gathering point

The mudjimba Surf Life Saving Club on the

Sunshine coast has outgrown it’s small club-

house. They asked uQ Architecture students

to design proposals for a new or renovated

clubhouse building.

This proposal is for the new mudjimba SLSC

house builds upon the besser block structure

of the existing clubhouse. It has been devel-

oped within the restraints of having comply-

ing with the BCA standards, inexcessive con-

struction and maintenance costs, minimal

expansion of the existing land lease, and the

clubs preference for passive design.

westend site

Westend is a pre-war housing estate in Bremen, Ger-

many. despite its prime location close to the central

city precinct and beside the upcoming commercial

zone of utbremen, Westend remains an undesirable

place to live.

Our affordable strategic design approach address-

es key problems at three different scales - street,

building and apartment. The proposal seeks to ‘re-

activate’ Westend for the future well-being of its

community and residents.

This is a group project, but this section focus’ on my

own ideas and all included images are my personal

work.

Figure 1: The proposal moves parking underground and pe-destrianises minor roads (high-lighted orange).A series of small interventions implemented at street level help create a safe, creative ur-ban environment for residents use.

Figure 2: Two level apartment buildings have their access externalised and front veran-dahs built. These are non-com-munal so that residents should be encouraged to personalise and more substantially use the space.

EXISTINGLANDSCAPE

The conifer knoll forest is situat-

ed between ‘The Stack’ carpark

and the lakes at the university of

Queensland.

daily, hundreds of students and

staff travel between the carpark

and the central campus zone.

This project proposes a land-

scape intervention to transform

this route into an experiential jour-

ney. Opportunity for occupation

is designed alongside circulation

in an otherwise underutilized and

under-appreciated pocket of nat-

ural beauty at the uQ St Lucia uni-

versity campus.

‘nodes’ at various intervals are

designed into inhabitable spaces,

a quiet retreat away from bustling

university life. In one, the ground

envelopes an alcove where the

pine canopy forms a natural ceil-

ing. In another, views are offered

across green grass cut linearly by

the pines bare lower trunks.

mATeRIALS

The basic form-work is concrete, prevented from interrupting

the landscape and natural surrounds by melding into the rise

RIWKHKLOO7KHMRXUQH\EHJLQVDWWKHÀUVWÁRRURIWKHFDUSDUNDQG

continues on the same elevation towards the conifer knoll,

where it levels with the grass before cutting into the contours of

the hill. After gentle decent the path merges on the other side.

Where the nodes for occupation are designed at intervals, nat-

ural timber augments the concrete. The timber blends with the

surrounding pine forest, making warm and inhabitable spaces.

It also marks the transition from the connecting paths to these

zones.
