Are you excited for...

It seems that there is a visitor among us, Queen Ohiva, the ruler of planet Oberon has put togeth-er several creative contests for Sci-Fi week. You can read her welcome and introduction message

on the forums. Here are the facts that you need to know:

Galactic Art ContestIf you can draw, paint, colour, or Photoshop, this is the contest for you. Create a piece of artwork

that consists of Space and Minecraft themes. Extra points if you incorporate Matt/Phil. This contest is submission per person. This means you may get help from another person but the recognition and prize will only be awarded to the person submitting the Art. No art can be stolen from copyrighted material. Everything MUST be original. Any artwork you submit should be no less than 500 x 500 pixels

Once you have completed your artwork, you need to start a conversation with Bunny™, Spherefs, and Phil with your artwork. Label the conversation as “Art Space Submission.”

The two winners will receive a special signature for the forums. They will also be featured in the Creations video. Their artwork will also be a part of the paintings to be used in our Oberon Space Texturepack.

Comic ContestIf you are creative, then this is the contest for you. It’s simple and will be a lot of fun to see what

everyone comes up with. It won’t take you much time to do, and you can win some cool prizes!

We will provide an empty comic. You must fill it in with your own words. Upload it and send it in a conversation with Bunny™, Spherefs, and Phil. Label the conversation as

“Comic Contest”. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact Bunny™ or Spherefs for any questions.

All of the submissions will be released to the public together for everyone to vote! After the winners are announce, first place will be awarded an optional TF2 item and a special signature for the forums.

View the empty comic here. It can be about anything from inside jokes, FyreUK, Minecraft, Matt/Phil, etc.

Trivia ContestThis next contest is a Trivia live on Teamspeak. You do not need a microphone so everyone can

participate. This is how the contest works. Everyone in the channel is muted except for the trivia contest leaders. They will take turns asking a Sci-Fi related questions and the first to type the correct answer in the chat, will win a prize. The prizes range from Steam Games to TF2 items.

The prize will be announced before each question is asked. If youReceive a prize you do not want, you may trade with another winner.

ANSWErS mUST bE SPELLED COrrECTLy.When it comes to typing answers in chat, Upper Case/lower case does not matter unless the

asker of the question starts the question with “Write the answer cased correctly”. The questions will be randomness from really easy to difficult. Yes, you may search for the answer on Google, but you better try to as fast as you can and then write the answer on Teamspeak chat. Some of you may know the answer from the top of your head and some of you will not.

I guess we shall see, Good luck!

Throughout Sci-Fi Week we at FyreUK are going to be hosting a number of competitions you can get involved in. This page will hold all of the information you will need to take part in these competitions. Non-server members will be able to enter 3 out of 4 competitions as one of them is a build competition to build a spaceship. Server members who wish to get involved in the build competition should check out the forum thread located in member chat.

Kerbal Space Program by Nathanboyd

KSP is a must play game for any science fiction fan, or really anyone interested in the final frontier. To view more and purchase...

TO THE mUN AND bACKWhether you want to orbit the earth-like planet of Kerbin, go to

Mun (Moon), or slingshot yourself around Kerbol the red dwarf star, just go ahead and try. Regardless of your decision, if you desire an epic feeling and want to accomplish something only movie makers and space agencies do, Kerbal Space Program is the game for you.

Kerbal Space Program (KSP) is a game where you can create, manage, and fly your own spacecraft in hopes of conquering space. Currently the game is still in its alpha stage so it’s still adding new features to the game, but that shouldn’t stop you. The game is a blast and a joy to any science lover. The building aspect of the game reminds me a bit of the game Spore, when it comes to putting pieces together to make a functional space craft. As you explore the game you learn about new things, such as how to build additions to improve your rocket, and discover new places and challenges.

The game doesn’t end with just rockets; it also has the feature of space planes. Space planes are much more difficult to work than rockets, but are still a joy to play around with. If you haven’t already noticed yet, Matt (iFirez) has already started a series for KSP and it is quite the joy to watch him fail epicly on some attempts, and occasionally succeed. When it comes to space planes however, with Matt it is a nonstop comedy act. I continuously cracked up during

most of his space plane video, as I watched multiple planes burst into flames and explode.

Overall, I think KSP is fun and enjoyable in a numerous amount of ways, and I encourage everyone to play it. With community mods, and further updates the possibilities are practically endless. Whether you are simply orbiting a planet, ejecting helpless kerbals into space, or achieving the great goal of landing on the moon or other planets, KSP always delivers. I mean come on, how hard could rocket science be anyway?

LATEST AND UPCOmING SCI-FI mOVIES

UPCOmING SCI-FI VIDEO GAmES

Science Fiction, one of the greatest genres of entertainment. Sci-Fi can be interesting to kids from Hong Kong to Eskimos in Northern Canada. I might be exaggerating a bit, but my point is Sci-Fi is awesome. Hopefully we all know the classics like Alien, Jurassic Park, and James Cameron’s Avatar, but do you know of the recent and upcoming Science Fiction movies? If not, I’m here to run down the few I’m most excited for.

First off, the latest movies that you should have seen. Hunger games a book that inspired a movie and a super fun minecraft mod, is a story that takes place in a dystopian post-apocalyptic future in the nation of Panem, where twelve boys and twelve girls must participate in the Hunger Games, a televised annual event in which the “tributes” are required to fight to the death until there is one remaining victor. Hunger Games was in theatres in March, early this year and is out on DVD now.

In May of this year was the third instalment of the Men in Black series. As a beloved fan of the series, this is probably my favourite Sci-Fi movie of the year, so far. For those who haven’t seen it, the plot is about a villain named Boris the Animal, he escapes from a prison on the moon and is out for revenge. Boris intends to go back in time and kill Agent K, who on July 16th, 1969 shot off bori’s arm and sent him packing to the moon.. This movie is a must watch, and if you haven’t seen any movie in these series, I really question what you are doing with your life. Men in Black 3 will be out on blu-ray and DVD in November.

STOry by: benwyn Twitter: @benwyn Email: [email protected]

Probably the most popular Sci-Fi movie this year has been Prometheus, the prequel to Alien, one of the most popular movies in Sci-Fi history. If you haven’t seen this movie, again I question your life goals and suggest you change something. The plot for Prometheus is about a team of explorers that discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race. I wouldn’t say it is as good as the original Alien series, but it is a really good Sci-Fi movie.

Soon to be released on the 28th of September, Looper looks to be an interesting Sci-Fi movie. In 2072, when the mob wants to get rid of someone, the target is sent 30 years into the past, where a hired gun awaits. Unfortunately for the main character Joe, who one day learns the mob wants to ‘close the loop’ by transporting back Joe’s future self. Stars include Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis and Emily Blunt and is being directed by Rian Johnson.

Dead Space and Mass Effect are rumoured to make the big screen debut sometime early to mid 2013. According to the FAQ posted by Legendary, the Mass Effect film will “focus on Commander Shepard’s journey, centring around the story of the original Mass Effect game.” All information i’ve found about these two movies are only rumors and they could turn out to be yet another case of video games failing to make it in Hollywood.

There are no upcoming Sci-Fi video games. Haha funny joke right? If there were no new Sci-Fi games, the industry would die. There are so many Sci-Fi games coming out for this holiday season and into early 2013 it’s a bit ridiculous. My most anticipated Science Fiction games are as follows: Star Wars 1313, Watch Dogs, The Last of Us, Borderlands 2, and Resident Evil 6. All of these games look awesome and I’m sure you think likewise. Other Sci-Fi games coming out soon are Call of Duty Black Ops 2, Dishonored, Lost Planet 3, Crysis 3, Dead Space 3, Metal Gear Rising, Revengeance, Halo 4, Gears of War: Judgement, Star Trek: The Game, Star Wars: The Clone Wars Adventures, PlanetSide 2, Metro Last Light, Defiance, and End of Nations. Quite a bit right? It looks like we will have our Sci-Fi fix for months and months to come. So what Sci-Fi games are you most excited to get your hands on? Send a mail to [email protected]! Have fun and enjoy Sci-Fi week!

We are in an exciting time in science, the things we thought were fiction are being done and the feats we thought impossible, are being accomplished. There are all sorts of amazing things being done in the fields of science, medicine and technology; I will try to provide you with some of my favourite.

The biggest real life science fiction development in the last month is NASA’s Curiosity rover and its journey across Mars. Everything about this mission is amazing and straight out of what seems to be a science fiction novel. Mars Science Laboratory or MSL arrived at its destination Sunday August 5th at 10:31 p.m. Pacific Time. The team at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s control center in Pasadena was ecstatic; the mission control room was flooded with movie-like jubilant pandemonium. And why wouldn’t they be? What

they achieved was nothing short of amazing and pride, that is not shared for only one country, but for science.

Let me break down how amazing this landing was… It first had to fly 350 million miles to the red planet. After separating from its cruise stage it had to de-spin, and point itself accurately toward the Mars atmosphere for the heat shield so the rover wouldn’t burn up. After the entry into Mar’s atmosphere it deployed a massive supersonic parachute which unfortunately, is not enough to slow down this beast from crashing into the mars surface. Since curiosity was deemed too heavy for the normal air bag landing, it used a new landing system which includes eight thruster rockets and a sky crane to lower it to the ground. It did all of this in what is called the “seven minutes of hell” which means it was doing this completely on its own.

Despite all those engineering and technological challenges, Mars’ new rover landed only 2.4km (1.5 miles) off the intended landing spot, out of 563.2 million km (350 million miles), that’s not too shabby. “Today, the wheels of Curiosity have begun to blaze the trail for human footprints on Mars,” declared NASA Administrator Charles Bolden. “Curiosity, the most sophisticated rover ever built, is now on the surface of the Red Planet, where it will seek to answer age-old questions about whether life ever existed on Mars -- or if the planet can sustain life in the future,” Now that it’s safely on the ground, the $2.5 billion, 899kg (1,980 ib) rover will spend two earth years studying the climate and geology of Mars. Curiosity has several amazing tools to do this. Curiosity has a Laser shooting ChemCam, several high definition cameras for video and still HD footage, Meteorologi-cal and Radiation sensors and much, much more. NASA has six main goals for

Curiosity to accomplish in its two years of service on Mars: 1. Determine the mineralogical composition of the Martian surface and near-surface geological materials. 2. Attempt to detect chemical building blocks of life (bio signatures). 3. Interpret the processes that have formed and modified rocks and soils. 4. Assess long-timescale (i.e., 4-billion-year) Martian atmospheric evolution processes. 5. Determine present state, distribution, and cycling of water and carbon dioxide. 6. Characterize the broad spectrum of surface radiation, including galactic radiation, cosmic radiation, solar proton events and secondary neutrons. There is so much to learn from this sister planet of ours, and I can guarantee there will be a lot of learning and inspiring done over these next two years and even much longer than that. You can view further information at the Curiosity website. Or play the video game on Xbox 360!

Google is rumoured to have a secret facility code named Google X where they work on what seems like impossible science fiction inventions. Officially, Google states that this project is dedicated to solving the world’s biggest problems, and I for one can’t wait and see what those solutions are. Here are three projects derived from the rumoured Google X Lab:

Google’s Driverless Car News came out August 9th that the impressive Google driverless car reached 300,000 logged miles without a single accident. The project is currently being led by Google engineer Sebastian Thrun, director of the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and co-inventor of Google Street View. The goal of this project is to cut down the number of automobile related deaths by at least half. Unfortunately, this technology is still years away from any commercial use due to a lot of legal and ethical discussions. Questions like, “How well must these vehicles ultimately perform? Perfectly? “How do we measure this?” And possibly the hardest question of all, “How will we make these decisions? And who will make them?”

Project Glass If you thought that was all from Google, you’re oh so wrong. Project Glass, is a research and development program by Google to develop an augmented reality head-mounted display. The intended purpose is to have smart phones use this technology for a hands free display of information. Project Glass is expected to be released in late 2013 with a rumoured

price of $1,500.Space Elevator

The most interesting and far rumoured project that Google is working on is a Space Elevator. That’s right, Google may be working on a type of space transportation using a ribbon-like cable anchored to the surface and extending into space.

There is a new space race in the world and it is between two emerging space travel companies. Ever since NASA retired its space shuttles, the federal space agency has been working on privatizing it’s space travelling efforts, for itself and for the general public. The major aim of the commercial crewed spaceflight program is to end NASA outsourcing of human spaceflight and create high-paying jobs across the country, says NASA chief Charles Bolden. Currently, NASA must buy seats to the International Space Station from its space race arch rival, Russia. Each company is working on several different prototypes to get NASA and commercial flights achieved by at least the year 2017. SpaceX currently has successfully landed and docked its Dragon cargo capsule at the space station in May. Boeing was granted $460 million by NASA and has worked with the agency since the Apollo moon program.

I can’t believe it’s been over a month since we started the Fyre-lympics. It’s the most fun we have had as a full server in a long time. Almost everyone joined in and got involved. The Trusted, Veterans, and even the new Sponsors and Builders were all brought down to the same level, and everyone worked together to try and beat the opposing teams. Very quickly people stayed true to their teams, with everyone changing their skins to suit, soon raising the feel of competition, and the determination to come out on top. It really showed the past friendships that have grown, and a glimpse of the developing FyreUK community, and where it may lead in the future.

In the last moments leading up to our Opening Ceremony, as with FyreUK tradition, the village was still being built. People arriving were asked to help finish the team buildings, and joined the team that suited the colour of their Minecraft skin, with some making tweaks to suit (or just having one block of colour as their whole body). Once everyone was in their teams, we all gathered in the stadium, where there were speeches, music, pretty much lots of noise. And fireworks, lots of fireworks. Then the games began.

The games launched with a quick and rather simple maze, just to warm us into the competition. Quite intuitively, the maze was underground, so those who tried to look at the dynamic map didn’t get anywhere faster, you sneaky people. Afterwards, we had a difficult build contest ahead of us. For those that didn’t make it, we had 8 assigned blocks, and each team was allowed to choose a ninth, and we had to build the best winter theme build we could, within an hour, with just those nine blocks. Easy, right? No. It was fair enough with the landscape, the typical snow, ice, wood and leaves, but once it came to interiors for example, we had no blocks that we could use. So the build itself was good, but those finishing touches were missing. An excellent challenge all-in-all, as it required good communication, and co-ordina-tion, as 1 hour isn’t that much time with the small teams we all had.

In my opinion, the best and most fun I had, keeping to the Olym-pic theme, was the kayak course. Not only was the course challenging and treacherous, but the rules were laid out in such a way, and the referees were incredibly organised, everyone seemed to have great fun. There were cool highlights such as Blundingen getting stuck on two rocks, but still managing to get down to the bottom with a boat, and Holmfastr getting stuck in the water trap, and amazingly, after 20 minutes perseverance, made it out and to the end of the course!

Overall it was a great laugh, especially when everyone went down the course at once, and the mayhem isn’t something to miss.

The last game of the Fyre-lympics was ‘Push the Minecart’, largely similar and based off of Payload in Team Fortress 2, where each team had to push their respective Minecart from one side of the course to the other. From a forest, to up a hill, scaling the side of a huge tree, then finally falling to a snow covered village, with the first getting to the end being the winners. It was great fun, even on both nights, with or without mobs. It was essential to balance and work as a team, and was very rewarding to do so, and was an excellent finish to the games of the Fyre-lympics. To be honest, I think it would be great to carry on playing this game as a community, as everyone loved it that much, and it would be a shame to have to let it go as a one-time game.

The Closing Ceremony was the final night and the final get to-gether in the first ever Fyre-lympic games. Matt led the announcements of the team finishing, with Red team winning, Yellow team coming a very close second place (only 5 points!), and Blue team finishing in third. That’s all I’m going to say on the subject of winners, because, at the end of it, I had so much fun, as I’m guessing all of you guys as well, that at the end I didn’t really care who won, or who came last. I loved every minute I was there. So I’d like to thank Bunny, and all of the referees, builders and the ones who helped in any way possible on behalf of the server. Everyone did an awesome job. I know it’s mushy and cheesy, but it couldn’t have happened without any of you guys who participated. Re-ally. If you weren’t there then how would have we have the competition and the spirit behind the Fyre-lympic games? If it weren’t for you then how would it have ever happened? In the end, FyreUK showed us all to be an amazing server to host a Fyre-lympic games, and the participants around the world can now put their hopes towards a heavy medal on their forum profile in the next Fyre-lympics.

The Opening Ceremony

Continuing the tradition, the time for the host nation to show its might and cultural history is during the opening ceremony. This is certain to be worth a watch since the new host country will try to make a better performance than the opening ceremony from the last Olympic Games. In other words: China’s amazing and colourful opening ceremony was in the back of the minds of the 1 billion people who gathered in front of TV-screens across the world at 9pm GMT on the 27th of July.

I would be lying to you if I said I wasn’t impressed when giant factories rose from the ground of the Olympic stadium and that Great Britain lined up 1 mega star after the other from both the music background, as well as the computer world. I’m of course speaking of the inventor of the world wide web Tim Berners-Lee, who had a short, but note worthy appearance.

Some of the other big opening ceremony moments that require mentioning was the nurses from NHS (National Health Service), a rather unexpected stunt from the queen when she jumped out of a helicopter escorted by James Bond, a hilarious sketch by one of Britain’s biggest comedians Rowan Atkinson, the final music performance by Paul McCartney, and of course the entrance of the Olympic flame. This year held a symbolic ceremony, where the flame was handed off to the new generation, which is to be inspired by London 2012.

With a little help from my friends

The many volunteers during the Olympics were not hard to spot. They all had the matching official outfits as well as a matching attitude towards everyone. As it was mentioned several times in the speeches, the volunteers at London 2012 was a large part of the bearing pillars and the good mood both when you were in the Olympic Park, and at the Olympic Village, where the athletes live during the Games. Not everyone knows how the athletes live in the Olympic Village since the security is strict and not much is leaked out. For all you gammers out there, I managed to get in, and see how some athletes spend their time off.

Gaming paradise

Though you might not expect many athletes to be hard core gammers, London 2012’s Olympic Village still came with two areas I would consider to be a paradise.

First of all, due to the many athletes coming from all over the world, the canteen they all dine in can fit no less than 880 double decker busses and it contains food from all kitchens of the world. You can have some Indian curry dish for starters, an African goat for main course and the dessert can be obtained from a third continent. Along with Indian, Asian, American, African and British cuisines, the canteen even had its own McDonald’s, which, despite the full menu being available, was mostly used for coffee, or so it seemed.

The second part of paradise is the relaxing/gaming area, where the athletes have their own building, containing an outdoor lounge with live music playing, an indoor bar with pool tables and rows of Wiis, Xboxes, and PS3s lined up to be used for entertaining along with other smaller platforms for the lounge area. Who could want more than that?

3, 2, 1, GO! ... and stop!

Everyone was talking about it, everyone was waiting for it, and in less than 10 seconds it was over. Yes, you guessed it. The men’s 100 meter finals with the big question: Is Usain Bolt still as fast as lightning or has his teammate Yohan Blake “The Beast” what it takes to bring the excitement of this final, when the fastest person alive is found.

Millions of people held their breath for the 9.63 it took Usain Bolt to get from the starting box to the finish line just to once again claim his title as Olympic Champion.

In the end, London showed the world to be an amazing host of the Olympics 2012, and athletes around the world can now put their hopes towards a heavy medal around their necks in Rio de Jainero 2016.

London was a great success, for gamers and athletes“London 2012, Inspire a generation.” Those words have been said thousands of times during this sum-

mer, and London 2012 has indeed been inspiring for many people with the gathering of the best athletes from all across the world. With millions of new people coming to London and billions watching the Olympic Games, London has showed the world why the city, and the nation of England is still a popular travel destination with a big past and big developments.

For this first edition of Playing with Fyre series, I play Guild Wars 2 with a bunch of Fyreflies including Matt and Phil. For those who have not noticed me around the digital office, I’ve been busy being addicted to ArenaNet’s latest addition to its Guild Wars series. Anyone who hasn’t been under a rock should know this latest and greatest MMO. You get to fight the hordes of enemies with friends and strangers all over the lands of Tyria. I’m not here to give a review of the game though, I’m here to discuss why should you all play it, as I have, with the FyreUK community.

Guild Wars 2 is built ground up on playing with friends and really anyone you come across. Whether it be renowned hearts, skill point challenges or a random boss event that takes a 40 man team ages to

get down. You are basically forced to interact and level up with other players. During the 3 day headstart access, Phil, Matt and I all started characters and began our journey to save Tyria. Matt and I being Sylvari, and Phil being a Norn, the beast from the North.

Into the early hours of morning we worked together to slay Undead, as well as the occasional bunny, deer, and yes Phil took out a few pigs. Since the launch of Guild Wars 2, we have enjoyed each other’s company and grew the friendship we have even more. I’ve also gotten the amazing chance to play with Egg_Manz and Frohtastic. The five of us started the official Guild Wars 2 FyreUK guild and anyone who is looking to play Guild Wars 2 is welcome to join us. We are on the EU server named Gunnar’s Hold. matt gives away - Darksiders 2

Can you feel it? The trembling air? The deep howling that seems to come from hell itself? yES, Darksiders 2 is here. An amazing sequel to a brilliant game, Darksiders 1! matt called this game one of his “hotly anticipated games of 2012” and this is the reason that he gave away 5 copies on steam. Sadly the give-away has expired already, but you can still watch matt playing through a section of Darksiders 1, something that is always worth watching!

A long time ago, three heroes went to conquer the quests of a mysterious man known as the Overseer, which will lead them on a path to fame and glory!

Have you ever wondered how these massive and imposing areas where made? We of the FyreUK server created a Timelapse to show you how we build them. This is the fourth Timelapse of the Adventure map and features a snow covered cabin, a watch tower and a village built around a great tower.
