Young Martin

• Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia.

• Martin’s mother was a teacher and his father was a minister.

Church

• Church was very important to Martin. He spent a lot of time at church. At church he learned that it was possible for people to get along together. He also learned that everyone should be treated fairly.

Martin Goes to School

• Martin liked school and studied hard. He listened to his teachers and did his homework. He was good at reading and speaking.

• His family sent him to a special school.

Martin Gets Married

• When Martin was 25 years old, he married Coretta Scott. They moved to Montgomery, Alabama where he got a job preaching in a small church.

Unfair Laws

• In Alabama there were many laws that were unfair. One law was that black people had to give up their seats on the bus to white bus riders. Martin and his friends wanted to change these unfair laws.

Martin Goes to Washington, D.C.

• In 1963, Martin and his friends went to Washington, D.C.. He gave a famous speech called “I Have A Dream”. His speech said that he wanted all people to be treated fairly.

• People listened to Martin’s speech and many unfair laws were changed.

Martin Wins the Nobel Peace Prize

• In 1964, Martin won the Nobel Peace Prize. This prize is given every year to the person who does the most for world peace.

• Next Monday we will stay home and celebrate Martin Luther King’s birthday. We will think about all of the things that Martin did to make the world a better place for all people.
