frequency bands

GPRS -- General Packet Radio Service

a radio technology for GSM networks Allows ability to charge by amount of data sent

rather than connect time. flexible data transmission rates typically up to 20

or 30 Kbps A 2.5G enhancement to GSM

TDMA – Time Division Multiple Access

Operated in US, Latin America, New Zealand, parts of Russia and Asia Pacific

Carriers and Devices

Each carrier has different coverage Some carriers have international coverage Some carriers have international coverage for voice

only Need to check DATA and VOICE coverage

SIM Locked – Some devices are locked to a particular carrier and therefore you cannot use SIM from another carrier.

Carriers and Devices

One vendor may not work for entire enterprise solution due to coverage or cost. May need to use multiple based on location of user base. Cingular for US, Vodaphone for England Verizon for NE USA, Sprint for Florida

Try not to be swayed by individuals wanting carriers that are used by their family. This is a business decision.

International

Some roaming partners only support voice and not data

Check roaming costs for VOICE and DATA. Data Usage is generally not high, unless using Web and downloading WYSIWYG docs

Support

Give devices to Help Desk Train them Setup special team, especially if

executive use Obtain support numbers for Carrier

They should be your primary support for the device

Negotiate support on the software too

Larger clients may be able to get “special” number

Obtain support numbers for software vendor

User Training

Who are the users? Execs Sales Management Tech Support

Give users training with some troubleshooting tips / reference card One-on-one with Execs Ask Carrier or Software

Miscellaneous

Make sure you have an QA/Test Environment – To test new versions

Small footprint of device does not allow for ease of

viewing large web pages Some websites are “WAP-

compatible” ex: http://wap.yahoo.com

Devices tend not to be able to receive or send email while on the phone – Messages queued up until off the phone

Consider Data Only

Bottom Line:The Proof is in the Pudding

Pilot the Device/Carrier/Software in small numbers Tech folks Savvy business users

Ask the carrier for more detailed coverage stats for targeted use areas – marketing maps are vague

Hit the major locations Make sure “Bug-free” Provide pilot users with a list of

questions prior to the pilot and get timely feedback after the pilot
