Materials EN2 Partially Direct answer: British Land encourages the use of recycled content in our

developments through our policies and promotion of industry best practice. For

example, BREEAM green building certifications award credits for use of recycled

content. As buildings are complex to construct and we outsource development activity

to external architects, project managers and contractors, we do not find it relevant to

weigh all materials purchased. The primary materials we use by weight are concrete,

steel and glass, for which the UK industry average recycled content is 30%, 60% and

10%, respectively. On our largest development project, 5 Broadgate, the external team

tracked recycled content using a UK industry standard WRAP Recycled Content

tracker. The building is calculated to comprise 38.64% recycled content by value.

As we are unable to report the proportion of recycled materials across our whole

developments programme, we have designated this indicator as ‘partially’ reported.

Fully WEB / Sustainability

- Strategy: Skills and Opportunity; Materiality

Supplementary direct answer: This year, we updated our responsible supply chain

management risk assessment for all areas of our business, enabling us to identify

spend categories with key risks regarding labour issues.

- HR4: Freedom of association issues were included in the ‘Labour practices and

fair pay’ category. In our managed portfolio, the spend categories ‘security’,

‘cleaning’ and 'marketing and promotions' were again assessed as Red risk. We

also added ‘landscaping’ to Red risk, as incidents of forced labour in the UK

landscaping sector have been reported in the media. In our development portfolio,

several categories were identified as Amber risk. We now require stonework (an

identified risk area) from outside the EU to undergo thorough checks on labour

conditions at point of extraction and manufacture.

- HR5: No significant child labour risk was identified for our operations and tier 1

and 2 supply chain. Whilst building materials, uniforms and personal protective

equipment manufactured outside the EU have some child labour risk, we consider

the risk to be low for our supply chain, given the type and quantity of materials

likely to be procured outside the EU. One exception is stone from low-cost

markets. As a result, in our Materials Schedule we require the traceability of stone

and encourage the use of responsible sourcing standard BES6001, wherever

practical. This is built into our Sustainability Brief for Developments and Employer

Requirements (our contractual agreement with suppliers).

- HR6: The highest risk for forced or compulsory labour is considered to be in our

managed portfolio within the spend areas of ‘security’, ‘cleaning’, ‘marketing &

promotions’ and ‘landscaping’, which are typified by low wages, low skills and

significant numbers of employees.

In addition, this year we:

- Continued to roll out our Supply Chain Charter, which sets out our required

standards and actions. Our 2020 sustainability objectives include all tier 1

contracts being Supply Chain Charter compliant.

- Delivered training to key employees and selected external project managers

across our development portfolio.

- Introduced quarterly reporting on the number of new Red risk contracts across our

managed and developments portfolios. We also confirm that the supplier has

addressed these issues through our contracting process.
