Introduction

This portfolio was compiled over the course of a Spring Semester at Santa Barbara City College where I partic-ipated in Victoria Torf’s Media Design Class. It was a 16-week on-line course covering a breadth of graphic design problems to solve.

With each exercise I worked the problem out on pa-per, in a sketch book, and presented it to an on-line forum of fellow students, a teacher’s assistant and the Instructor. Within the forum we discussed and pre-sented a variety of complex design issues.

For the final portfolio, 12” x 12”, I chose to bind my work in the spirit of a flower press. The cover is a velum print of pressed flowers that allow the cover page to show through. Each page is separated by wax paper, like one would do when pressing flowers. The binding is similar to the press, as I used wing nut bolts. The same bolts most often used to tighten a flower press. I think it best represents who I am as an artist, with a strong reverence for nature, natural forms, and an approach grounded in preservation of the arts.

As an artist, pushing my way into the world of graphic design, I found that I needed to spend time reflecting on how to solve problems in a new way. I worked not so much from an inner personal perspective as with my art, processing thoughts and emotions, thinking about the message last. In this class I worked from the perspective of “best design” by striving to create pieces that most clearly conveyed a message for an audience, a message with ideas, composition, color, and occasionally text.

Draw DigitallyLearning to draw digitally I experi-mented with the Scribbler tool at ze-frank.com/scribbler. Here are samples of my scribbles for the words “joy” and “radiant”. I ended up going with “radiant”.

I created the final piece by visiting scribbler twice, once to draw the flower and again for the text. I used Photoshop to create a cohesive com-

Digital PaintingHere I worked to create a painting using a variety of color palates. It was great to experiment with color. I had a lot of fun using Kuler.com to create palates.

Telling a Story with LineI had a lot of fun with this assignment. At first I had a hard time setting forth in one direction. I thought telling a story with yarn following my daughter throughout her day was where I wanted to go. But what evolved was the story of the evolution of a piece of yarn as it created a pair of gloves.

Creating TextureFor this assignment I created a sampling of both digital textures and hand drawn samples.I decided I would create my digi-tal sample textures using ordinary household items. I just started snap-ping photos of anything, from my couch, to a house plant. The possibili-ties seemed endless. In the end it was hard to narrow down my selections to sixteen textures.

For the hand drawn textures I wanted to stick with the household items theme I had developed in the digital samples, so I cut out sixteen 3” X 3” squares and walked around the house rubbing them on things. For ex-ample, I used a coconut scrapper I bought in Bali to create a pattern of holes in the paper. I burned a page on the stove. And I ripped out a page of my sketch book and rubbed water on the page. I tore it, ripped it and cut it down to size.

In the end I think both methods pro-duced equally interesting images for the final collage.

Color PosterI had two ideas for my posters. The first was to take a word that was meaningful and elaborate on it.

In the end I chose my favorite famous person, Nelson Man-dela. I truly admire him and think of him as an inspiration of peace, compassion, integrity and forgiveness. I then went to the Internet and created the above tricolor im-age on obamicon.me. The Obama posters were the first thing that came to mind when creating a poster with a word.

I liked the effect of one word on the Obama posters. But realized after feedback in the class forum, that it wasn’t really working to hang one word in the top left corner of the frame, especially on the triad color scheme. So I went ahead and tried to integrate “Inspira-tion” into the background of the image, like wallpaper. I like how it repeats, like a mantra, or like the many people that he inspires. That’s also why I changed the word from “integrity” to “inspiration”.

Click on the small icon to the left of the

word “none” and select a color library.

You can also select “none” and begin

choosing in the color editor.

Here I chose to open the “Food” library

and selected “vegetables”, and clicked

“OK”.

After expanding your photo, select it. If it’s not selected you will not have access to the “Edit Colors” menu.

You will know your photo is selected when all of the points are revealed as in the example below.

With your entire photo selected, go to “Edit” and select “Edit Colors”, “Recolor with Preset” and then

“color library”.

Here you can edit the colors by clicking and dragging colors from the left side column over to the

color bars on the right column, as indicated with the blue arrow. To edit the brightness of the

colors you have two options. Random editing is found in the icon circled below. It’s next to the

button for changing colors randomly. To make deliberate edits in color select “Edit” circled in

blue. The window shown at the bottom of this page is what will open.

Here you can edit the colors by dragging the circles around. To edit the brightness you can slide

the arrow, circled in blue, to the left or right.

Here are four different recolored photos using the same “vegetable” color palate.

When you are done playing around with the color effects you can like click “OK”. As

you will see with many of the changes you make, there is no “undo”; so my advice

when you are starting out is to have fun and not get too attached to the outcome of

your piece. Practice will help in every way!

To begin you will “Paste” or

“Place” a photo into your

Illustrator document. With

any photo you bring into Illus-

trator you will be given an op-

tion to perform a “Live Trace”

of the photo. For this exer-

cise you will perform a “Live

Trace” by clicking the circled

button only AFTER choosing

the “Photo High Fidelity” op-

tion in the drop down menu to

the right of the “Live Trace”

button.

Note, you can choose “Photo

Low Fidelity” to get a differ-

ent effect.

Here is the “traced” photo next to the original .jpg.

This was one of the hardest assignments I tackled. I used the two let-ters “S” & “A”. The figure and the ground of the letters developed their own composition to create a logo for my business, Synergy Arts. Here you can see my sketches and digital ideas. In the end I chose a design that could be interpreted as either a leaf or a paint brush.

Real to AbstractWith this project I examined 3 print advertisements and sketched, by hand an abstract interpretation of the composition. I chose one final abstract composition and played with it using a variety of techniques.

MetamorphosisDuring a time when I am also taking a Flash class it was a little chal-lenging for me to come up with a concept about metamorphosis that contains static images. With help from the forum I was able to cre-ate a cohesive piece about a worm and a tomato.
