The Gas Authority of India Ltd(GAIL), later rechristened as GAIL (India) Ltd, today formally commenced a deserving celebration of its Silver Jubilee Year with the release of a special commemorative postage stamp in the national capital by none other than the President of India at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Last 25 years have been a chequered history for this Navaratna PSU under the Ministry of Petroleum&NaturalGas.

GAIL crossed several mile-stones during this period, making a significant contribution the cause of nation’s development. It helped harness new resource of energy called natural gas, which has since gained a lot of popularity. Being an efficient fuel or an industrial raw material, industries crave for gas supply and as a very environment friendly source of energy, helps keep pollutants low. GAIL pioneered laying solid gas pipeline network to facilitate carrying natural gas to far-off corners of the country leading to mushrooming of industries along the way. It set-up petrochemical plant, LPG plants, and introduced CNG supplies to vehicle and piped gas supply to houses at the mere turn of a tab just as watersupply.

History

The company was previously known as Gas Authority of India Ltd. It is India's principal gas transmission and marketing company. It was set up by the

Government of India in August 1984 to create gas sector infrastructure.

GAIL commissioned the 2,800 km Hazira-Vijaipur-Jagdishpur (HVJ) pipeline in 1991. During 1991-93, three liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) plants were

constructed and some regional pipelines acquired, enabling GAIL to begin its gas transportation in various parts of India.

GAIL began its city gas distribution in New Delhi in 1997 by setting up nine compressed natural gas (CNG) stations.

In 1999, GAIL set up northern India's only petrochemical plant at Pata. GAIL became the first Infrastructure Provider Category II Licensee and signed the

country's first Service Level Agreement for leasing bandwidth in the Delhi-Vijaipur sector in 2001, through its telecom business GAILTEL. In 2001, GAIL

commissioned world's longest and India's first Cross Country LPG Transmission Pipeline from Jamnagar to Loni.In order to secure Gas for its mainstream

business Exploration and Production department was created. Today GAIL is a partner in the Dawoo-OVL led consortium in two offshore block in Myanmar

which has made a gas discovery. Bulk of its blocks are located in India in the prolific basins of Cambay, Assam-Arakan, Mahanadi, Krishna Godavary Deep

water and onland, Cauvery onland and deep water and western offshore. It is actively scouting for foreign blocks both exploratory or discovery.

GAIL today has reached new milestones with its strategic diversification into Petrochemicals, Telecom and Liquid Hydrocarbons besides gas infrastructure.

The company has also extended its presence in Power, Liquefied Natural Gas re-gasification, City Gas Distribution and Exploration & Production through

participation in equity and joint ventures. Incorporating the new-found energy into its corporate identity, Gas Authority of India was renamed GAIL (India)

Limited on November 22, 2002.

GAIL (India) Limited has shown organic growth in gas transmission through the years by building large network of trunk pipelines covering length of around

11,000 km. Leveraging on the core competencies, GAIL played a key role as gas market developer in India for decades catering to major industrial sectors

like power, fertilizers, and city gas distribution. Currently GAIL transmits more than 160 mmscmd of gas through its dedicated pipelines and have more than

70% market share in both gas transmission and marketing.

The 218-kilometre-long Chainsa-Sultanpur-Neemrana pipeline became operational in April 2011. GAIL is currently implementing pipeline projects to lay

additional 6,900 km of pipelines.

Gail Success Story

Started as a natural gas pipeline company in 1984, GAIL has successfully evolved into a major integrated gas company with presence across the natural gas value chain and with global footprints.  GAIL’s success lies primarily in its project management skills that is evident from the number of pipeline and petrochemical projects been taken up and completed efficiently. Being a lean and thin organization, GAIL believes in containing quality talent who form a part of the GAIL family.

GAIL (India) Limited has shown organic growth in gas transmission through the years by building large network of trunk pipelines covering length of around 11000 Km. Leveraging on the core competencies, GAIL also laid 1900 Km of LPG pipeline across the country which includes world’s longest exclusive LPG pipeline, Jamnagar-Loni pipeline. GAIL played a key role as gas market developer in India for decades catering to major industrial sectors like power, fertilizers, and city gas distribution. Currently GAIL transmits more than 160 mmscmd of gas through its dedicated pipelines and have more than 70% market share in both gas transmission and marketing.

GAIL diversified from gas marketing and transmission into Polymer business by setting up North India’s first gas based Petrochemicals complex at Pata, UP. Even without having any prior experience in petrochemicals, GAIL commissioned the plant successfully in year 1999 by rigorous team work and project management capabilities. Currently petrochemical business is one of the core focus area of GAIL. GAIL recently set up a JV, Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Limited, to construct a Greenfield petrochemical plant in Assam. GAIL also has equity stake in OPAL petrochemical plant led by ONGC.

As per the strategy of expanding global footprint, GAIL formed a wholly-owned subsidiary company GAIL Global (Singapore) Pte Ltd in Singapore 2004 to route its overseas investment. It successfully secures participation in 2 retail gas companies in Egypt, Fayum Gas Company and Shell CNG in 2003 and acquired 15% equity stake in NatGas, Egypt. GAIL forms a Joint Venture Company (JVC) with China Gas Global Energy Holdings Limited in 2007. In 2010, GAIL opened its first overseas representative office in Cairo, Egypt. GAIL has been a leading public enterprise with a consistently excellent financial track record. The Turnover and PAT have shown remarkable accomplishment with CAGR of 13% and 14% respectively in last decade.

GAIL always promotes the green and clean energy concept and use of natural gas as energy source. In this direction, GAIL set up several JV and subsidiaries for CGD. First such JV, Mahanagar Gas Limited formed with British Gas incorporated to implement Mumbai City Gas Distribution project followed by Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) to supply of gas to household sector, transport sector & commercial consumers in Delhi. In 2008, GAIL incorporated a wholly owned subsidiary, GAIL gas Ltd to focus on city gas distribution.

GAIL’s achievements has recognized by industry and following are the list of a few awards received by GAIL for its excellence No.1 gas utility company in Asia and No.2 gas utility company globally, ‘PLATTS Top 250’, 2010.

ROLE OF GAIL IN INDIAN ECONOMY: ::

Serving the NationThe setting up of GAIL (India) Limited, formerly known as Gas Authority of India Limited in August, 1984 heralded a new era of natural gas in the country. GAIL is now completing 25 glorious yeas of service to the nation. Since 1984, GAIL has made significant contributions to the nation’s economy by supplying natural gas through its pipeline network for Generation of over 87,000 MW of power.• Production of over 145 million tones of Urea;• Production of LPG for over 7 crore households in the country.• Over 5.75 lakh vehicles in the country today running on CNG supplied by GAIL and over 7 lakh households on Piped Natural Gas (PNG) in the country• Production of petrochemicals of around 400,000 MTs which is used in the plastics industry GAIL enabled the use of natural gas as a new energy resource in the country, which was earlier being flared in the offshore fields of Bombay High.

The natural gas infrastructure of around 7,000 km. accounting for over 82% of the total pipeline infrastructure in India, set up so far by GAIL has contributed enormously to the economically and socially critical sectors such as fertilizers and power. GAIL also has the distinction of pioneering the clean fuel revolution for transport sector in the country with theintroduction of CNG in Delhi and Mumbai which has significantly helped in reducing pollution levels in these two cities. The pipeline network of GAIL supplies natural gas to various sectors equivalent to 204 million barrels of oil equivalent per year, thus not only contributing to import substitution but also providing environment friendly fuel.

Page 4: G.A.I.L Success

The natural gas infrastructure of GAIL plays a significant role in serving the nation by facilitating equitable geographical distribution of economic benefits. It provides ready market access to the domestic gas producers, making gas available to the customers including those who are remotely located, facilitating monetization and development of gas fields which are otherwise scattered and devoid of market access. The pipeline network has created choice for customers by providing cheaper, environment-friendly alternative fuel and has reduced import-dependency as natural gas has substituted liquid fuels such as Naphtha, fuel oil, etc.

GAIL has also spearheaded the spread of City Gas and Piped Gas network in the country which has helped in bringing down pollution levels in metros such as Delhi and Mumbai. GAIL’s pipeline network caters to the gas consumers in the states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Assam and Tripura. In addition to supplying Natural Gas to various consumers, GAIL has also set up 7 LPG plants and a Petrochemical plant to extract value added products from gas. GAIL produces around 1.35 MMTPA of Liquid Hydrocarbon including LPG for domestic consumption. GAIL is now an integrated energy company along the natural gas value chain with global footprints.

Today, GAIL has interests in the business of natural gas, LPG, liquid hydrocarbons and petrochemicals, the latter being value-added products. The Company has also entered in telecom sector by leasing bandwidth available through the OFC which is laid along the gas pipelines for their operation and maintenance. GAIL has also diversified into exploration & production, city gas distribution & is steadily developing an overseas presence.

In the area of corporate social responsibility, one of the major projects of GAIL has been setting up of Air PollutionRelated Disease Diagnostic Centres (APRDCs) in over 20 cities in various parts of the country, at a cost of about Rs. 4 crore. Under this programme, the diagnostic centres equipped with modern diagnostic amenities related to respiratory and cardio-vascular diseases and well trained medical personnel have been set up in partnership with reputed Government / trust managed hospitals / institutions to provide diagnostic facilities and treatment to the people who are not able to afford baseline investigations for diagnosis. APRDC also works as R & D for development of facilities for diagnosing suspended particles, which are known to cause acute heart diseases.

In more recent times, GAIL has initiated steam conversion project based on waste heat recovery system from GAIL’s gas turbines. This rare, multi-benefit project would not only utilize clean development mechanism (CDM) for power generation, but also lead to conservation of gas as well as increased energy efficiency. GAIL has a consistent track-record of dividend payment. So far, GAIL has disbursed dividend of Rs.6,230 crore to the shareholders including Government of India, which is more than seven times the original investment of Rs. 845.65 crore by the Government in its equity capital. Further, the Government has been disinvesting its shareholding in GAIL from time to time, bringing down its equity holding to 57.345 percent and thereby contributing to the exchequer an additional amount of Rs. 3,400 crore. International credit rating agency, Moody’s have assigned a Baa2 indicative foreign currency debt rating (1 notch above the sovereign foreign currency rating) and A3 local currency issuer rating (5 notches above the sovereign local currency rating) to GAIL (India) Ltd.

Background

The history of GAIL (India) Limited, erstwhile Gas Authority of India Limited, is closely aligned to the growth of the Petroleum Industry in India.Till the mid eighties, state-owned Public Sector Undertakings in the Upstream & Downstream Segments were concentrating on effective sourcing and utilization of the oil resources of the country. ONGC had already made important gas discoveries in the western offshore – South Bassein fields which could not be utilized in absence of gas piping infrastructure. The Government embarked upon a planned and focused development of the natural gas sector in the country..Contribution of SubsidyIn order to make LPG affordable to common man, GAIL has been contributing in terms of subsidy since the year 2003-04. The total subsidy contribution by GAIL has been to the tune of Rs. 6,566 crore.

ConclusionNatural gas infrastructure developed by GAIL over the years has touched the life of common man in many ways, be it social, economic, or environmental aspects. The development has not only supported various industrial segments like power, and fertilizer, but also helped to further expand and meet the demand in these sectors. It has also helped in improving the quality of life in the alarmingly polluted cities like Delhi, Mumbai Agra & Firozabad etc. In addition to the direct, the indirect benefits as a result of these infrastructural developments by GAIL, has helped social development in the rural areas by extending basic amenities. The overall contribution to the nation has been truly remarkable. With its robust future plans, GAIL is committed to build a green future for India

Page 10: G.A.I.L Success

GAIL has been ranked No. 1 Gas utility company in Asia and second in Gas utility globally. GAIL has also been conferred 17th rank by PLATTS in the fastest growing Asian Companies. PLATTS has been coming out with Top 250 ranks of Global Energy Company every year. ‐ This is one of the most prestigious awards in the field of Oil and Gas in the world. PLATTS ranks the energy companies' financial performance globally, regionally and by industrial sector. Its ranking is based on four key metrics‐ assets worth, revenues, profits and return on invested capital. All companies in the list have more than US $2 billion assets. The fundamentals and market data comes from a database compiled and maintained by Capital IQ Compustat, a business of Standard

& Poor’s, which like PLATTS, is a division of the McGraw Hill Companies.‐

Did You Know?

Did you know that oil can be found under the ocean floor? Some of this oil comes out of the ground through cracks in the earth that geologists call natural oil seeps. Another way oil comes from the ocean floor is through drilling. The Bureau's job is to watch over the oil companies as they drill for oil in the ocean and make sure that they get the oil out of the ground safely. To do this, the Bureau has scientists, engineers, technicians and other professionals who inspect how the oil gets out of the ground and to study the surrounding ocean environment.

In the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of central and southern California, oil is being taken from the ocean floor every day. In fact, this area of the ocean is producing about 78,000 barrels of oil a day...that's a lot of oil!!!

Oil companies use big steel structures, called offshore platforms, to assist them in getting oil out from beneath the ocean floor. These platforms are like big skyscrapers or a mini city in the ocean. In the future, America may begin to explore renewable energy opportunities, such as harnessing energy from wind, waves, and currents, in our ocean environments. In fact, did you know that America is currently reviewing a proposal for the Nation's first offshore wind park?.

Natural Gas Transmission :

Natural Gas is a new age fuel. Natural Gas is the cleanest of fossil fuels. Natural Gas satisfies most of the requirements for fuel in a modern day industrial society, being efficient, non-polluting and relatively economical. Natural Gas requires a strong distribution network to not only support existing demand, but also fuel future demand. A big challenge lies in bridging the physical gap between demand and supply centers in an efficient, safe and eco-friendly manner. Pipeline transportation of gas offers a safe, economic and environmentally sound alternative to most other modes of energy transport. Meeting the emerging demand for gas requires transportation of gas across the length and breadth of India through creating gas transportation infrastructure of more than 2-3 times the present size.  The Government and Regulator also recognize the need to augment the natural gas transmission infrastructure in the country. With the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board in place, the conditions to support an expanded natural gas grid (NGG) and a fully functioning natural gas market are in place. Adequate supply of affordable energy is a pre-requisite for sustained growth, especially in the developing and emerging economies. Natural gas has emerged as most benign fuel in this regard.

Natural Gas is a new age fuel. With only one carbon and four hydrogen atoms per molecule, Natural Gas has the lowest carbon to hydrogen ratio, hence it burns completely, making it the cleanest of fossil fuels. Natural Gas satisfies most of the requirements for fuel in a modern day industrial society, being efficient, non-polluting and relatively economical. The periodic uncertainties and volatility in both the price and supply of oil, have also helped Natural Gas emerge as a major fuel in the energy basket across countries.

Natural Gas comes in 4 basic forms:

Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) - Natural Gas which has been liquefied at – (Minus) 160 degree Centigrade. Natural Gas is liquefied to facilitate transportation in large volumes in cryogenic tankers across sea.

Regasified Liquefied Natural Gas (RLNG) – LNG Re-gasified before transporting it to consumers through Pipelines. Compressed Natural gas, CNG - Natural Gas compressed to a pressure of 200-250 kg/cm2 used as fuel for transportation. CNG

decreases vehicular pollution on the virtue of being cleaner fuel than liquid fuels. Piped Natural gas, PNG - Natural Gas distributed through a pipeline network that has safety valves to maintain the pressure,

assuring safe, uninterrupted supply to the domestic sector for cooking and heating / cooling applications.

India’s natural gas scenario is undergoing rapid changes and gas is poised to occupy a significant share in the energy mix. In order to diversify energy

Gas – Marketing :

Since inception in 1984, GAIL has been the undisputed leader in the marketing, transmission and distribution of Natural Gas in India. As India's leading Natural Gas Major, it has been instrumental in the development of the Natural Gas market in the country.

Currently, GAIL sells around 51 % (excluding internal usage) of Natural Gas sold in the country. Of this, 37% is to the power sector and 26% to the fertilizer sector. Currently, GAIL is supplying around 60 MMSCMD of Natural Gas from domestic sources to customers across India. These customers range from the smallest of companies to mega power and fertilizer plants. GAIL has adopted a Gas Management System to handle multiple sources of supply and delivery of gas in a co-mingled form and provide a seamless interface between shippers, customers, transporters and suppliers. We are present in 11 states, i.e., Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, and Tripura. We are further extending our coverage to states of Kerala, Karnataka, Punjab, Uttarakhand, West Bengal and Bihar through our upcoming pipelines. We are also actively pursuing opportunities in inter-regional gas trade both in the form of Pipeline gas and LNG.

GAIL Business

Started as a natural gas pipeline company in 1984, GAIL has successfully evolved into a major integrated gas company with presence across the natural gas

value chain and with global footprints. GAIL's success lies primarily in its project management skills that is evident from the number of pipeline and

petrochemical projects been taken up and completed efficiently. Being a lean and thin organization, GAIL believes in containing quality talent who form a part

of the GAIL family.

GAIL (India) Limited has shown organic growth in gas transmission through the years by building large network of trunk pipelines covering length of around

11,000 km. Leveraging on the core competencies, GAIL also laid 1,900 km of LPG pipeline across the country which includes world's longest exclusive LPG

pipeline, Jamnagar-Loni pipeline. GAIL played a key role as gas market developer in India for decades catering to major industrial sectors like power,

fertilizers, and city gas distribution. Currently GAIL transmits more than 160 MMSCMD of gas through its dedicated pipelines and have more than 70% market

share in both gas transmission and marketing.

GAIL diversified from gas marketing and transmission into Polymer business by setting up North India's first gas based Petrochemicals complex at Pata, UP.

Even without having any prior experience in petrochemicals, GAIL commissioned the plant successfully in year 1999 by rigorous team work and project

management capabilities. Currently petrochemical business is one of the core focus area of GAIL. GAIL recently set up a JV, Brahmaputra Cracker and

Polymer Limited, to construct a Greenfield petrochemical plant in Assam. GAIL also has equity stake in OPAL petrochemical plant led by ONGC.

Page 13: G.A.I.L Success

As per the strategy of expanding global footprint, GAIL formed a wholly owned subsidiary company GAIL Global (Singapore) Pte Ltd in Singapore 2004 to

route its overseas investment. It successfully secures participation in 2 retail gas companies in Egypt, Fayum Gas Company and Shell CNG in 2003 and

acquired 15% equity stake in NatGas, Egypt. GAIL forms a Joint Venture Company (JVC) with China Gas Global Energy Holdings Limited in 2007. In 2010,

GAIL opened its first overseas representative office in Cairo, Egypt. GAIL has been a leading public enterprise with a consistently excellent financial track

record. The Turnover and PAT have shown remarkable accomplishment with CAGR of 13% and 14% respectively in last decade.

GAIL always promotes the green and clean energy concept and use of natural gas as energy source. In this direction, GAIL set up several JV and

subsidiaries for CGD. First such JV, Mahanagar Gas Limited formed with British Gas incorporated to implement Mumbai City Gas Distribution project followed

by Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) to supply of gas to household sector, transport sector & commercial consumers in Delhi. In 2008, GAIL incorporated a

wholly owned subsidiary, GAIL gas Ltd to focus on city gas distribution.

GAIL's achievements has recognized by industry and following are the list of a few awards received by GAIL for its excellence No.1 gas utility company in

Asia and No.2 gas utility company globally, "˜PLATTS Top 250", 2010. Selected as the top Indian company in the Gas Processing, Transmission and

Marketing sector for the Dun & Bradstreet - American Express Corporate Awards 2006. GAIL's Dahej-Vijaipur Pipeline Project won the Silver Medal in Mega

Projects Category at the International Project Management Association Awards, 2006. Received the Platts Global Industry Leadership Award 2005. Rated as

one of the Best Employers in India by Hewitt Associates in 2004 Global Platts Survey No. 1 Company among global gas utilities in terms of Return on

GAILTEL

GAILTEL is the telecom arm of GAIL India Limited, which mainly caters to GAIL's internal Telecom requirements apart from commercially offering the

Telecom services to private players. GAILTEL operates and maintains around 13,000 route kilometres of OFC Network spread across India. The USP of

GAILTEL is - it's secured OFC Network along the Gas Pipeline and high QoS.

Currently, GAILTEL operates under three telecom licenses - which are - IP-I, IP-II and ISP-A.

GAILTEL serves almost all the leading Telecom operators of India, such as Vodafone, IDEA Cellular, Tata Tele, Airtel. It also serves ISP's like TULIP, France

Telecom etc.

GAILTEL owns and operates around 14,000 km of OFC network spread across India, barring North East states, JNK, orissa, Bihar, Jharkand, HP and

Uttranchal. The telecom head office is based out of Noida, with zonal offices in major cities to support.

Telecom business is a synergy well exposed by GAIL. For its internal communications and SCADA requirements GAIL needs to lay OFC network, so using

the same infrastructure GAIL has added one more revenue stream to its business.

With more than 100 city gas (CNG) projects in pipe-line, through which, GAILTEL can explore the synergy of reaching individual homes on fiber. Piped Gas

will roll-out in major cities and OFC (micro OFC) can be laid along with gas pipelines. This also throws a great potential to cross sell the city OFC network to

other Telecom operators. This is the next big potential to all the city gas ventures and to GAILTEL if utilised and exploited properly.

GAIL GAS LTD

Recruitment ChallengesDue to the unique characteristics of the energy industry, many organizations around the world face recruitment challenges. Below are some scenarios we have encountered:

Lean HR departmentSmaller or startup teams typically have a skeleton recruitment team, or one that is managing multiple competing priorities. During recruitment drives mandated by the line business, such organizations are sometimes swamped and unable to either find or hire the right candidates.

Domain knowledge issuesAs companies expand to new geographies or business lines, the in-house team may have limited knowledge of these domains. Local norms, talent sources, compensation scales etc may be different. Companies may spend precious time and effort in determining the right approach and recruitment methodology, and yet be unable to deliver due to limited on-the-ground presence.

Weak employment brandingSmall Organizations operating in an established market in the energy sector are faced with the issue of lack of brand visibility among prospective candidates. Even for more established organizations, candidates may also sometimes form the wrong impression about the company prospects, job requirements or assignment destination leading to missed opportunities.

Vendor management constraintsOrganizations looking to set up operations in a new geography are faced with the problem of scouting for and dealing with multiple recruitment vendors. Scouting for new vendors proves to be a time consuming and commercially expensive exercise.

Difficulty in sourcing unique rolesHR departments of small and large organizations in the energy sector face a major bottleneck when hiring for senior roles or for roles that are unique, particularly in techno-commercial fields. These roles are mission critical in nature and demand niche skill sets which are not easy to source.

The Aptitude test is carried out mainly to examine the speed of the candidates.

GAIL Placement Test

The written paper will have 150 questions. The exam has duration of 2 hours. The questions will be of subjective types. Out of these, 15 will be for the General Awareness topics and 35 for the Quantitative Aptitude.  The remaining 100 questions will be based on software or IT. Questions might also include topics like JAVA Programming, C and C++ etc. They need to answer all questions and that took within the given time.

GAIL Placement Interview

In the interview, basic technical questions will be asked. Sometimes, questions that pertain to the summer training will also be asked. At the technical interview, students will be asked a lot of technical questions on the subjects they have studies so far. The final part of the selection procedure will be the HR interview. Candidates will be asked to describe about themselves. Questions will also be asked on hobbies and others.

GAIL Placement Test Preparation Tips

The written exam will comprise of general questions. In fact, this can be considered to be the easiest part in the selection procedure. Different books such as R.S. Agarwal will be of good help to them. They can also refer to other competitive books. Since the questions will be quite tricky, candidates need to be quite honest when replying.

GAIL Placement Interview Preparation Tips

Once the candidate clears the written test, there will be an interview. For this, they will need to prepare beforehand. Many technical questions will be posed. Apart from this, queries will also be asked from projects. When they are facing the judging panel, aspirants need to be very confident. Unless they answer confidently, the panel might think that they are not confident in themselves. Candidates must also never be over confident. They ought to be modest and calm when they answer questions that are asked to them. Also, if they are given an

opportunity to ask questions about the company, students must make up the most. They can show the panel that they have a genuine interest in the firm. The final round will be with the HR. To succeed in this round, aspirants need to be ready to answer questions on strength and weakness, role models and about themselves. In case candidates do not know or are unsure about an answer, they need to let the panel know about the same.

Page 20: G.A.I.L Success

While the conventional models like Job Portals and placement vendors have proven to be effective, the Recruitment industry in India has matured over the years. There is always a constant need for small, medium and large corporates to continuously improvise on their talent acquisition sources since the conventional ones become more redundant, off-the-track and expensive.

Some organizations realized the folly of the conventional models and identified alternate sources like Campus Hiring, Buddy Referrals(Employee-referrals), Internal Job Rotations, however, they could only manage upto 30% of their hiring needs via these sources. Hence, in spite of the cost-advantage attached with these sources, they couldn’t prove to be the only sources that organizations could rely upon.

Bridging this gap, many “new-age” Web 2,0 interfaces cropped up in the last year or so.These models claimed to combine the power of career networking (social networking portals like Orkut, Ryze and Facebook) and portals that allowed groups and forums based a large plethora of subjects ranging from J2EE to Project Management(like yahoo groups, google and msn groups etc.) These sources did manage to generate Passive candidates at certain quarters – skills, experience et al, but hardly replaced the conventional sources of recruitment.

The industry saw the advent of referral recruitment models. Again, these models have largely been unsuccessful in catching the pulse of the Indian recruitment industry. Many have failed to live upto the ideology and hype of referral recruitment. Some of them have actually been glorified RPO units in guise of Referral recruitment.

By far, the most popular career networking source for passive candidates - is LinkedIn which essentially is a US based model but has managed to catch a relatively small portion of the passive candidate market in India and other globally labor-oriented markets outside USA.

But owing to it’ adaptability and price-tag, it’s not the most effective tool that can replace the burgeoning talent crunch (of course, now the figures are down and out post-recession and US sub-prime crisis).

So, considering all of above, we can only gather as much as confidence that Conventional models still rule the roost as far as the Indian Recruitment Industry goes.

That leaves us to cite the mention of a free recruitment B2B marketplace that has had a fair amount of success in the USA and is largely untapped in the Indian context.

In India, this open B2B marketplace is introduced by two budding entrepreneurs with their venture - theHiringtool - an excellent eBusiness, web 2.0 interface that connects Employers with a large network of placement consultants.

TheHiringtool has been launched in India, keeping in mind the Indian Recruitment & Staffing business, hence in it`s concept, strategy and adaptability, it is a Unique model.

How does the system work?Step 1 - Employers post their jobs for free and attach a Placement Fee (Varies from 8.33% - 12.5% or more)Step 2 - Recruiters search job listings they are keen to work on and get associated with Employer. theHiringtool introduces the consultant/s to the Employer via the system.Step 3 - Candidates are submitted and reviewed by the employerStep 4 - Shortlisted candidates are interviewed by the employerStep 5 - The hire is made, and the recruiter gets paid via theHiringtool!

FAQs

1) Who is their competition and what is their biggest strength compared to competition?theHiringtool has no direct competition. In the e-recruitment space, there are job boards(naukri, monster etc) – employers and consultants go to jobboards to find candidates and spend time reviewing resumes and qualifying them as well as

Page 21: G.A.I.L Success

coordinating interviews; referral based recruiting (reffster, yellojobs, techtribe etc.)- these sites try to leverage the power of personal connecton to make hiring recommendations. The problem with this model is that people are not in the business of placing their friends plus the rewards that are offered are not enough for someone to make a living; and, there are social networking sites (linkedin).Their strongest strength is the streamlined third party recruitment process which gives the employers access to the largest collection of placement consultant and for the consultants, they provide qualified job order and streamlined payment process on both ends.

2) What is their long term vision with Hiring Tool?To create a talent trading platform like a stock exchange so all third party recruitment is being routed through theHiringTool

3) What is Hiring Tool`s revenue model?Their revenue model is a percentage split of the placement fees and subscription model providing with enterprise level management of the application.

4) What technologies do they use? They are built using .net/asp and ms-sql and their Product is constantly evolving to suit the market needs - both from Employer and Vendor perspective.

5) Final message: Trying is Believing! Rather than seeing TheHiringtool as Competition, Vendors and Employers should look at this unique model as a Consortium. A consortium that would enable the Vendors to create an effective marketplace and give way to an innovative recruitment model. In the present scenario, each vendor has limited market share in terms of Employer acquisition, with TheHiringtool, vendors will increase this marketshare multifold! Imagine, how much it can help Vendors to utilize and optimize their pool of candidates! Same candidates could be recycled for so many jobs across industry verticals on theHiringtool. Similarly, for Employers this open marketplace has the potential for organizing not only their Vendor Management but also optimizing their Talent Acquisition process.
