Quantum computers A quantum computer is a computer that makes direct use

of distinctively quantum mechanical phenomena to perform operations on data.

Data is measured by qubits.

Quantum properties of particles can be used to represent and structure data, and quantum mechanisms can be devised and built to perform operations with these data.

neutral or chargeless atoms, trapped like individual eggs in an egg carton by a lattice created by interfering laser beams and super cooled to the point of zero motion, will work for quantum computing. Contd…

Replacing transistors with single atoms.

Quantum computer, allows you to enter all possible inputs at one time and perform all the corresponding computations in parallel.

Quantum computer would simultaneously carry out a number of computations equal to two to the power of the number of input bits

Solve a number of problems conventional computers cannot.

It can be used to crack secret codes or to communicate information more securely .

Nano Computers Nanotechnology is the process whereby matter is manipulated

at the atomic level, providing the ability to “build” objects from their most basic parts.

November 1st, 2011 that's the day Nanocomputer Dream Team unveil a revolutionary kind of computer, the most powerful ever seen.

It will be used to control simple molecular construction machines, which can then build more complex molecular devices, ultimately giving complete control of the molecular world.

Immensely difficult problem of physically piecing together molecular structures.

Massive calculations are required to determine if particular molecular configurations are even possible.

Already in use in many places, providing everything from stain resistant clothing to better suntan lotion.

DNA Computers

Use DNA to store information and perform complex calculations.

Vast amount of storage capacity.e.g a single gram of DNA can hold as much information as

one trillion compact discs. Dr. Leonard Adleman has shown that DNA can be used

to solve complex mathematical problems used for the first time to find the only correct answer from

over a million possible solutions to some computational problems.

Optical Computers The computers we use today use transistors and

semiconductors to control electricity. Computers of the future may utilize crystals and metamaterials to control light.

Optical computers make use of light particles called photons.

Electrons travel between transistor switches on metal wires or traces to gather, process and store information. The optical computers of the future will instead use photons traveling on optical fibers or thin films to perform these functions.

The speed of computers becomes a pressing problem as electronic circuits reach their maximum limit in network communications.

"What we are accomplishing in the lab today will result in development of super-fast, super-miniaturized, super-lightweight and lower cost optical computing and optical communication devices and systems," - Dr. Donald Frazier (NASA scientist)
