What Does This Mean For Us As Educators?

“The art of teaching is the art of assisting discovery.” -Mark Van Doren

Page 5: Group 1 web quest project

Advantages Constructivism

Effective for the tactile/Kinesthetic learners– Student excitement and interest.

Uses scaffolding Elimination of a standardized curriculum– Flexible

Promotes teamwork and cooperation Students understand information, don’t just

recite it backPromotes higher level thinking skills

Page 6: Group 1 web quest project

Disadvantages of Constructivism

Teachers cannot customize curriculum to every single student

Impossible to compare student progress– Difficult to grade/evaluate

Teacher training During initial stages students may experience

confusion or frustration Classroom Management Math/Science

– rules, formulas, and procedures

TOPIC: PARTS OF PLANTS

5E Lesson

Page 8: Group 1 web quest project

Objectives

At the end of the lesson, pupils will: be able to name the parts of a plant. label the parts of a plant on a diagram. identify the job of each part of a plant. plant a seed and observe the growth over a period of

two weeks.

Page 9: Group 1 web quest project

Engage

• Concepts:– Plants have parts.– Each part of the plant has a different role.– Plants begin as a seed, turn into a seedling, then a

plant.

• Teacher brings in a real live plant. Teacher ask pupils:– What are the parts of a plant?– Why is each part important?– What do they think each part does?

Page 10: Group 1 web quest project

Explore

In groups, pupils will plant the seeds. Before planting the seed students will

receive: a cup labeled with name of the student. soil to fill the cup. a small watering can to provide water to the plant.

Page 11: Group 1 web quest project

Explain

• Concepts:– Seeds needs air, water and warmth.– Plants need air, water, sunlight and nutrients in order to

live and thrive.

• Students identify what the seeds will need to grow into an adult plant.

• Students identify the parts of a plant. • Students label the parts of a plant on the

Smart Board.• Students identify the role of each part of a

plant.

Page 12: Group 1 web quest project

Expand

• Teacher asks pupils:– What happens if a plant is pulled out of the ground

and doesn’t have any roots left?– If a flower pot is always left in one place the flowers

will eventually lean in one direction. Why does this happen? (The job of the stem is to hold the leaves to the light so the plant will lean toward the sun)

– What happens if there are no bees left to carry the pollen from one flower to another?

Page 13: Group 1 web quest project

Evaluate

• Multiple Choice Test When Plants are Grown• Anecdotal Records • Over the weeks, pupils will:– record when the plant was watered.– measure the height of the plant as it grows.– keep a journal to draw the plant during each stage.– Review roles of each plant part by creating a diagram

on the Smart Board.
