The Gold Coast Rapid Transit project is currently delivering Stage One of a world class light rail system for one of Australia’s fastest growing cities – the Gold Coast.
Stage One is the priority route from Griffith University (Parklands Drive, Southport) to Broadbeach. This 13 kilometre dedicated light rail corridor will service the new Gold Coast University Hospital, Griffith University, Southport medical precinct and the fast growing commercial, retail and recreational centres of Southport, Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach.
From late 2010, early construction works will be taking place as part of the Gold Coast Rapid Transit project, as we prepare the city for the introduction of the light rail system.
Managing construction and working with the communityThe Gold Coast Rapid Transit project team is committed to minimising
the construction impacts on the community.
Some works may occur at night to reduce the impact to peak traffic flows.
When night works are planned, noise will be kept to a minimum, lights
will be managed appropriately and the community will be informed of the
works in advance.
Some of the ways that noise will be managed during night works include:

Where are the Broadbeach roadworks? The Broadbeach roadworks package will occur along the Gold Coast Highway between Thornton Street and Australia Avenue as shown in blue on the above map.

Why do we need roadworks? Before the light rail can be built, the roads it will travel on have to be widened and levelled. All the services located under the road — such as the gas, water and telecommunications — also have to be moved to a more accessible location to allow for future repairs and upgrades. Once all of this is complete, the area will be prepared for the construction team to build tracks, stations, bridges and intersection upgrades to support the light rail operation.
Some of the activities you may see around these areas are: • surveywork• roadwideningandintersectionupgrades• relocationofpublicutilitiessuchascommunications, power,
water, gas and sewage services• landscaping, concretingandpaving.
IntersectionsSome traffic modifications will be needed to accommodate the light rail. Works may include re-marking lanes, road levelling and installing new signalling. There will be traffic management in place whilst works take place.
ParkingAs part of the Broadbeach roadworks, there will be changes to the traffic conditions and the progressive removal of on-street parking along the Gold Coast Highway between the intersections of Thornton Street and Australia Avenue. Changes to parking in this area will be permanent. Property and emergency access will be maintained throughout the early works program.Surfers ParadiseArtist impression of light rail in Surfers Paradise Boulevard, Surfers Paradise

How will traffic be impacted?Along the Gold Coast Highway, two lanes of traffic will be maintained for the majority of the time during the works. However, certain construction activities may require the closure of one lane in each direction during off-peak times and reduced speed limits will be applied. Changes to traffic conditions will be communicated to motorists via signage, print and radio advertising, website updates and email notifications.
