Give it a Go (GIAG) is a great way to try out fun activities in and around Newcastle! This booklet shows you all the activities planned for this first term, and should keep you fairly busy until Christmas! All sessions are open to ALL students, so you do not have to be a member of anything to get involved!

Activities Centre @ Students’ Union Building

Why not pop up to the first floor of your shiny new building to the friendly Activities Centre and come and see us in person? Please bring cash money for paid for events, as unfortunately we do not have capability to accept card payments.

Cancellations

Please note; purchasing of tickets is subject to the GIAG refund and cancellation policy. Please read out T&Cs on the website, or ask in the Activities Centre.

How to book onto a session

While not every session requires you to book in advance, we recommend that you do to avoid disappointment if a session becomes too full and we have to turn you away!

Learn to Meditate

Wednesday 18th January, 2pm FREE

Do you want to learn how to make your mind calm and peaceful? Do you want to learn how to concentrate better? Do you want to be happier in mind and body? If your answer is yes, then now’s your chance to benefit by being taught by an experienced meditation teacher who will guide you through some easy meditations. It’s simple and anyone can Give it a Go!

Massage Session

Wednesday 25th January, 12-6pm – 20 mins per person, FREE

Another opportunity to ease those exam stresses with a FREE 20 minute massage from our qualified masseuse. Come and enjoy a Thai massage, Indian head massage, reiki session or whatever you feel will help you the most! A booking deposit of £5 will be taken, and returned upon arrival for your session.

Culture Challenge Dragons Den

Thursday 26th January, 2pm, FREE

Never experienced Chinese New Year before? Come and join in this Culture Challenge event celebrating Chinese Culture with dance & craft making, music, entertainment & food. Can you build a traditional Dragon to celebrate the festivities? EVERYONE welcome, no experience/prior knowledge necessary!

Chinese New Year

Sunday 29th January, from 10am, FREE

Usher in the Year of the Dragon in Chinatown, Newcastle! Enjoy traditional crafts, dance, martial arts, food and drink, games and much more in a vibrant and colourful party in and around Stowell Street. Watch the spectacular dragon, lion and unicorn dances under the ornate Ceremonial Arch as you hear firecrackers explode, taste delicious Oriental foods, witness amazing traditional performances and join in the excitement of this joyful event.

CV Workshop

Monday 30th January, 1pm, FREE

It’s estimated that employers discard 3 out of 5 CVs within 2 minutes. Come to this workshop ran by the award winning Careers Service to find out how to ensure your CV reflects what you have to offer, and most importantly gets you noticed!

Tango

Wednesday 1st February, 2pm, FREE

Argentine tango is a dance from Buenos Aires in which the man will lead the woman through improvised steps. This Give it a Go session will involve an introduction to the basic steps of the dance, an explanation about what tango is about and how you can get involved with it, and videos and demonstrations of what tango looks like. There is no need to come with a partner, just bring yourself and some shoes that are appropriate to dance in!

Victoria Tunnel

Thursday 2nd February, 5pm, FREE

Unbeknown to most residents, Newcastle has a system of underground tunnels below the city (not the metro!!) that have been used for transportation of coal, and as shelters from the terrors of World War II. Come and explore these secret tunnels with a guided tour where you will learn much more about the city you now call home. A must see!

Womens’ Rugby

Saturday 4th February, 11am, FREE

Fancy yourself as a female fly half? Want to prove to boys that rough and tumble sports aren’t just for them? Come along to the taster session of Womens’ Rugby on Saturday 4th Feb, 11am-1pm. It will just be a beginner’s session so it doesn’t worry if you have never even picked up a rugby ball!

NSR Taster Sessions

Sunday 5th February, 12-5pm, FREE

Fancy yourself as the next Chris Moyles? Then put your skills to the test. Newcastle Student Radio is offering dj-ing taster sessions where you can bust some tunes and chat to your listeners. And after you’ve spun the decks, all that’s left is to sit back, relax and listen whilst your show goes out live on the airwaves later in the week. Bookable only, 20 minute slots available throughout the day.

Refreshers Fair

Monday 6th and Tuesday 7th February, 11am-3pm, FREE

Come and learn more about your clubs and societies as they present themselves in the NUSU Venue. The event will have a carnival theme, and will have free food, giveaways and much more! A great opportunity to learn more about the Student Union and have some fun!

Krav Maga

Wednesday 8th February, 2pm, FREE

This session is an introduction to the art and discipline of Krav Maga, a self defence system that is gaining popularity. Krav Maga is an eclectic hand-to-hand self-defence system which is highly practical and tactical. It allows practitioners to prevent, deal with and overcome all kinds of confrontations and attacks. It prepares the practitioner in the areas of self-defence, self-protection, fighting and combat skills as well as the ability to defend others. Based on natural movements and instinct, it is relatively simple to learn and retain which enhances the ability to use it in stressful situations. This session will involve physical training as well as a run through of the principles behind the system, and is ran by a professional instructor who can answer all your questions as well as teaching you how to protect yourself out there!

Culture Challenge – Ping Pong Night

Thursday 6th February, 7pm, FREE

Come and join our winter warmer - a mixture of fast paced fun & chilled out chatting- Ping Pong Night is not to be missed. One table, one ball, everyone has a bat, can you keep up? Everyone plays at once: its table tennis as you’ve never seen it before. A whole night of music, ping pong, and fun... You certainly don’t need to be a sporty type to enjoy this night!

Fencing

Friday 10th February, 4.30pm

Ever watched Pirates of the Caribbean and wanted to be Will Turner or Elizabeth Swann? This 90 minute session will teach you the basics of Fencing; ending with you taking on your friends in a match. Come and learn some swashbuckling moves!

Mixed Martial Arts

Sunday 12th February, 1pm, FREE

MMA encompasses elements from most martial arts including throws and floor work from Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, boxing, Thai boxing and judo to name a few. It’s one of the fastest growing sports and for those of you who’ve never done it before, don’t worry you won’t get thrown in a ring; this isn’t fight club! The session will cover some basic take downs, throws and holding techniques, and also some fitness training. Any level of fitness and ability welcome, come and try it out!

Pilates

Monday 13th February, 6pm, FREE

Pilates is an exercise routine which is great for core strength, flexibility and toning your whole body in general. It is also recommended by many physiotherapists for people with back problems. This is a beginner’s session with a professional instructor; just bring yourself and a flexible attitude!

Irish Dance

Wednesday 22nd February, 1pm, FREE

At this workshop the Irish Dance Society will teach some basic steps of Irish Dance to traditional music. We welcome beginners as well as anyone that has Irish danced before to come along and try to be the next Michael Flately!

Culture Challenge

School Sports Day, Wednesday 22nd February, 3pm, FREE

Want to relive your school days or sample a British school sports day for the first time? Enjoy an egg & spoon race and sack race, get together for a relay, or get tied up in our three legged race. Featuring an afternoon of traditional British school sports day games including an obstacle course, and some added extras thrown in, you’re bound to have great fun! Challenge your friends to see who really is the champion!

Thai Boxing

Friday 24th February, 5pm, FREE

Thai boxing is an ancient martial art, similar to kickboxing, where you use punching, kicking techniques, knees and elbows to strike your opponent. This session will take you through the basics so don’t worry if you’ve never done it before. Training’s always a good laugh and a great way to bust stress during exams or assignment so come along and try it out!

Bike Polo

Wednesday 15th February, 1.15pm, FREE

Come and experience the fun of playing the Sport of Kings…in a whole new way! NUSU’s Polo Club are holding a free afternoon of bike polo, you need no prior experience just the ability to ride a bicycle and the desire to play a fun sport which you probably never played before. We will start with a fun introduction and then divide everyone up into teams of 4 and have a fun tournament. You don’t even need to have a bike, everything will be provided!

Climb Newcastle

Thursday 16th February, 4pm, £4

Come and learn how to rock climb in a safe indoor environment, or to just go for your life if you have some experience! It’s Newcastle’s first dedicated climbing centre, and this price includes transportation, shoe hire, instruction and time on the wall!! Challenge yourself vertically…

Tynemouth Aquarium

Tuesday 21st February, 2pm, £3

Come and visit this award winning Aquarium in Tynemouth, and get a great experience of sea life fun! You’ll get to enjoy the seal show as part of your visit and also enjoy the ‘touch pool’ experience, where you can touch a variety of weird and wonderful creatures!

Ski Sessions

Recreational and Beginners, Wednesday 29th February, 12.30pm, £25

Come to Castleford Indoor Ski Slope and learn to ski or snowboard with this introduction lesson. Or, if you’re already a proficient boarder/skier, come and play on the snow for 3 whole hours! This price includes transportation both ways, lessons (if applicable), and essential equipment. You must bring your own gloves (or buy some there) and if you require specific clothing, it’s an additional £5 per person. ALL BOOKINGS MUST BE DONE BY 3RD FEBRUARY TO COME ALONG.

Yoga

Thursday 1st March, 6pm, FREE

A free style yoga session based on various styles designed to increase flexibility, strength and stamina. A series of sun salutations will guarantee heat within the body then onto standing postures and sitting postures, along the way we will be challenging mind body and breath. Expect a good workout! Mats are provided, all you need is to do is wear something comfortable that you’re happy to stretch and move around in.

Jitsu

Monday 5th March , 6pm, FREE

Jitsu is a defensive martial art mainly consisting of locks and throws. This introductory session will show you how to break –fall and roll safely, as well as learning a few basic moves. Professional instructors will ensure your safety, allowing you to enjoy your session whilst learning useful self-defence. No level of fitness or prior experience of martial arts is required. Come and try something new!

Culture Challenge – Murder Mystery

Wednesday 8th March, 7pm, FREE

A very British institution, come and join in an excellent game of clues, mysteries and murder most horrid. In teams you will uncover the chilling secrets of the School headmaster, his wife and the French teacher...

Edinburgh Castle

Saturday 10th March, 8am, £15

Come and explore one of the most beautiful cities in the UK, with transportation both ways as well as entry into Edinburgh Castle – built on an extinct Volcano and part of a World Heritage Site. You will also have some time in the afternoon to explore this ancient city. This is an excellent opportunity to visit a cultural icon of the British Isles. BOOKING ESSENTIAL.

Salsa

Tuesday 13th March, 5pm, FREE

Come along and try Salsa, Latin and Ballroom dancing with professional teachers! These exciting and social dance styles are fun to learn and also provide an opportunity to exercise. This 2 hour class will introduce you to the basic steps and put together a routine to the music, and the society has regular weekly classes to learn more.

Caving

Wednesday 14th March, 8am, £7

Come and explore some of the myriad of underground caves in the Yorkshire Dales with the Caving Club, this price includes guided exploration of the cave, transportation both ways and all equipment.
