Page 2: Globalization

• Taiwan along with Penghu, Kinmen, Matsu, and other small Islands are known as the Republic of China, or the ROC.

Page 3: Globalization

• While some people think they should remain the ROC…

• Others think they would be better off by becoming unified with the People’s Republic of China, or PRC which is mostly made up of mainland China.

Page 4: Globalization

• Then again there is always the option of declaring Independence and becoming the Republic of Taiwan.

Page 5: Globalization

• Since the ROC lost its United Nations seat in 1971, and was replaced by the PRC, Most states now recognize the PRC as the sole representative of China.

Page 6: Globalization

• In 2005 the PRC passed the Anti-Succession Law.• It was basically way of saying we will use non-peaceful

means in the event that you try to declare Taiwan's Independence.

Page 7: Globalization

• It is Interpreted that this criteria opens up the scenario of Taiwan developing Weapons of Mass Destruction.

• The ROC denies any such accusations.• And there is no evidence to show that they posses any

Chemical or Nuclear Weapons…• On the other hand there is evidence to support that the PRC

does hold Chemical and Nuclear Weapons of Mass destruction.

Page 8: Globalization

•The possibility of war in such a close proximity makes ROC/PRC disagreement one of the most closely watched focal points in the Pacific.

Page 9: Globalization

• Both sides have chosen to build a strong naval presence.

• While the ROC is more defensive by buying frigates and missile destroyers…

• The PRC is more on the offense by buying long-range cruise missiles and supersonic surface-to-surface missiles…

Page 10: Globalization

• Despite long-standing political differences, trade between China and Taiwan is growing and there are signs of increased cooperation.

Page 11: Globalization

• The two countries will soon begin nonstop chartered passenger flights between the countries, which some believe will lead to a resumption of normal transport links.

Page 12: Globalization

• China and Taiwan trade has grown substantially in recent years…

• Taiwan is in one of China’s top trade partners, and Taiwanese manufacturers have already invested $100 billion in China.
