Dates to Remember Dear parents, ‘Brrrrrrr…it’s cold’. This week has been quite cold, but the weather forecasters tell us that next week could be our coldest time in a long, long while. Could I ask that parents remind students to wear their winter uniform. Also, the school playground can be quite cold in the morning. Students are not supposed to play until the 8.30 bell rings and a teacher is on duty, so all students should not arrive until 8.30am and where for some reason they do arrive before then, they are to sit on the steps outside the library. Uniforms – The great majority of our students do wear school uniform. A reminder that the P&C Uniform Shop does have second hand uniforms available at a cost of $2 per item. Reports – I am currently reading report drafts. I am very proud to announce that the teachers have written extremely supportive, honest and comprehensive reports. They will be sent home with work samples very soon. I would like to ask all parents to please take advantage of the opportunity to support your child by booking and attending a three way interview with your child’s teacher. Last year we had an attendance rate of 87% and we would like to improve on this figure. Student-Learning Conferences – bookings are now open – the code for bookings is bsew2. So far, bookings have only been made for about 40% of our students. Popular times are filling quickly so if you haven’t yet made a booking you are advised to do so as soon as possible. If you need assistance, please contact the school. Have a good week, Doug Meaney Principal Fri, June 15 Last day for any camp monies. Please contact Office if you can’t finalise your payments. Dates to Remember

Dear parents,

‘Brrrrrrr…it’s cold’. This week has been quite cold, but the weather forecasters tell us that next week could be our coldest time in a long, long while. Could I ask that parents remind students to wear their winter uniform. Also, the school playground can be quite cold in the morning. Term 2 Week 7 Whole School Bounce Back Program Focus for the next few weeks of the term: Emotions

We all experience a range of emotions every day. Our feelings are necessary for us to survive and co-exist harmoniously with others. Without pleasant feelings (e.g. feeling pleased, proud, excited, curious, loving) we would not learn what makes us happy and what we want to strive for. Experiencing a lot of pleasant feelings can help children become more resilient and bounce back more quickly from a difficulty or setback.

Unpleasant feelings are also important, too. Without unpleasant feelings as warnings (e.g. fear, worry and anger) we would be less able to protect ourselves from possible danger or to stand up for ourselves. Some unpleasant feelings (e.g. embarrassment, disappointment and sadness) also motivate us to think deeply about some of the difficult and challenging situations we sometimes have to cope with (e.g. failing, loss and rejection). This type of reflection helps us to learn from our experiences and become better able to make good decisions and solve problems.

Our unpleasant emotions can sometimes ‘hijack’ us and we react to them by behaving in ways that alienate others or work against us. Learning how to express their emotions in a positive and assertive way helps children to feel more in control when things are difficult for them.

Key messages to communicate to your child about their feelings:

Talking to someone else can help. When you are feeling sad or disappointed it can help if you talk to someone you trust about how you are feeling. They can help you check whether you are seeing things clearly and help you to solve problems.

What can you do to help your child become more able to understand and manage feelings?

Help your child to correctly name their feelings. Sometimes children make a mistake about how strong the feeling is; for example, they say they are really angry when they are just annoyed. Help them to use more low-key language like ‘cross’ instead of ‘furious’, and ‘down’ instead of ‘depressed’. Children also make mistakes about what they are feeling. For example, they may say they are angry when they are really scared because the sensations in their body are similar. Say ‘perhaps you’re also feeling …’ as a prompt.

week at Playgroup!

Term 2, Week 7

Due to the Public Holiday on Monday, Playgroup was only held on Tuesday this week. Nonetheless, all of the children who attended appeared to be having a great time.

This week we continued learning the words and actions to ‘row row row your boat’ and ‘The wheels on the bus’. It is amazing to watch the children becoming more familiar with the routines at playgroup and watching them become familiar with their peers. The routines set at playgroup will ensure a smoother transition for when the children are ready to start Kindergarten.

Next week we are looking forward to completing a range of activities to help us celebrate NAIDOC Day. This ties in nicely to the school NAIDOC event being held on Monday. NAIDOC activities will be held during both sessions of Playgroup next week.

Parents will also be receiving further information regarding both dental and sight screeners this coming week.

Please feel free to come along next Monday between 2-3pm or Tuesday between 9-10am to join in the fun. If you have any queries please feel free to email the school or contact Mrs Bateup.
