1. IntroductionThefollowingguidewilldescribethecorefeaturesofBloombergandshouldproveusefulasasteppingstonetogettingstartedwiththeBloombergdatabase.
Bloombergisaveryusefuldatabaseformanypurposes,inparticularforgatheringrealtimetimeseriesdataasBloomberg isa financialservicesystemthatprovides24‐hourscurrentandaccuratefinancial,economic,and
governmentinformation,coveringallmarketsectorsworldwide.Italsofeaturesanalytics,companyfinancials,currentnewsreports,statisticsandhistoricalmarketdataapproximatelythirtyyearsback.
The purpose of this guide is to give a basic introduction to Bloomberg, including the custom Bloombergkeyboard,thebasicprinciplesofdatasearchandhowtoextractdatausingtheExcel‐Add.
For intermediary and advanced users, no in‐depth documentation of Bloomberg exists due to Bloomberg
policy,butforbeginnersthefollowingadditionalcouldprovehelpful:

TheKeyboardlooksdifferentfromanordinaryonethemaindifferencesarethethreecolorsofthekeys
Yellow:Theserefertospecificmarkets,e.g.commodities,equity,etc.
Green: Theseareactionkeysandallowyoutomovethroughoutthesystem.
Red: Thisonekeyisusedtologinand–outandresetascreen.
3. DataSearchInBloomberganydataisidentifiesbyTickerswhichareuniquereferences.ThedatasearchinBloombergisthusmerelyaquestionoffindingtherightticker,butasthetickersonlyhavealittledegreeafsystematicsthiscanbealittletricky.

Themostreliablewayoffindingthetickeristopresstheyellowkeyinlinewiththedatayouareinterestedin
e.g.Equity,then<GO>.Thisresultinageneraloverviewofequityfunctions.Under1)FindingEquitiesonewillfindTKTickerLookup.EitherclickthisorpressTK<GO>thenyouwillbeaskedtoenterPartialIssuerNamewhich is simply the name of the equity in question <GO>. Now a list of different datatypes will appear,
includinghitnumber.

4. DataExtractionThewaytoextractthedatafromBloombergwhentheTickerisknownisinExcelbytheBloombergAdd‐in.The
Add‐inisapowerfultoolthatdeliversthedatadirectlyintoaspreadsheetforcustomanalysisandcalculations.TheExcelAdd‐infunctionalityisavailableinExcelfromtheBloombergmenuitemonthetopmenubar.
IfyoudonotseetheBloomberginthetopmenubarinExcel,installitbythefollowingsteps:
1. ClickStart>AllPrograms>Bloomberg>InstallExcelAdd‐in.2. Inthepop‐upwindowclickInstall.
3. ReopenExcel.ThentheBloombergtabshouldappearinthetopmenu.
The Wizards in the Bloomberg menu provide a guided process to draw data from Bloomberg into aspreadsheet.ThemostcommonlyusedareImportDataandFundamentalsAnanlysis.

o It isalwaysagood idea tovalidate thedatabyusingHP (HistoricalPrices) in theBloomberg
program.
• FundamentalsAnalysisWizard
o Thiswizardenablesyou to retrieveBloomberg fundamentalsanalysispre‐defined templates,suchasBalanceSheets,CashFlowsetc.
Note:Thefirstdatacell inthespreadsheetwillcontainacommandfunction,whichwilldefinetherequestedseries.Ifthiscommandischangedorupdatesthenthedatawillupdateaccordingly.
