On November 12nd, 2014 the membership ofZurich, Switzerland based Aeroclub FluggruppeZürcher Oberland (FGZO) selected the TecnamP2008JC to be the next trainer of choice for theirextensive training fleet.

The decision, voted by all 123 members, cameout after a very detailed aircraft comparisonpresentation by Bruno Wettstein, President ofFGZO and Philip Reich, Training Fleet Captain.

The FGZO membership were extremelyimpressed with the P2008JC’s low noise signature, its comfort, ease of use and itsunbeatable operating costs.

Walter Da Costa, Tecnam’s Head of Sales andMarketing said, “We were delighted to be invited

to participate in FGZO’s rigorous selectionprocess and especially as following an intensiveevaluation, that we were selected above a number of other competitors. The Tecnam P2008JC is a single engine, highwing, two-seater training aircraft built in Italy. It has a carbon-fibre fuselage, metal wings andstabilator and a fixed tricycle undercarriage. ASSOCIATIONAOPA Goes Back to ItsGrassroots- On its 75th anniversary, the pilots associationcelebrates successes and looks to the future.

Homecoming Fly-In last October. The associationcelebrated with an open house at its headquartersat Maryland’s Frederick Municipal Airport.

In 1939, five pilots concerned about excessive regulation, rising costs, access toairspace, and other challenges confrontinggeneral aviation founded the Aircraft Owners

and Pilots Association. This year the organization, now with hundreds of thousands of members, celebrated its 75thanniversary, and though the group has enjoyedsuccesses over the years, “all the reasons it wasfounded still exist today,” said president MarkBaker on the eve of the AOPA Homecoming Fly-In last October. The association celebratedwith an open house at its headquarters atMaryland’s Frederick Municipal Airport, highlighting some of its new strategies for meeting civil aviation’s persistent challenges.

The event drew about 3,000 people and 345 aircraft, despite low skies and gusting winds.Headquarters was open for tours, the vendor tent buzzed, food trucks dispensed lunches, and Mike Goulian, one of the group’s newlynamed Ambassadors (another outreach initiative), performed aerobatics in his Extra330SC. The association also showed off its newly refurbished Cessna 152, part of a demonstration of affordable flying in which oldairframes are rebuilt and sold cheaply to flyingclubs and flight schools.

CONVENTIONDAHER-SOCATA’s TBMOPAConvention- TBM Owners and Pilots Association 2014convention still rising

DAHER-SOCATA and the TBM Owners and PilotsAssociation (TBMOPA) today announced that the2014 annual TBMOPA convention broke anotherattendance record with the presence of morethan 100 TBM 700s and TBM 850s, along withseveral brand-new TBM 900s.

Attracting almost a quarter of the entire TBM fleetin North America, this became the largest fly-inconvention dedicated to a single-engine turbineaircraft or small private jet – registering anincrease in attendance of three percent from lastyear.

The 2014 TBMOPA Convention was held fromOctober 29 to November 1 in historic New Orleans, Louisiana, with aircraft accommodated at the city’s Lakefront Airport.The meeting included three days of dynamic academic sessions customized for the TBM aircraft family, featuring presentations by industryleaders and DAHER-SOCATA, as well as TBM system vendors such as Pratt and Whitney,Canada.

Among the speakers were Jerry Cockrell, whosediscussion was entitled: “How to Exercise PoorJudgment and Survive;” Earl F. Weener, a Member of the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), speaking on general aviation safety; and Bill Panarello, addressingcharacteristics of the TBM radar system. The guest speaker was U.S. Air Force Capt. BrianUdell, who recounted how he bailed out of hisF15 fighter aircraft at over 800 mph.

As with the association’s previous annual conven-tions, participation in the technical sessions qualified members for savings on insurance premiums that are exclusive to TBMOPA.

Hartzell Propeller Inc. and Quest Aircraft haveentered into a five-year agreement for the supplyof Hartzell props for the Quest KODIAK turboprop aircraft.

the day. We just want to discourage ‘no shows’ and cover the cost of the lunch.

Saab 340

Atlas Air Service has further expanded theirscope of approval with the aircraft type Saab340. The new European certification in accordance with EASA Part 145 was obtained in October 2014 through the German FederalAviation Office (LBA) that is also recognised bythe Ukrainian aviation authority.

The regional aircraft Saab 340 is a two-engineturboprop of the Swedish manufacturer Saab ABwith a maximum passenger capacity of 35. The company has built 459 aircraft of this type;379 Saab 340 are still being operated worldwideand 80 in Europe (Source: Saab, June 2014).One of the first Saab 340 maintenance customersof Atlas Air Service comes from Ukraine.

Atlas Air Service offers now maintenance andservice support to all Saab 340 operators in itsown service centre at Airport Bremen. As certifiedmaintenance organisation the company has morethan forty years of experience in servicing andmaintaining various aircraft types.

Bombardier announced the Challenger 650 inOctober, an updated version of the Challenger605. Externally identical to the existing model, ithas improved GE CF34-3B engines to providebetter short-field performance and has theRockwell Collins ProLine 21 Advanced avionicsand a new cabin interior with redesigned seats.

Meanwhile, the prototype Falcon 5X is in finalassembly and will use two new SnecmaSilvercrest engines. Epic took a mock-up of the E1000 single-engined turboprop to BACE in Orlando. This will will be the certificated version of the kit-build Epic LT.

Honda expects its HA420 light jet to be certifi-cated within months, with just a small amount offlight testing and paperwork to complete.

Nextant has fitted the GE H75-100 enginesto its G90XT test prototype. First flight is imminent and first deliveries are expected to take place next year.

Russian Helicopters (part of State CorporationRostec) has launched flight tests on the first prototype of the multirole Mi-171A2 helicopter.During its first flight its main systems were tested and found to be in excellent workingorder, according to commander and test pilot 1st class Salavat Sadriev.

The first prototype of the Mi-171A2 wasdesigned for tests on its in-flight operability andsafety when using the KBO-17 avionics suite,including its interoperability with the new VK-2500PS-03 engines, and to test the new powerplant. The first Mi-171A2 prototype hasbeen subjected to ground runs, which passedoff smoothly and led to the first successful testsin hover mode in October 2014. The new helicopter’s rotor system and engine were testedby the special ‘flying laboratory’ – Mi-171LL.

Mi-38 starts final certification tests

Russian Helicopters (part of State CorporationRostec) has launched the final stage of certifica-tion testing on the Mi-38 multirole helicopter.Testing is being carried out on two prototypemodels of the helicopter fitted with Russian TV7-117V engines.

On 3 November 2014, Russian Helicopters’ Mil Moscow Helicopter Plant received the fourthprototype of the Mi-38 in order to continue certification flight testing. The helicopter is builtat Kazan Helicopters, also a Russian Helicopterscompany. On 20 October 2014, it successfullycompleted a series of hover tests and low-speedground runs, after which it was transported overland to the Mil Moscow Helicopter Plant.

Gulf Aviation assist-ed Cardiff HP duringNATO Summit

During September’s NATO summit, Gulf Aviationcame to Cardiff Heliport’s rescue by providingurgent fuel supplies to keep the emergency air-craft airborne.

The NATO global gathering of world leadersbrought stringent security measures to Cardiffincluding five police helicopters which needed to be refuelled constantly, as well as an airambulance and a military chopper.

The heliport, which usually goes through anaverage of 10,000 litres of aviation fuel a month,needed an urgent resupply after more than30,000 litres were drained from its stockpile inthree days. Gulf Aviation, a division of nationalfuel and lubricants supplier Certas Energy, cameto the heliport’s aid by securing an urgent transportation of fuel from Grangemouth inScotland to the Welsh Capital.

FLIGHT TRAININGMULTIFLIGHTFlight Training Centre newCabri G2 arrival to its fleetOne of the leading UK flight training centres -Multiflight is adding a Guimbal Cabri G2 helicopter toits fleet of flight training and self fly hire aircraft. TheCabri G2 is due to arrive at Multiflight early in 2015.

“The Cabri G2 is one of the most innovative helicoptersto be produced in some time, offering a level of safetypreviously reserved formilitary and a fewexpensive turbine helicopters,” said MikeMcKenzie, Multiflight’sFlight Training CentreManager.

“It’s a great addition to our fleet of training and self flyhire aeroplanes and helicopters at Multiflight at LeedsBradford Airport. It now gives our helicopter flight training students the option of learning to fly in the Cabri or the Robinson R22 and R44.”

Safety is the helicopter pilot’s mainconcern and, due to this, the manu-facturer set a target when designingand testing the Cabri to a level thatwas before unknown in this category,looking at both passive and activesafety.The Cabri has an outstandingstability in a hover and in cruise: likehelicopters five times the size. UASCybAero’s Confirmation fromISP for exports to ChinaFirst North-listed CybAero has received a positivepreliminary decision from ISP (the Swedish Agencyfor Non-Proliferation and Export Controls) for itsapplication to export to a Chinese commercial end customer.

In July 2014, CybAerosigned a frameworkagreement with Chinesecompany AVIC for thedelivery of at least 70helicopter systems intotal within the next eight years. CybAero applied onSeptember 30 for an export license for the first 20 systems. On October 17, ISP announced that it rejectedthe application due to issues concerning where the first20 systems would be assembled and also concerningthe end user.

After holding talks with ISP, as well as clarifying and supplementing the information, CybAero requested anpreliminary decision from ISP in an application onOctober 24 for delivery of the first ten systems within thescope of the agreement with AVIC. “It is excellent thatwe have now received this positive preliminary decision.As a result, we can now begin making the first deliveriesunder the agreement with AVIC,” says CybAero’s CEOMikael Hult.

CybAero Completes Contractwith IndraCybAero has now delivered the last helicopter toSpanish IT group Indra. CybAero and Indra entered intoan agreement in 2009 thathas included helicoptersystems with the capabilityto take off and land fromships. More information visit -www.cybaero.se

ASSOCIATIONAUVSI names newPresident/CEO Brian Wynne has been named president and CEO ofthe Association for Unmanned Vehicle SystemsInternational, succeeding the retiring MichaelToscano on 12 Jan. 2015.

Wynne is currently president of the Electric DriveTransportation Association(EDTA), a post he has heldsince April 2004. The organization promotes battery,hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fuelcell electric vehicles and infrastructure.

“I am excited to be joining AUVSI at this pivotal time forthe unmanned systems and robotics industry,” Wynnesaid. “From unmanned aircraft to ground robots to maritime systems to automated vehicles, this industrywill continue to revolutionize our daily lives. The ARA Flugrettung recently became a member of the ICAR (International Commission for AlpineRescue). Thepurpose of theorganisation,which has 72members, is tofurther developalpine rescueand safety.

The unanimous decision to include the ARAFlugrettung was taken at the ICAR Conference in Lake Tahoe, USA, which was attended by the delegates from 33 countries. The ARA Flugrettung can contribute its know-how gained from over 10 years of practical experience at its Austrian HEMSbases in Reutte/Tyrol and Fresach/Carinthia to theICAR’s work.
