Jack-0-lantern

Tradition to carve pumpkins on

Halloween has centuries-old history. There is an Irish legend about Jack-o-lantern, who several times tricked a Devil.

Once upon a time a greedy tippler Jack

offered a Devil to drink with him in a pub. When the time came to pay for the drinks, Jack asked the Devil to turn into a coin. When the devil turned into a coin, Jack quickly put it into his pocket with a silver cross. The devil was tripped and could not turn into his initial appearance. Eventually the devil was released, however he promised an Irish man one year of a carefree life. The second promise was that he would not take his soul when Jack will die.

After one year, when the Devil came with his revenge, Jack tricked him again. An Irish man asked him to climb the tree to get fruits. Trustful Satan did his request, but Jack carved a cross on the tree, so the devil was tapped again. This time Jack asked for 10 years of carefree life, however soon after he died.

After Jack’s death he was not allowed to go to the heaven or hell. He was compelled to wander around the world for all his eternity with the only one little piece of coal, which was lightening his way. While wandering around the world Jack put the spark in the empty turnip. From here came the tradition. Jack-o-lantern was created to help lost souls to find their way to a purgatory.

The Tolbooth Museum is considered to be one of the

most haunted places in Scotland. One of the oldest buildings in Aberdeen used to be the scene of pain, suffering, torture, executions and murders. The original building was founded in 1393, and then in 1616 developed as a general prison, where convinced citizens used to spend their last days on Earth.

Nowadays, when visiting the site, be ready for a frightening experience. The noises of jangling keys, footsteps and blurry shadows on the walls will chase you during the visit. The permanent tenants of the museum will not easily leave you alone.

AN Aberdeen University is standing on the ruins

of The White Dove Hotel.

This story happened when the hotel still existed. A nurse, while checking on her patient saw a little girl in white dress and a large hat sitting in a corner. The nurse looked into her face, and realised that she is looking into the ugly face of the corpse with a deep cut in the throat. The nurse was so horrified that she lost conciseness. When she woke up there was no one in the room, except for the young patient, who was no longer breathing.

According to some witnesses the ghost is still wandering around the site during the night time.

places in Aberdeen

William Wallace was a landowner and

main leader for Scottish independence. After he was caught in 1305 he was hanged, drawn and cut up. His body parts were sent to different parts of the country.

It is believed that the left hand of William Wallace is buried in the walls of St Machar Cathedral. In 1970s three schoolgirls reported seeing a long purple hand with long black nails emerging from the door of the cathedral.

The Castle Hill used to be the place of judgement and

execution of witches. The peak of the witch execution in Aberdeen was reached between 1590 and 1597.Twenty-three women and one man were excused and burned on Castle Hill. The most famous case was Janet Walker, who was accused of casting a spell on a fisherman, who after meeting her got ill for a month. Also, she was accused of killing two men, who saw her leaving a neighbours’ yard late at night.Nowadays Castle Hill still exists; it is located just behind the Hanover Street School, near Castlegate.

Hangings have always attracted a large audience, and The Gallows Hill seemed to be the most appropriate place for condemned criminals to finish their lives. From the 14th century the hill has witnessed hundreds of deaths. The last hanging took place in 1776 when Alexander Morison was executed for slewing his wife with an axe. Standing on the Gallows Hill now, is the same as standing on the huge graveyard of human bones that had been buried under the hill..

Fortune telling

Fortune telling is a ritual based on establishment of contact with

otherworldly forces for the purpose of seeing the future. It is a kind of magic, which includes the occult techniques and ceremonies allowing to learn future of simply unknown facts. Believers claim that fortune telling opens the edge of the future, however others think of it as of a national entertainment. Angelka Podniece has experienced a meeting with a fortune-teller and it changed her life.

“I met this woman on the streets. Usually I try to avoid these kind

of people, but when I was about to pass her by she stopped me and said: “ You are so unlucky!”. I was in shock, I realised that I couldn’t move. She came to me, grabbed my hand and started to speak about my life. She knew that I finished

Hairdressing College, that I was about to get married, that I left my parents in the other city. I was so surprised! Then she told me that my fiancée and me are not destined to be together, and if I marry him I will never be happy. She told me that I need to change profession, and that I can became a really successful lawyer. It was a strange feeling, but I was sure that she is not lying. It is true that I had problems with my fiancée, and I was struggling to decide if I should marry him or not. I think it was a turning point in my life. I gave her few coins and went to work. I was thinking about her perditions for a really long time, but eventually I decided that I do not want to marry that guy. Moreover I applied to Law School and now I am on my second year. I really enjoy it. I never thought that I can be a lawyer. I am grateful to that woman. She changed my life.”

Na,me: The exorcistyear: 1973Director: william friedkin

Plot

the MOVIE IS BASED ON A TRUE STORY.A 12-year-old daughter of a famous actress starts to behave inadequately. The doctors are sure it is a mental disorder. Specially invited priest/exorcist suspects that the girl is possessed with the Devil.

review:

Ksenia romanenko comments:

“The movie is recognised as one of the scariest horror movies in history of cinematography, and I agree with this opinion.

It is a bright example of how in the early seventies, without having powerful modern special effects it succeeded to create an original picture. The ominous and disturbing atmosphere forces to watch the picture until the last second.

I can’t even imagine how strongly this tape could frighten the audience in the seventies. Probably, then it was really awful. Now … Yes, it, undoubtedly, keeps in suspense. Personally I, had no deadly horror. But there was a concern, alarm, a nervous tension and painful expectation: “well further?”. Unfortunately, modern horror films can’t brag of such an atmosphere.

I recommend to all fans of horrors and mysticism.”
