A Better Future With Entrepreneurship Culture

I am pleased to welcome and greet all participants and I am so glad to meet you all at this Summit held in Turkey, where we bring together entrepreneurs and investors, important representatives of the entrepreneurship ecosystem in a country where different cultures and dynamics come together.

As G20 YEA Turkey Presidency, at this year’s summit, we wished to evaluate the entrepreneurship culture with the major names in the world; in terms of what it means, why it is important and how it can be disseminated. And we intended to spread entrepreneurship more to world, improve the quality of initiatives and to move this perception beyond G20 borders.

The adoption of an entrepreneurship culture and internalization by future generations, is the basis for all steps to be taken for the development of this ecosystem. The way to create a greater number of qualified initiatives is preferably to make entrepreneurship a valid and respectful career choice. Career is shaped with discovering oneself from an early age, to reveal talents, to detect the targets and to have the required equipment. If we want entrepreneurship to be accepted and to be perceived as a career, we need to start with education and inoculation of entrepreneurial vision to young people at an early age.

In order to disregard stand still of the young initiatives we created and laid to foundation with education, we believe that it is invaluable to outreach, be active not only in the G20 region but also on an international level, observe the world and to keep learning from each other. At this point, on every possible platform, we emphasize the importance of the support that needs to be given to young business people for their mobility. We firmly believe that, this will lead to life long learning, support new collaborations, and creation of more world-wide brands. As TÜGİAD, just like we have been doing previously, we will keep working on to get the support for entrepreneurs in many aspects such as legislation, education, finance and many more. We and our friends from G20 YEA, with whom we have a common goal, will keep working for the policy development and to call leaders in order to create a better world for youth and entrepreneurs. I’d like to thank the term presidencies of G20 and B20 for their valuable support and collaboration in our preparation period for G20 YEA Turkey Summit. And I offer many thanks and my respect to our esteemed speakers, participants and partners for their support for entrepreneurship, which has a multiplier effect on business, labour, growth and added value, and being with us at our summit.

Entrepreneurship Against Unemployment

I welcome all the participants and contributors who came here from all around the world. All the participants are here in this summit today to discuss in detail the entrepreneurship concept which is a key point for global economic growth.

Across the world, the most dynamic individuals within earlystage entrepreneurial activity are in the age group of 25-35 years.

Due to the extremely high unemployment rate of young people in many economies (e.g., during 2013, in Bosnia and Herzegovina 60.4%, Greece 57%, Spain 54.9%, Croatia 48.7% and Italy 43%)2, it is not only an economic problem anymore, but a social and a political one that demands the primary attention to be solved.

We all know that, economic and labor market crisis has plagued the world since 2008. The labor market slowdown is dramatic with a current deficit of around 63 million jobs, in comparison to the pre-crisis situation (ILO, 2014).

The proportion of young unemployment in almost all geographic regions of the world increased and reached 74.5 million people between 2007-2013. In this situation we, as entrepreneurs are looking for proactive solutions. G20 members have committed to lifting our collective economic growth by an additional 2,1% over the next five years, which will bring an additional 2 trillion dollars to the world economy, equal to the size of the Indian economy. Implementation of our commitments is vital for the credibility of G20 and the future of global economy.

Entrepreneurship is the solution against unemployment. Entrepreneurs recognize, find and make opportunities. Entrepreneurial spirit is characterized by innovation and risk-taking, and is an essential part of a nation’s ability to succeed in an ever changing and increasingly competitive global marketplace.

In order to utilize the current dynamics of youth, we have to act together and have entrepreneurship as a compass.

G20 YEA Turkey Summit is a great opportunity to act together with young entrepreneurs.

I greet everybody who is a part of this summit and hope to have a successful organisation.

E Former Deputy Prime Minister Ali Babacan’s G20 Turkish Presidency Message

Our country has undertaken the Term Presidency of G20 platform as of December 1st, 2014. Surely this role is both a historic opportunity and an important responsibility for our country. Our works are meticulously continued in order to fulfill this important task in a most effective way and the success of these works depend contribution of all civil community as well as government institutions.

Hence, TÜGİAD will be an important contributor to our works within the context of G20 as a community of young businessmen which aims to support entrepreneurship, main source of growth and employment.Entrepreneurship has become even more important tool for restoring the dynamism during the recovery period after last global financial crisis. Our country has made significant progress in recent years in this regard with its young and growing population and strong entrepreneurship spirit. Entrepreneurship, located in the heart of our economic model, is essential for both SMEs to increase added value of their production and for big companies to renew themselves accordingly with changing market conditions.

I have full faith in the success of Young Entrepreneurs’ Alliance Summit where the problems of young entrepreneurs will be handled and possible solutions will be discussed under the leadership of TÜGİAD and with keen participation and valuable contribution of young entrepreneurs. In this wise, I wish success to TÜGİAD in the summit process and would like to indicate support of our G20 Presidency.

ETOBB President Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu’s B20 Turkish Term Presidency Message

Since it assumed the G20 Presidency in December 2014, Turkey has sought to take the summit in new and more inclusive directions. This has included preparing recommendations aimed at developed and developing countries alike, as well as creating a B20 taskforce specifically for small-and-medium-sized businesses (SMEs) and entrepreneurs. The B20, the business outreach group of the G20, has embraced the creation of such a taskforce, given just how critical SMEs and entrepreneurs are to the global economy. After all, SMEs now account for a majority of the global private sector workforce (roughly 66%), and entrepreneurs – now more than ever – represent the vanguard of innovation and economic progress. In today’s ever-changing business environment, the G20 and B20 simply cannot ignore these stakeholders.

In addition to developing recommendations for entrepreneurs and small businesses, the B20 is proud to support organizations critical to their success, such as TÜGİAD and the TOBB Young Entrepreneurs Council. As the president of TOBB, I give special importance to enhance the entrepreneurial spirit of young people. That’s why we established TOBB Young Entrepreneurs Council in 2009. From its establishment to this day, the Council has accessed over 8000 members all around Turkey, covering and supporting all related stakeholders.

Given the complex and difficult nature of entrepreneurship, these organizations are particularly valuable, as they supply young entrepreneurs with leadership training, networking opportunities, and other essential services. We also enthusiastically support the G20’s Young Entrepreneurs’ Alliance Summit, which will be held in September. It is our belief that the summit will give an invaluable platform to young entrepreneurs and businesspeople to express problems, examine solutions, and discuss the economic environment.

As we approach the Young Entrepreneurs’ Alliance Summit, the B20 would like to emphasize its support for the gathering. Together with the efforts of the G20 and B20, there is no doubt in my mind that the cause of SMEs and entrepreneurs will be advanced world-wide in 2015. And for that, I am truly excited.

Advanced globalization, fast development of communication technologies, diversification of funding sources: Entrepreneurship has evolved and took on different and new meanings. Institutions, businessmen, businesswomen and investors from all over the World gather in Istanbul to support young entrepreneurship.

anDreas stefanIDIs

Entrepreneurship is the new privileged meeting place of creativity, innovation, art, and science. Entrepreneurship is the force that can transform local communities and influence the social developments at European and Global level. Turkey in cooperation with Greece should become a Hub of Innovation and Entrepreneurial cooperation for the Eurasian territory.

amY Zalman

Cultivating entrepreneurship will be a crucial task for governments, existing businesses, and civil society in the coming years. Emerging technologies create tremendous opportunities to develop new products and new services, and to address some of the extreme challenges. Organizations like the World Future Society, and the activities they support, provide a crucial resource that, like capital and a strong social network, should be in every entrepreneur’s toolkit.

anDreas HeInecke

Dialogue in the Dark is based on a simple concept. It’s an exhibition in total darkness, where blind individuals take the lead. Dialogue in the Dark employed thousands of blind people and changed the mindset towards disability for millions. The session will give deeper insights in the dissemination of the Dialogue in the Dark idea, and explain the strengths and limits of the scaling strategy.

cem soYsal

The ability to keep on generating winning ideas for new products and services, innovative technologies are the keys to today’s business success. Entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial companies are well aware of this fact; their natural understanding of innovation is what makes them unique.

Entrepreneurs generate wealth by creating jobs, exploring new markets, re-inventing business practices and driving innovation. I expect the summit will be full of great insights on ways of doing business in different countries of the world.

DEMET SABANCI ÇETİNDOĞAN

Enterpreuners create the majority of the new jobs in Turkey as well as abroad. Therefore, this summit is important and essential. Turkish economy needs to get back on track.New ideas and new companies will be the locomotive of the Turkish economy.

DEMET ÖZDEMİR

One area where women have been on the march is in entrepreneurship – setting up and running their own businesses. At EY we believe strongly in the power and potential of women entrepreneurs. Turkey’s G20 YEA Summit is a unique arena to exchange the ideas and rich experiences for young entrepreneurs coming from all over the World.”

DesmonD mongwe

I will be attending the summit for the very first time, my main objective is to learn, network and find opportunities to collaborate with like minded other entrepreneurs, potential clients and partners. Can not wait to visit the city of Istanbul, the city that straddles Europe and Asia across the Bosphorus Strait. I am very much interested in learning more about the culture, lifestyle, history and most importantly the people of Turkey and their language.

DavID HalabIskY

With a high interest in self-employment, youth have great potential to start businesses but face barriers related to entrepreneurship skills and access to finance. Governments can help youth overcome these barriers with programmes that offer entrepreneurship training, mentoring and microcredit. This summit is an opportunity to identify and discuss the challenges faced by youth entrepreneurs in G20 countries and to share key success factors from policy approaches that have demonstrated success.

In an Era combining unprecedented challenges with unprecedented potential, entrepreneurship is the primary choice for the youth of the World to change their lives and to create a better, more open and fair society. The G20 Young Entrepreneurs Alliance makes sure that their voice is heard loudly and clearly to their respective heads of state, providing for coordinated action in putting together a more entrepreneurship-friendly economic and business environment.

Economic growth is one of the biggest challenges in the world and there is a high competition for foreign investment. Philip Morris / Sabancı is one of the best examples of foreign direct investments in Turkey. The challenges come with opportunities in Entrepreneurs, who play a critical role for economic and social growth, will find a dynamic country that supports their investment.

If I would be asked which is my second country, I would say: Turkey. I love the rich culture, the people, the entrepreneurial spirit and the vivacity of this country. Above all, the connection you have with the people from one country, can be defined as the most powerful richness and I feel very closely with the friends from Tugiad and the Turkish people.

francIs HIntermann

Digital Entrepreneurship is a major solution to create jobs across G20 countries. Some progress has been made in recent years, more measures are necessary to fully capture the whole benefits of the current Digital Disruption in the coming years. It’s my First time in Turkey and I am expecting to learn how Turkish entrepreneurs seize the benefits of the Digital Disruption.

As Einstein said”We cannot solve the difficult problems that we get face to face by using our mind sets, because these problems are the products of those mind sets. In this sense, in order to solve the prevailing problems, we need global platforms, which cultivate new and sustainable solutions.

İSMAİL HAZNEDAR

Turkey is leading example of partnership among government, business and civil society for building a strong entrepreneurship ecosystem. G20YEA Summit hosted in Istanbul, will bring more opportunities to share, learn and grow together.

“As the host of the G20 YEA Summit last year Australia is acutely aware of the immense responsibility and opportunity the G20 YEA Summit 2015 presents for Turkey and TU-GIAD. We are delighted to see such important engagement and endorsement from the G20, Turkish Government and B20 this year. Entrepreneurship culture and mindset is a founda-tion of any thriving ecosystem and we hope to see this infused in the global conversation about sustainable growth and job creation.

JoacHIm beHrenDt

It is a big honor to host this year’s summit in Istanbul, the center of the Turkish entrepreneurial ecosystem. Turkey has huge potential for entrepreneurial activities because of it’s young population and developing economy. Another upside of Turkey is Turkish entrepreneurs know how to manage difficulties, because they are working under tough conditions.

I believe that this is the best time to become an entrepreneurs because of three reasons, mobile revolution, expanding global consumers with more disposable income and global mobility for business. G20 Young Entrepreneurs Summit provides unique opportunity for various stakeholders, to share ideas and develop framework for sustainable innovation eco system. Turkey has been at cross roads between West and emerging countries. Cultural melting pot can be a great case study for global business.

Joan vogelesang

Societies are moved forward by entrepreneurs employing 10 people or less. These are the organisations that generate net new jobs, creating wealth and a growing middle class. These are the companies that ultimately grow into the larger successes of the modern age. Turkey is well positioned with a well educated young work force and , well situated geographically ,to take advantage of global opportunities and needs. This summit is a great launching pad for these discussions.

Here I am able to share with the audience the knowledge and experienced gather by running a service business internationally while also learning from other participants and the introspection required from the audience. Get to know people from multiple countries and their thoughts on e-ship, get to know (for the first time) Turkey, their culture, their people.I have never been to Turkey so I am overly excited to finally be there.

Entrepreneurship is synonymous with digital innovation which is a significant opportunity today for both small and large companies. Realizing the visions of G20 entrepreneurs on the future of digital innovation, and garnering their experiences on the journey to open innovation particularly collaboration with large companies.

Entrepreneurship = Digital Innovation = Job creation. The rewards of getting digital collaboration and innovation right are considerable! G20 YEA Turkey Summit will help Connect, Contribute, Collaborate and Champion the Culture of EntrepreneurshipTurkey is a Crossroads and contrasts.

Education is the most powerful weapon to change the world”, Nelson Mandela said. And so is entrepreneurship, for us. Moreover, for each and every member of the G20 YEA, entrepreneurship is a mean to work together side by side– sharing the same passion in carrying on an enterprise every day.. Over the years I joined many G20YEA Summits and this year I am excited to be in Istanbul, one of the most vibrant capitals in the world.

Entrepreneurship can break the cycle of poverty and violence in poor and fragile countries. Youth in conflict-affected regions have the talent, the ideas, and the solutions to address the problems they face through entrepreneurship. The G20 YEA summit in Istanbul this year will provide an amazing platform to do this.

mustafa k. YIlmaZ

Recent global developments clearly show that more orchestrated efforts are urgently needed in supporting entrepreneurs to access to capital. Investments, in turn, lead to innovation, growth of companies and creation of new job opportunities all are crucial for the sustainable growth. We, as Borsa Istanbul, believe that organized Stock Exchanges may contribute a lot in channeling funds through private markets.

mustafa baklan

There is a need to brave and qualified entrepreneurs besides innovative and international companies in the fields of such as passing to digital life, sustainable growth and globalization. While providing an opportunity for participant from all around the world to get to know Turkey and its investment opportunities, this Istanbul Summit will also be a platform for Turkish participants to outreach.

“When it comes to entrepreneurship there is a bigger purpose than just personal success. Entrepreneurship is the most effective tool for economic development and job creation for any country; and digital entrepreneurship is the closest thing to being a modern frontier.. I cannot be any prouder to be an inspirational story and share it in G20 YEA Summit for all the upcoming entrepreneur stars of this country Let’s embrace the energy and vision of Turkey’s talent pool to build a brighter, better, stronger, and more inclusive future!”

numan ÖZcan

As the Director of the ILO Office for Tukey, I believe that G20 Youth Entrepreneurs’ Alliance (G20 YEA) Summit in Turkey will make significant contributions to global and national policy discussions on critical elements of enabling environment and proper ecosystem for increasing youth entrepreneurship Coherent and well-targeted entrepreneurship policies can help reduce youth unemployment, which has been persistently high since the recent global economic and financial crisis.

Enlightening young people through sharing the experience and knowledge is one of our responsibilities because our future depends on their vision since they are the leaders of tomorrow. I wish the event a great success, and all guests and participants have a most valuable time in Istanbul.

Increasing the number of entrepreneurs is one factor but improving the quality of entrepreneurs in order to increase the success rate is equally important. Here, we are talking about the success of early stage start ups, the upscaling of SMEs and their globalisation. This is why, this summit is important to recognise that economic growth also lies in the leader - an individual. Growth does not come from the markets, but from the leaders.

ranDY wIllIams

Supporting and providing finance for entrepreneurs benefits regional economies throughout the world. Our members unselfishly give their time, resources, and help to start ups, and share their contacts and aspiring companies with all of our members. This is a win/win for everyone. Angel investors are getting younger, and it is inspirational to work with the young founders like those who are at the Summit. I expect to benefit greatly from the intellectual capital at the Summit in Turkey this week.

Paulo anDreZ

While some wait for a better future, many young people around the world are creating not only their future, but the future of mankind. During the G20 YEA Turkey Summit, we will foster the future together!
