President’s Report By Ray Lamoureux #9

The board had a meeting to discuss issues with the reserves and how they are

managed. The board formed a committee to look into the money and make

recommendations on the scheduling of reserve money. If anyone in the park has any

experience with reserve could come to the office and give your name to Karin to give

the committee some guidance on this subject.

We have had a couple of problems this winter with guests bringing their

animals into the park. Golden Acres has a no pet policy and that means no guests can

bring their pets also. If you have guests it is up to the owner to make sure the rules are

followed.

At the board meeting the audit we had completed on 2017 financials was

discussed. The state law for H.O.A.s was changed from audits required every three

years to five years. The board and the residents in attendance agreed to keep the audits at three year intervals.

The problems with the clubhouse generator surface when hurricane Irma came thru last year. The

generator was not large enough to carry the electrical load we need in the building. It was voted on purchasing a

new larger generator and have it completed before hurricane season.

We still have units with hurricane damage that have received a second letter. We also sent out inspection

letters. If you have received either letter please come to the office and inform the board when the violations will

be completed.

The snowbirds will start heading home next month and it is time to start thinking about securing all the

loose items around your unit before you leave. We don’t want that material flying around if another storm hits.

The clubhouse floor will be cleaned on April 8th and help will be needed to remove all tables and chairs

so they can clean. We need help to return the tables and chairs back on Sunday the 9th.

From the Editor’s Desk By Sue Bailey #188 [email protected]

Happy Easter!!

Well spring is finally here, although here at Golden Acres we fared pretty

well during the winter as far as climate is concerned.

We at Golden Acres have had a very busy month in March as you will

see in the many articles reported for this month. Some of the activities will occur

toward the end of March but after the publishing of this newsletter, so they will

be reported in next month’s newsletter (such as Progressive Cards, St. Patrick’s

Dance, the Golf League Banquet, the Shuffle Banquet, our Board Picnic, and the

Spring/Fling Dinner/Dance). So stay posted for some fun and exciting events

coming up.

This is a bitter-sweet time when many of you will be heading back to the north and saying goodbye to

all your fellow residents until fall comes again. Hopefully the spring thaw of all that snow is pretty much over

by the time you get there. If you are traveling this month, I wish you a safe journey to get to your destination.

As April approaches, here are some notable events to remember:

Easter is on April 1st. Ironically it is also April Fools’ Day. "Did you find all the Easter Eggs that I hid?" "April

Fools, I didn't hide any." April 17th is the deadline for income taxes here in the United States, but you

Canadians have a couple more weeks since your taxes are due on April 30th.

Until next time,

May God bless and keep you well and safe…

Greetings from the Office By Karin Desmone #1

Please welcome Susanna Glass Unit #157 and David Watson, Unit #130 to the neighborhood.

Congratulations and may you find much happiness at your new full time residence.

2018-2019 phone directories are at the printers now. Looking to have them printed and returned to me

the beginning of April. I will deliver one directory to every resident currently in the park. Those not in the

park, I will mail a directory to your away address.

Just a reminder that if you received a letter from PMI regarding the recent inspection and items that

required your attention. Please update the office with the status of those items checked. A date that the items

will be completed and/or a date that the items were corrected. Reminder letters will continue to be mailed from

PMI if you don’t let the office know the status.

Golden Acres Dart League By Wayne & Moya Bettridge #147

Editor's Note: This article was published in the Monthly Media copy of the March Newsletter, but was

inadvertently omitted from the eNewsletter, so I am including it in the April eNewsletter.

The Golden Acres Dart League opened on February 9, 2018 with 25 players in attendance. The feedback

received confirmed everyone had a great time and are looking forward to future Friday evenings.

We would like to thank those who have helped get this up and running. First of all, thanks to the Board

of Directors and the Recreation Committee for their support and encouragement in getting this activity started.

Thanks to our board liaison Steve Swann and recreation chair, Ron Short who communicated the

concerns and suggestions of both the board and recreation committee so that we could resolve placement,

storage and safety issues.

Thanks to:

Frank St. Peter for researching building suppliers.

Bill Erickson for the delivery of materials

Bob Mickle for making signup sheets, posters & score sheets

Mark Johnson & Ron Short for construction

Gil Callingham & Doug Templeton for each donating a dart board.

Because of the collective efforts of many we now have another activity available for all to enjoy. Here’s

to many laughs, good natured competition and of course Bulls eyes in the future!

Recreation Report By Ron Short, Chairperson #44

Our Can/Am Event last month was again a great success with many thanks going out to all Volunteers,

Actors and especially to Lynn Perron who again worked all summer on this and produced excellent results.

From all of us in Golden Acres, thanks a million Lynn.

Our “50” Anniversary Celebrations were enjoyed by five lovely “Brides and Grooms” who all looked

“Dashing Beautiful” in their dresses and suits. A big thank you goes out to the committee of Theresa Quinn,

Marilyn Cushman, Moya Bettridge and all the many Volunteers. It was professionally organized and enjoyed by

the capacity crowd in our Clubhouse.

Our Penny, Bake, Jewelry Sale was a “FANTASTIC’’ success with this year having sold the most

tickets ever. Thanks to Mary and Rita who ran the penny table and all the many Volunteers who helped out with

the jewelry and bake table and the volunteers in the kitchen. If it wasn’t for volunteers, there would be no

recreation or other activities in our beautiful park.

Our St. Patrick Dance was a “Green” blast with host Steve Swan and Larry and all the volunteers who

did a fantastic job. We had approximately seventy-five residents in attendance and everyone seemed to enjoy

themselves dancing to the tunes Of ‘’ Bittersweet.’’

As this is my last report as your Recreation Chairman, I would like to personally thank all committee

members who assisted me over the last four years and to all the many many volunteers who have helped to

make recreation what it is today.

We brought in many new events that have been enjoyed by many residents and this was only

accomplished by a lot of communication, co-operation and hard work.

Many thanks go out to the Board(s) who has been very co-operative over the years with recreation in

setting up the different activities.

It is with a tear in my eye that I am stepping down but I am confident that your new committee will

produce excellent results.

They are—Mark Johnson, Steve Toner, Barb Pylinski, Lin Johnson, Sue Toner, Maureen Shannon, and

Sue Bailey.

To one and all, thank you very much for all the help over the years, please have a very safe and healthy

summer and we will see one another come fall or early in the New Year.

TAKE CARE AS WE CARE

Progressive Cards By Gerald & Eleanor Sanders #76

Saturday, February 17, 2018

The evening was spent with 56 wonderful residents. This is the largest crowd so far this season. Thank

you all for coming out. I can tell from faces and noise level that everyone was having a great time.

High score to Marie Gengarelli

Door prize to Gerry Janes

Bonus prizes to Jim Hatfield and Kathleen (visitor)

Progressive cards is an evening of getting to know your neighbours. You soon know which residents are

having the most fun (right Margaret??). Gerald and I do enjoy making the evening as much about fun as it is

about playing cards.

I encourage everyone to come out to our final progressive cards in March.

CAN AM By Lynn Perron #190

Pictures by Jerry Janes #59

On March 1st our community came together for our Can Am evening. A celebration of the special

relationship we share as countries and friends here in Golden Acres.

Mary Lou Web and her decorating crew did a wonderful job of decorating the club house representing

both countries. Cheryl Taylor and her helpers efficiently managed the dinner, hostesses. tickets and tables.

Everyone sat down to a delicious meal of ham supplied by the recreation committee and other dishes provided

by those at each table. Tables were put away and chairs set up for the show.

The theme this year was Golden Acres Celebrates the Seasons.

Our much loved Emcee Bob Sheire and his assistant Dave

Merriam lead us through the show.

Starting with Winter, our Can Am Singers, Lynne Mickle, Jim Schmitt, Carol Spinney, Cheryl Taylor, Lorne

Taylor and Rennie Wittenbols lead us into the season with the song "Winter Wonderland". Next we celebrated

Christmas with the song "Mele Kalikimaka", Hawaiian for Merry Christmas.

Steve Swann as Bing Crosby and Barb Pylinski as an Andrew Sister were joined by lovely hula dancers Gary

Collins, Ed Richtmyer and Gord Spafford.

Then we had a friendly hockey game United Stated verses Canada to the song "The Good Old Hockey Game"

by Stompin Tom Connors. Players Mark Johnson, Keith Pylinski, Doug Templeton and Al Woodlock, with

Referee Bev Collins trying to control them, stick handled their way through the song. Fans Janice Garvey,

Leigh Herington, Charlie Nadjiwon, Paul Shannon, Nadine Templeton and Don Webb urged them on as they

all joined in on the chorus.

This was followed by the Can Am Dancers Sheona Ayles, Lin Johnson, Belinda Sezbenski, Connie Woodlock

and Lynn Perron, accompanied by Howard Farris on guitar dancing to "Shoveling Sunshine". We are all happy

to be shoveling sunshine here in Golden Acres and not the white stuff up north.

Next season.....Spring. Rennie Wittenbols entered the stage

alone singing Al Jolsen's song "Nothing Could be finer than

to be in Carolina" only to be stopped by Lynn Perron

reminding him he was supposed to be singing "April

Showers", which he then sang, unaccompanied. All planned

in good fun.

Next was the springtime song "Red, Red Robin". Our own Red Robin, Joan Muir, delighted the audience as she

bob, bob, bobbed out from behind the curtain, and was joined by the Can Am singers. Then we celebrated

Easter with the Red Hat Ladies. Cathy Eckland, Marie Gengarelli, Rita Syroteuk, Marilyn McKay and Paula

Bunevith presented a fashion show of their hats to the song "In Your Easter Bonnet". Next was a spring training

ballgame. Players Gary Collins, Bob Eckland, Gord Spafford and Ron Tasior with fans Georgina Lamoureux,

Jean Morin, Ed Morin, Maureen Shannon, Glenda Spafford and Gail Tasior sang along to the song "Take me

out to the Ballgame".

We ended the season of Spring with the

Can Am Dancers celebrating St. Patrick's

Day with an Irish Jig.

11

We entered into Summer with the Can Am Singers singing "Summertime and the Living is Easy". Then we had

a BBQ celebrating the 1st of July for Canadians and the 4th of July for Americans. Paula and Joe Bunevith,

Marie and Grant Nieszyewski, Eleanor and Gerry Saunders and Connie and Al Woodlock shared a grill to the

song "This Land is Your Land this Land is my Land". American and Canadian versions sung by Jim Schmitt,

Carol Spinney and Cheryl and Lorne Taylor.

Next Jackie and Denny Cunningham were at summer camp

Grenada. They performed their hilarious version of the song

"Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah".

The Can Am Dancers closed the summer season dancing to Alan Jackson's "Summertime Blues".

12

Our final season Fall, opened with the song "Shine on Harvest Moon", sung by our Can Am singers.

Next we celebrated Oktoberfest. Dancing and singing to the song "Beer Barrel Polka" were Sheona and John

Ayles, Gil and Gail Callingham, Lin and Mark Johnson and Barb and Keith Pylinski.

We can't think of Fall without thinking about turkey. Celebrating Thanksgiving, a group of friends, Paula and

Joe Bunevith, Eleanor and Gerry Saunders, Barb and Keith Pylinski and Cheryl and Lorne Taylor, gather and

celebrate with a square dance to the song "Turkey in the Straw".

13

Finally we celebrated Halloween with the song "The Monster Mash". Our Mad

Scientist, Gil Callingham was amazing.

Joining the party were the Can Am back up Dancers, the Werewolf Jack Bailey and Dracula with his son, Mark

Johnson and Bev Collins.

Page 14: Golden Acres R. O. Association, Inc. 2018-201930 pm Dominos Fri: April 6th, 13th, 20th, ... recommendations on the scheduling of ... concerns and suggestions of both the board and

14

We closed the show with our signature Finale number "A New Attitude" featuring the entire cast. With a few

glitches that just added to the fun we asked the audience to join us in the song "You've got a Friend which has

the words Winter, Spring Summer and Fall, all you have to do is call and I'll be there, You've got a friend"

celebrating the many friendships we have made here in Golden Acres.

By all accounts the evening was a great success. Thank you to everyone involved. We are so fortunate to be in

this wonderful community of Golden Acres.

Editor's Note: Great Job Lynn and Cast. Loved the show! A special thank you to Jerry Janes for providing the

pictures for our newsletter.

Rec Committee Selects New Members By Mark Johnson #174

With a great deal of enthusiasm, 3 park residents have agreed to fill the vacancies on the Golden Acres

Rec Committee. Mark Johnson, Steve Toner, and Lin Johnson have committed to serve as Chairperson, Vice

Chairperson, and Treasurer, respectively. All 3 volunteers were voted into their new positions during a special

Rec Committee meeting held on February 28th.

Departing committee members include Chairperson Ron Short, Vice Chairperson Cheryl Taylor, and

Treasurer Bob Mickle. Their contributions to the Golden Acres Rec Committee will surely be missed. We thank

them for their efforts, commitment of time and energy, and dedication in helping to make the Rec Committee a

success. To ensure a smooth transition, they have offered to support the efforts of the incoming members, with

their knowledge and expertise of committee functions and scheduling. We all extend them a sincere thank you

and are grateful for their leadership.

The Rec Committee will continue to be served by Barb Pylinski - Secretary, as well as, Sub Committee

members Sue Toner - Kitchen, Maureen Shannon - Bingo, and Sue Bailey - Newsletter. In addition, board

member Steve Swann will serve as liaison for the Rec Committee.

The new committee looks forward to building on the successes of the past, with the goal of producing a

positive and fun environment that will encourage participation for every resident of our wonderful park.

Shuffling Report By Ron Short #44

Here we are at another closing of a great shuffling year. Congratulations go out to Bill Battersby

(Peacock) who finished the season as top shuffler. Twelve out of nineteen players ended the season with a

higher average than the previous year. (CONGRATULATIONS)

Our year end Banquet at the Olive Garden was attended by approximately thirty- five people and Donna

Delf won the trophy for the most improved shuffler.

Many Thanks go out to Charlie Nadjiwon (Captain) and to Eugene Binette (Assistant Caption) for all

their hard work in keeping the courts in good shape.

Remember folks. Shuffling is a great way to relax, meet new people and have a great time. Everyone in

our park is more than welcome to come out and shuffle.

TILL NEXT TIME – ENJOY YOUR SUMMER AND HOPE TO SEE YOU ON THE COURTS.

Paddle Club By Gil Callingham #159 & Lorne Taylor #136

The Paddle Club members have been very active this season.

Club members have been exploring the various parks, bayous, rivers, and beaches in our area. Some have

paddled around Honeymoon Island out into the Gulf, others have explored Caladesi Island and others have gone

on the various rivers.

The clubs organized activities:

Jan. 15th A paddler rental and general information session was presented by

Lindsay of Sandy Feet Mobile Kayak Rentals. Lindsay provided us

with information on the areas, kayak handling and rentals.

She ran an introduction and paddling course and those who attended

said they enjoyed it.

Jan. 24th Craig Park Spring Bayou, Tarpon Springs and Molly Goodhead’s restaurant.

The weather was cooler but sunny and we were treated by a visit from a

group of Manatees feeding in the warmer waters of the Bayou. A turtle

joined in on the fun and swam under one of the kayaks. (Gilles) We then

paddled to the channel and into the dock area of Tarpon Springs.

After a good day paddling we met at Molly Goodhead’s restaurant for

food, refreshments and fun. A great outing.

16

Jan. 31st Pop Stansell Park, Palm Harbor. A good place to launch and parking is free.

The paddling in the bay and out to the islands is very enjoyable.

Feb. 9th Anderson Park, Tarpon Springs to enjoy Lake Tarpon.

Twenty-two paddlers explored part of Lake Tarpon and then had lunch at

the Tarpon Turtle restaurant. Everyone enjoyed the time on the lake and

agreed that this destination should be on the list for a return visit. The

food and fellowship was outstanding and the weather also cooperated.

Thanks to Lorne and Mark for their organization of the event ,and helping

everyone with the docking at the restaurant.

Feb. 15th Weeki Wachee River

Margaret and Richard Cooper ran a trip to this river with its crystal clear

water. They organized and provided all the information needed including

the rental telephone numbers.

The paddlers who attended stated that the cruise was a trip to remember.

It is an area you can go to again and again and enjoy it every time.

Feb. 23rd Rear Admiral’s Paddle. Robert K. Reese Memorial Park.

Again Lorne put together a great paddle. The paddlers who I contacted

said they had a good paddle with lots to see. The tides played their

tricks and brought the bottom quite close to the kayaks, but no one ran

aground. A good day.

We hope to make the Rear Admiral’s Paddle an annual event.

17

Come join us on our next cruise. Watch for the announcement on the Notice Board in the Clubhouse,

and of course listen for the announcement at coffee on Wednesday.

We have April to get in some more paddling, so let's get those paddles wet.

My thanks to Lorne and Cheryl Taylor, without them we would not have had the cruises.

They organized, contacted Lindsay, and ran the cruises while I was house bound with that cold thing.

Lorne thanks, I could not ask for a better Rear Admiral.
