• “South Korean President Lee Myung-bak ranks the overseas success of K-pop among his country's top achievements, and the government operates a “Korean Wave”• BigBang, G-Dragon, 2ne1, F(x), TVXQ, Super Junior, 2pm, Boa, Beast, Infinite, Hyuna, Shinee… these are only a handful of the successful names that are shaping the K-pop industry.• The biggest advantage the Koreans had which has allowed K-pop to proliferate at lightning speed is that the movement came of age in the era of image. The Korean industry is built on TV, not radio like the American industry was.

• The radiant influence of K-pop has expanded into realms such as food and on a global scale.• Even in supermarkets, customers are turning to more Korean ingredients and accepting Kimchi as a condiment staple.• Suddenly dishes like BiBimBap and Bulgogi that were unknown 3 years ago are popping up on menus and in delis everywhere.• Food Forecasters predicted this trend, stating that Korean Food would be the next major global food trend and that kimchi was the ingredient of 2014

• From the Korean movie, the dress style was imitated and the audience become the fashion trends over the world.• The recent Concept Korea show at NYFW FW13 was packed with people: the loyal followers who have had some implication in the Korean fashion scene and newbies excited by the recent Hallyu buzz.

• South Korea is one of the most wired countries in world and most of its population is considered Early Adopters by technologists. • Since late 2007, the Hallyu phenomenon has experienced a significant shift with the growth of social media. Korea has made innovations in SNSs (e.g., Cyworld) and smartphones (e.g., Samsung’s Galaxy), as well as online gaming (e.g., Lineage and Aion), and they become major parts of the Korean Wave

Korean art is also famous thanks to Hallyu architecture as art, literature, cuisine,etc.

Korea benefits from hallyu wave

Hallyu or the Korean wave has been a blessing for Korea, its businesses, culture and country image. So tremendous has the Hallyu effect been that it has contributed 0.2% of Korea's GDP in 2004, amounting to approximately USD 2 billion.

In light of the increased popularity of Hallyu (Korean wave) and Korean culture, the report forecasted that the nation would easily achieve its targets of 20 million visitors and USD 20 billion from tourism revenues set for the year of 2020. The country has also witnessed an unprecedented rise in the number of visitors coming to Korea for medical tourism.

Lessons from hallyu for Vietnam

Vietnam needs to improve ability of media to picture the image of Vietnam to outside. Strengthening the relationship between the journalistic news coverage and the public’s news interpretations

Encouraging the development of cultural well domestic to avoid the "invaded" culture like Korea wave.

Lesson from how the Korean wave has contributed to enhancing South Korea’s national image.

Effect throughout Asia in the popularity of Korean dramas, dance music, films, animation and games and fan clubs for Korean stars

Korean dramas can help young people learn the way to overcome their trouble, the way to work in a community and become more independent.

Establishment of diplomatic relations between Korea and Vietnam

The prime minister, Nguyen Tan Dung, commented “Nowadays, many cultural products such as fashion, music and films, either coming from Korea or carrying Korean style are so popular among young people in many other places. Moreover he said “At the same time, I am very much interested in learning more about new policies such as President Lee Myung-bak’s New Asia Initiative and issues related to the Korean Peninsula with a view to contributing to peace, stability and cooperation in Northeast Asia and the Asia-Pacific region.”

Korea’s Investment in Vietnam

In 2005, Korea was the country’s fourth largest investor with $500 million, following Singapore, Taiwan and Japan.

In 2006, Korea had become the No. 1 investor in Vietnam by earning over $2.6 billion in orders.

Since 2000, LG and SK have brought electronics and telecommunications. Soon after many Korean companies like Doosan, Kumho Asiana, LG, SK and Posco entered to Vietnam.

In 2007, Samsung Electronics, Lotte Group, and Hyundai Shipbuilding entered the country.

Korean Brand

Korean brand consumer products like LG, Samsung, and Hyundai have benefited from the Korean wave.

It is easy to spot trendy people sporting hairstyles, clothes, and makeup inspired by Korean fashion in many Asian countries.

Korean food has also received new attention, as people want to sample cuisine they saw on the television shows.

Korean festivals all over the world saw attendances rise as Korean culture grew in popularity in the past years.

3. Effect to the young

Korean wave has attacked young people strongly and a lot of young Vietnamese has become crazy fan of Korean singers, actors, actresses…

The fashion trend of young Vietnamese is also influenced much by Korean wave

Young people in Vietnam are fascinated by the modern lifestyles of Korea.

The young age groups of consumers were adapting Korean lifestyles all the way from fashion, food and consumption patterns to plastic surgeries.

Young people are currently very influenced by the South Korean culture and start to adapt it by learning Korean languages, studying in Korea, and imitating Korean fashion, etc.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Korean culture and products have had significant impact on Vietnamese youth. So much so that critics are concerned that the spread of Korean popular culture could strip away the self-identity of young Vietnamese.
