• Chittaranjan Tembhekar | TNNMumbai: Although currently facing a shortfall of around 3,700 MW, developments and promises in Maharashtras power sector show that by fiscal year 2013-2014, the state may have an additional 11,500 MW, which is its present generation capacity.This would mean even after considering an increase in demand, by 2014, the state would have 5,000 MW surplus power, a status Maharashtra enjoyed 25 years ago.If things move as planned, the cost of power for the consumers in Maharashtra will go down considerably and load-shedding will be history by 2012.Recently, Maharashtra State Power Generation Company Ltd (Mahagenco) added 250 MW to the states power supply from its Ghatghar power plant besides the Centres allocation of 900 MW from Dabhol. Tata power added 250 MW, while Khalgaon and Sipat from the central power sector added around 120 MW, bringing down the power deficit in the state from 4,700 MW to 3,700 MW during peak hours.By the end of fiscal year 2009-10, the state is likely to get another 1,629 MW from Parli and Paras units. In 2010-2011, the state has envisaged an addition of 2,070 MW from Khaparkheda, Bhusawal, Sipat and Barh plants, besides 300 MW from Jindal South West Ltds upcoming Jaigad power plant in Konkan.According to Mahagenco sources, 3,943 MW is expected by 2011-2012 through the states expansion programme in Chandrapur, Parli and Uran. The Centres North Kanapura and other units are likely to contribute 353 MW by 2012 and another 1,160 MW is expected from companies like Adani and Lanco. By the end of 2012-2013, Bhusawal and Paras expansion will add up to 400 MW besides 1,480 MW from Mauda and Vindhyanchal units. Adani and Lanco Power promise to add 1,340 MW. On Friday, the Pagaria Group announced to set up a 1,000-MW plant in the state within the next five years.
