Depth refers to level of development - a baboon is deeper than a ladybug, which is deeper than an amoeba.

Span refers to the number of beings affected, regardless of their level of development - as in the utilitarian principle of “the greatest good for the greatest number. This is egalitarian, but does not consider the crucial dimension of depth.

Integral Ethics combines egalitarianism with due regard for development.

Thus, an Integral approach to eating is a way of eating that contributes to the healthiest, deepest food for the greatest span, which includes all species, not just human beings.
