BASIC INFORMATION:Capital: BudapestLanguage: Hungarian (Magyar)Population: about 10 million peopleCurrency: Hungarian Forint 4. MagyarorszgHungary is one of the most popular touristdestinations in the world, with a capital regarded asone of the most beautiful in the world. 5. FOREIGN LANGUAGES:Most youth in Hungary speak English. German also may behelpful: it is almost as widely spoken as English, and almostuniversally so near the Austrian border. In these areas and witholder people in general, German will most often take you a lotfurther than English.A minority of Hungarians speak Russian, although mostHungarians are quite happy to forget it so try it only as a lastresort.Basically, in Hungary, you will have a much better chancefinding someone speaking a foreign language (mostly Englishand German) in larger cities. In rural areas the chance is verylow, in some cases even with young people.Hungarianlesson 6. Members of the Gypsy community may find the traditionalHungarian label 'Cigny' slightly offensive, preferring to be labeledas Roma. Avoid mocking Hungarian history and Hungarian patriotism. Even if you meet someone of the opposite sex for the first time, it'snot unusual to kiss each other on the cheeks instead of shakinghands as a greeting. 8. They pridethemselves on using proper etiquette in all situations andexpect others to do the same.At meetings both men and women greet by shaking hands, although a man should usually wait for the women to extendher hand.
