animal for a short periodof time until a more permanent fosterhome can be located, or they maychoose to foster an animal through-out an entire trial. Foster homes withthe ability to quarantine are worththeir weight in gold also. Normally, equine quarantines are 30’ awayfrom other horses for a period of 30days. The feed, hay, bedding andmedical expenses of an animal isnormally paid for by either thehumane society or animal protectiveleague that is responsible in thatcounty, or by Happy Trails, depend-ing on each individual circumstanceand how and why the animals arebeing removed from a situation.
If you have any questions thatyou need answered or would liketo talk about participating in theHappy Trails All-Volunteer Emer-gency Animal Rescue Crew, giveEmergency Crew Director, RobWillard, a call at (330) 592-2763.

“These horses have enriched ourlives so very much - they make upbest part of my day ! I look forwardto doing stalls. My husband and Ihave gotten much more out of thisadoption than even than the horseshave. We would encourage every-one to experience the joy of caringfor a retired horse simply to havethat opportunity to get to know thehorse on such a comfortable andpersonal level. We don’t ride —we’re ‘horse-petters’!” laughs Timi.

so smitten bytwo geeseand their7:30am wakeup calls fortheir morningbreakfast? Thegeese go rightup on theporch in the

CrossedThe RainbowBridge
Along with Pigcasso and Sophie,
we’d like to fondly remember
the following rescued animals
who have recently crossed the
Rainbow Bridge and are now in
greener pastures:
Rachel the Pig
Her burns that had covered nearly
85% of her back had healed up
nicely, though she succumbed to
another disease called Glassers
Disease. Rachel spent her last week
at OSU as they tried their very best
to save the little piggy.
Paisley The Horse
This beautiful Standardbred mare
had retired from an Amish farm
where she worked as a buggy horse
her entire life. Her spine had fused
and she had a host of other medical
issues. After having a stroke in her
stall at feeding time late one
evening, the vet humanely
euthanized her as we all held and
comforted her as she left this world
to experience her true retirement
home — a place of peace and
happiness.
We have also lost several chickens
who were very sweet and funny.
May all these animals now experi-
ence a world free from pain!

Sophie is a gorgeous 15 year oldbay Standardbred mare who hadbeen recently returned to our programdue to the death of her devoted ownerand our beloved friend, Diane Pajk.Sophie has been treated like a queenduring the last five years during heradoption, and we hope to find someonewho will continue to love her, ride herand spend quality time with the beauti-ful mare. Sophie has had a great dealof Pat Parelli ground training thanks toDiane, and can be ridden with just ahalter by an advanced beginner. She isgreat with kids and loves to go on trails.Due to a thick right-rear ankle, Sophiehas some suspensory/ligament issuesand needs an average-sized rider. When Happy Trails orginally purchasedSophie from a slaughterhouse auction, she arrived with a fractured hip. Thoughshe had recovered completely, herlimitations are that she cannot handleconstant work or excessive riding.

SophieTo thee, my master, I offer my prayer. Feed me, water and care for me,
and when the day’s work is done, provide me with shelter, a clean,
dry bed, and stall wide enough for me to lie down in comfort.
Always be kind to me. Your voice often means as much to me
as the reins. Pet me sometimes, that I may serve you the more gladly
and learn to love you. Do not jerk the reins, and do not whip me
when going uphill. Never strike, beat, or kick me when I do not
understand you. Watch me, and if I fail to do your bidding,
see if something is not wrong with my harness or feet.
Do not check me so that I cannot have free use of my head.
If you insist that I wear blinkers, so that I cannot see behind me
as it was intended I should, I pray you be careful that the blinders
stand well out of my eyes. Do not overload me, or hitch me
where water will drip on me. Keep me well shod.
Examine my teeth when I do not eat, I may have an ulcerated
tooth, and that, you know, is very painful. Do not tie my head
in an unnatural position, or take away my best defense
against flies and mosquitoes by cutting off my tail.
I cannot tell you when I am thirsty, so give me clean, cool water often.
Save me, by all means in your power from that fatal disease - the
glanders. I cannot tell you in words when I am sick, so watch me, that
by signs you may know my condition. Give me all possible shelter
from the hot sun, and put a blanket on me, not when I am working,
but when I am standing in the cold. Never put a frosty bit in my mouth,
first warm it by holding it a moment in your hands.
I try to carry you and your burden without a murmur, and wait patiently
for you long hours of the day or night. Without the power to choose
my shoes or path, I sometimes fall on hard pavement which I have
often prayed might not be of wood but of such a nature as to give
me safe and sure footing. Remember that I must be ready
at any moment to lose my life in your service.
And finally, OH MY MASTER, when my useful strength is gone, do not
turn me out to starve or freeze, or sell me to some cruel owner, to be
slowly tortured and starved to death, but do thou, My Master, take my life
in the kindest way, and your God will reward you here and hereafter. You
will not consider me irreverent if I ask this in the name of Him who was
born in a stable. AMEN
