The Top Ten Things to do at Muslim Funfest 2011

The Camel: An Amazing Creation of Allah

Here are some tips on how to make your day at the region’s largest annual Mus-lim carnival a truly blessed and reward-ing day for you and for your loved ones. Keep these things in mind and we will really enjoy and appreciate our beautiful way of life – Islam !

#1 Be Patient, Patient, PatientAllah describes the people who are truly conscious of Him as those “who spend [in the cause of Allah ] during ease and hardship and who restrain an-ger and who pardon the people” [Ali-Imran:134]. So, if you have to stand in a long line at Muslim Funfest, instead of getting upset and complaining, take the time to remember Allah, thank Him, and begin listing all His favors upon you in your mind. You can be sure your turn will come and you won’t be fin-ished counting Allah’s favors ! Be pa-tient, because there is always someone

facing more challenges than you.

#2 Spread the SalamOn the authority of Abu Hurayrah(May Allah be pleased with him) it is related that the Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: “I swear by the one in whose hand lies my soul that you will not enter paradise until you believe. “Alhumdulillah, I found Honeyderm’s Dermatonic-P, and it is really, really a blessing for people with Eczema or other skin illnesses. I no longer wake up sweating at night! Allahu-Akbar!.” -- Br.Hasan, Maryland

Every Muslim has read that the Prophet Sallallahu ‘alyhi wa sallam told his ummah about the wonderful nature of honey. In the Qur’an in Surah An-Nahl, Allah described honey as a “drink of varying color wherein is healing for men”.

Its no wonder that scientists are spending more and more resources examining, testing, and developing honey-based medical treatments. As early as December 26, 2007, the Associated Press ran a story titled “Honey makes medical comeback”.

One company that has believed in the restorative power of honey for a long time is HoneyDerm, Inc., a Lansing, Michigan based company that spent years bringing the healing power of honey to people suffering from hair loss, dandruff, and skin disease.

Their most famous product line is Hairback Lotion and Hairtonix Shampoo, that “helps stimulate new hair growth and thicken existing hair”. Honeyderm, Inc also claims the products solve dandruff and scalp psoriasis.

The Muslim Link requested access to some of Honeyderm’s customers, and Brother Mahmoud from Honeyderm gladly offered us some phone numbers.

Brother Hasan, in his late 30’s is from Maryland and suffers from the common skin disease eczema. “I’ve had eczema

since high school, and it got worse as the years went on. I went to a dermatologist and he recommended a cortisone-type prescription cream. It did stop the itch, but my skin was still dry and tight. I’ve tried lotions and shampoos from Aveeno, Lubiderm, Vaseline, and others. Alhumdulillah, I found Honeyderm’s Dermatonic-P, and it is really, really a blessing for people with Eczema or other skin illnesses. I no longer wake up sweating at night! Allahu-Akbar!.”

We called Abdurihman Khalil from Chicago. He did not know we were going to call. Abdurihman started losing his hair when he was about 28. He discovered the Hairback product line at a convention and decided to test its claims. “The hair loss stopped completely,” said Abdurihman. “It’s excellent, and I’ve been using it now for 6 years.”

We also called Brother Mustafa Al-Omary in Sterling Heights, Michigan. He decided to do something about his thinning hair at age 40 and tried the Hairback treatment. Asked how long it took for him to see results, he told us “Oh gosh, less than a month. My thin spots filled in within 3 months,.” He said he would “absolutely” recommend the product to anyone. “It’s not a fly-by-night product, its awesome,” said Mustafa.

We also called Najeebudheen Appat, a 30-year old living in

Los Angeles, CA. He’s had a severe dandruff

problem for a long-time, and had been searching for a solution. “I tried so many different products like tonics and shampoos, I can’t even remember them all, until I found this product around 2002. My problem was solved completely, the entire thing is taken care of. I even called [Honeyderm] with the great feedback,” recalled Najeebudheen. He told us that Allah creates shifa in many things, and Honeyderm’s products are a part of that. “For dandruff problems, this is the total solution,” he told us from his mobile phone.

On Honeyderm’s website, there are many more testimonials from Muslims and non-Muslims from around the nation and the world. There is also a gallery of “before and after” pictures of both hair loss treatments as well as skin treatments. And best of all, for those of us who’ve “tried it all”, there is a full money back guarantee.

Allah said honey heals. The Prophet Sallallahu’alyhi wa sallam said honey heals. The people we called said honey heals. With a money back guarantee, there is absolutely nothing to lose, and everything to gain – your hair and skin!

Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhe wa sallam) is an example for the Muslim to follow in every aspect of life, as it is mentioned in the by Allah the almighty in the Quran

“In the Messenger of Allah is a good ex-ample for you to follow.” [Quran 33:21].

Even in joking and having a good sense of humor Rasulullah has set an example for us.

The Prophet (sallallahu alayhe wa sal-lam) used to joke, but he never said anything but the truth in his jokes. The Sahabah took the same approach to hu-mor. There are many delightful reports about the jokes exchanged between the Prophet and the Sahabah.

Among the stories related in the books of hadith and sirah is the report that the Prophet used to joke with the small child of one of the Sahabah, a boy called Abu ‘Umayr, who had a small bird he used to play with.

One day he saw the child looking sad,

so he said, “Why do I see Abu ‘Umayr looking sad?” The Sahabah told him, “The nughar [a small bird, like a spar-row - author] which he used to play with has died, O Messenger of Allah.”

The Prophet (sallallahu `alayhi wa sal-lam) began to gently joke with the child, saying, “O Abu Umayr, what happened to the nughayr?” [Nughayr: diminutive of nughar. - author. In Arabic, this is a play on words, because of the rhyme between the boy’s name and that of the bird. - Translator. This story was report-ed in Hayat al-Sahabah, 3/149]

A man came to the Prophet (sallallahu alayhe wa sallam) to ask him to give him

a beast to ride. The Prophet jokingly told him, “I will give you the offspring of a she-camel to ride.” He said, “O Mes-senger of Allah , what will I do with the offspring of a she-camel?” The Prophet said: “Are riding-camels born except from she-camels?” [Reported by Imaam Ahmad, Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi, with a Sahih isnad.]

Imam Ahmad Bin Hanbal reported from Anas (radhiallahu `anhu) that there was a man from the desert people whose name was Zahir. He used to bring gifts from the desert to the Prophet (sallal-lahu alayhe wa sallam) , and in return the Prophet would provide him with whatever he needed when he went out

to fight. The Prophet (sallallahu alayhe wa sallam) said, “Zahir is our man of the desert, and we are his town-dwell-ers.” The Prophet (sallallahu alayhe wa sallam) loved him very much, and he (Zahir) was an ugly man. One day the Prophet came to him whilst he was sell-ing some goods. He embraced him from behind. The man could not see him, so he said, “Let me go! Who is this?” Then he turned around and recognized the Prophet (sallallahu alayhe wa sallam), so he tried to move closer to him once he knew who it was. The Prophet (sal-lallahu alayhe wa sallam) started to say, “Who will buy this slave?” Zahir said, “O Messenger of Allah , you will find me unsellable.” The Prophet (sallallahu alayhe wa sallam) said, “But in the sight of Allah (subhanahu wa ta`ala) you are not unsellable,” or he said, “But in the sight of Allah (subhanahu wa ta`ala) you are valuable.”

An old woman came to the Prophet

Light Moments with the Prophet and His Companionsthe many delightful stories about their sense of humor reflect the easy-going nature of the first islamic society, and how far removed it was from narrow-mindedness and gloom.

more times the reward according to the Prophet Salallahu ‘alyhi wa sallam, so be happy and hopeful of Allah’s re-ward. When that athaan is called over the loud speaker, make your way to the center of the carnival and let’s re-connect with Allah together. What a beautiful lesson in unity !

#5 Give Special Treatment to Children and EldersThe Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “He is not of us who does not have mercy on young children, nor honor the elderly” (Hadith in Al-Tirmidhi). So, if you see an elder stand-ing in line behind you waiting to order food, give them your spot for the sake of Allah. If you see a child who needs tickets for a ride or who eyes some cot-ton candy but doesn’t have the money, fulfill their desire … today is a day to show your love! Don’t you want the Most Merciful to show mercy to you?

#6 Shop and Get 1,000,000 Good DeedsThere are so many ways to earn bless-ings from Allah, we just need to know about them and then do them. One of the blessing jackpots comes your way each time you go to a marketplace, some place where buying and selling is going on … some place like the Muslim Fun-fest Bazaar ! In an authentic hadith, the Prophet Salallahu ‘alyhi wa sallam said whoever recites the following when en-tering the marketplace will get 1,000,000 blessings ! Say this every time you go through the Funfest bazaar and you will

memorize it Insha’Allah and be on your way to becoming a millionaire!

laa ‘ilaaha ‘illa-llaahu wahdahu laa sha-reeka lahu lahu-lmulku wa lahu-l-ham-du yuhyee wa yumeetu wa huwa hayyun laa yamootu biyadihi-l-khairu wa huwa ‘ala kulli shai ‘in qadeer.

[There is none worthy of worship except Allah, alone, without any partner with Him. For Him is the Dominion and to Him is the praise. He gives life and He brings about death; He is living and does not die. In His hand is all good and He has power over all thiangs]

#7 Look at the Dunya from Way Up HighOften as we go about our lives in the ma-terial world, we lose perspective of its low value. Things that are too close (like the dunya) sometimes make it hard to focus on what is important. At Funfest, take a trip on the Hot Air Balloon or the

Helicopter and look at life from a higher elevation. Take it all in and remember the words of Allah that He doesn’t need us, rather we are the ones who need Him. Allah says: “The creation of the heavens and earth is greater than the creation of mankind, but most of the people do not know.” [Surah Ghafi:57] The more we look at the vastness of Allah’s creation, the more humble we will become.

#8 Resolve to Be Super Kind Today !‘A’isha reported that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “Allah is kind and loves kindness in every matter.” [Agreed upon hadith] Also, Anas reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “Make things easy for people and do not make them difficult. Give good news to people and do not frighten them away.” [Agreed upon ha-dith] So, on this day of relaxation, be relaxed ! No scowling, no snapping,

no raising your voice in anger, no com-plaining, no getting annoyed. Just chill. Smile. Be stress free, and make those around you stress free.

#9 Make A Blessed Transaction at the BazaarHakim Ibn Hizam (May Allah be pleased with him) reported that: Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wassallam) said: “Both parties in a business transaction have a right to annul it so long as they have not separated; and if they tell the truth and make everything clear to each other (i.e., the seller and the buyer speak the truth, the seller with regard to what is purchased, and the buyer with regard to the money) they will be blessed in their transaction, but if they conceal anything and lie, the blessing on their transaction will be eliminated.’’ [Al-Bukhari and Muslim] Make sure our Funfest Bazaar is full of blessings and nothing more !

#10 Lend A Hand to Clean-UpAbu Huraira narrated that the Proph-et Salallahu ‘alyhi wa sallam said: “Sadaqa is due on every joint of a per-son, every day the sun rises. Admin-istering of justice between two men is also a Sadaqa. And assisting a man to ride upon his beast, or helping him load his luggage upon it, is a Sadaqa; and a good word is a Sadaqa; and ev-ery step that you take towards prayer is a Sadaqa, and removing of harmful things from the pathway is a Sadaqa.” [Hadith in Muslim] So, the next time you see some trash on the ground you look at it as a free investment that Allah put in your path. Pick it up and deposit it in your Hereafter account!

the camel is special and amazing, and allah calls our attention to it in his book: “Do they not look at the camels, how they are made?” [Al-Ghaashiyah:17]

guage. The geography and climate have combined to define an entire culture with the camel at its core. This certainly must be seen as high praise of this re-markable animal.

As early as 1800 BC, trade routes from Asia and Africa crossed the Arabian Peninsula carrying spices, incense, gold, ivory, and silk on their way to Europe and the lands of the Fertile Crescent. Camels were used by the Nabateans in the first century BC, on their way from the Gulf of Aqaba to the trading capi-tal of Petra in central Jordan. Camels were used by the Bedouin, whose war-riors formed the nucleus of the Muslim armies that conquered the Byzantine and Persian Empires in the 7th century AD. War, trade, and civilization -- all riding on the back of a hump.

Camel Meat

Although chicken is the most widely consumed domestic meat in Saudi Arabia today, camel meat could be the meat of the future especially in health-conscious Western countries. This is because camel meat has no cholesterol and hardly any fat, since the fat is concentrated in the camel’s hump, which can weigh up to 80 lbs. and can be easily discarded. If a camel’s fat was distributed over it’s body like a humans, it would insulate the body and make it harder to cool down.

MPC – Miles Per Camel

About 90% of the camels in the world today are dromedaries. While the term dromedary is used throughout the world to describe the species in general, the word originally comes from the Greek

“dromos” which means road, and is technically referring to the racing or riding dromedaries. True riding drom-edaries can travel 80 to 120 miles per day carrying a rider. Their cousin drom-edaries (called baggage camels) have a heavier build and are capable of carrying as much as 992 lbs. A baggage camel can travel up to 40 mi. per day, a cara-van will usually average only about 12 mi. per day, depending on how fresh the animals are at the start, and how long the trip is expected to be. They travel

at about 2 mph fully loaded, and 2 1/2 mph unloaded. Camels prefer to walk, particularly when it’s hot; but when speed is required, they either gallop or pace. The pace is a medium-speed movement which uses both legs on one side at a time, this produces a swaying or rocking motion and can make riders “seasick.” This swaying motion is actu-ally where the camel gets its moniker of “ship of the desert.”

How Big Is a Camel?

A mature camel (6-7 years old) weighs between 551 lbs. to 1500 lbs., and stands from 6 ft. to 6 1/2 ft. tall at the shoulders. A camel’s thick wool can make it appear larger, especially dur-ing the winter. Their head and body length is 10 ft., not including a rope like tail which is over 20 in. long.

Sand Shoes

Camels have two toes on each foot, each with a hoof on the front that looks like a toenail. They walk on their toes much like a woman wearing a pair of high heels. But, instead of a heel, a camel has a ball of fat that helps form the soft pad on the bottom of its foot. This pad sup-ports the animal on the sand like a pair of snowshoes, and makes the camel al-most completely silent when it walks and runs.

Body Pads

They also have callous like pads on their chest, the back of their front leg joints, and the front of their back leg joints. These pads cushion the animal when it kneels down and keeps it comfortable while it is resting on the ground, even on hot sand. The pads are made of tough leathery skin that looks as though the hair has been rubbed off. These pads are natural, however, and not a sign of wear. They start developing after the camel is born and become tough at about five months old. To get up, a camel must first straighten its hind legs and then jerked up its front legs. This allows the camel to lie down and get up, even when heav-ily loaded.

Weather-Proof Head

The camel’s head, though small, is one of its most interesting features. It has two large eyes on either side of the head. Each eye is shaded from the noonday sun by a projecting ridge of bone that thick bushy eyebrows sit on.

The eye itself is protected from sand by two rows of extra long eyelashes, one on the upper eyelid, and one on the lower eyelid. In addition to this, each eye also has a very thin third eyelid that moves with a side to side motion, front to back. These can act as a windshield wiper brushing away sand, or can close to protect the eye while still allowing the camel to see.

In this way, a camel can often see well enough to keep walking in the midst of a sandstorm. Glands in the camel’s eye supply a lot of water in order to keep the eye moist under extremely dry condi-tions. Located far back on the head are small rounded ears. These ears are cov-ered in hair, including the inside of the ear, which helps keep out airborne sand and dust. The camel’s valvular nostrils are lined with hair and work on the same principle as the ears to protect it from airborne sand and dust. A camel’s nose is also designed to trap moisture from the lungs when the animal exhales, thereby saving water.

Mouth That Is Rough and ReadyCamels are mobile browsers and have a deeply split upper lip. Their split lip is ideally suited to stripping leaves from even the most prickly trees and shrubs. With their long neck, they can reach 11 1/2 ft. high and can feed on tough thorny plants that even sheep and goats would pass over. They can do this because of stiff hairs on their nose that permit them

to push their way into thorny plants and thick skin inside their mouth that thorns cannot pierce. They also like (even need) extremely salty plants that grow at salt lakes and other locations. Inside the camel’s mouth are 34 strong sharp teeth, that can be used as weapons, as well as for feeding. Although camels will normally select the freshest veg-etation available, when food is scarce, they are omnivore. This means they eat everything, fresh plants, dried plants, bones, fish, meat, leather, and even on occasion their owner’s tent. Camels are called ruminant feeders, because they do not chew their food before swallow-ing it. Instead, later after feeding, they regurgitate some of it (which is now po-litely called cud) and finish chewing it. Then, it’s three chambered stomach can complete the digestion. When a camel cannot find food, it’s hump will shrink, droop to one side, or even slide off the camel’s back to one side. However, the hump will rapidly return to size in a few weeks once the camel finds food.

Drink Up, and Up, and ...

In the wintertime, camels can gather enough moisture from the plants they eat to go as much as 50 days without water. However, in the summertime, they may only go 5 days without water.

Camels have 4 major ways of surviving without water.

1) Camels are capable of losing safely 30% of their body’s weight in water, which would kill any other animal. They can do this because:

--Fluid levels in their circulator system are maintained by taking fluid from the body’s tissues.

--The hydrophilicity (ability to attract water) of a camel’s hemoglobins means

its red blood cells resist dehydration.

--Red blood cells (erythrocytes) are nor-mally circular, except in the family Cam-elidae, where they are oval. These small oval erythrocytes can circulate more eas-ily at increased blood viscosities.

--Camel blood contains 94% water, just like humans. But during dehydration, their blood can lose up to 40% of its water safely. According to doctors, hu-man blood m ust stay very close to 94%

water. If it loses 5% of its water, you go blind; at 10%, you can’t hear and go insane; 12%, and your blood is as thick as molasses. Unable to circulate blood, you’re dead.

In effect, these biomechanisms for cop-ing with dehydration, allow camels to use water in their body tissue as stor-age capacity, because the water can be used without any damage to the camel’s health.

2. Camels are capable of drinking 30 gallons of water in 10 minutes. Scien-tists have even found a camels stomach empty 10 minutes after drinking 20 gal-lons of water. In other animals, drinking that much water would quickly result in water intoxication. This is a dangerous condition, where low electrolyte levels (sodium, etc) in the blood serum cause water to be forced into the body’s cells and tissues through a process called os-mosis. In humans, this electrolyte imbal-ance and tissue swelling can cause an ir-regular heartbeat, allow fluid to enter the lungs, and put pressure on the brain and nerves, which can cause behaviors re-

sembling alcohol intoxication. In severe cases, swelling brain tissue can cause seizures, coma, and ultimately death. This is probably what started the myth that if you let a camel drinking as much as it wants, it will drink itself to death.

But, where does the water go? The water first goes into the bloodstream. The he-moglobins in a camel’s red blood cells are highly hydrophilic (attracts water). This allows them to swell to 240% of their normal size. Amazingly, these he-

moglobins also resist hyperhydration, which helps them avoid severe osmotic problems when the camel drinks a larger amount of water. The blood stream then quickly rehydrates the rest of the body’s tissues. Contrary to the popular myth, only about a gallon and a half of water is stored in special sacks within a camel’s stomach. This is a very limited amount of water and is not the camels main stor-age device.

3. Camels minimize water loss through their waste. The camel’s kidneys can concentrate their urine to the consisten-cy of syrup with twice the salt content of sea water. And, their fecal pellets are so dry that they can be used for cooking fuel immediately after voiding.

4. Camels do not sweat, instead they al-low their body temperature to rise and fall from 97.7-107.6°F (36.5-42°C)! That’s 10° F (5.5°C)! In humans, an in-crease of only 2°F (1°C) is a sign of ill-ness; and, a core temperature rise of 6°F (3 °C) will result in vital organ damage and eventually death.

5. Camels can drink brackish or salty water that would be unfit for most other animals.

Chill, Camel Dude

The camel keeps as cool as it can by rest-ing when the weather is extremely hot, and feeding at night or in the morning. It will lay down in a shady place, if it can find one, or face in the direction of the sun to minimize how much of its body is exposed to the rays. During the heat of the day, a group of camels may press against each other, because their body temperatures are lower than the air temperature. [44] In captivity, a camel will usually work only six months of the year. They will become ill or die, if too much work is demanded from them.

Camel Wool

Camel wool is a high quality fiber used in the Arab world for rug making and clothing. Camels molt in the spring and a new coat is regrown by autumn. The average annual wool output per camel, is 7.23 lbs. for a male, and 4.63 lbs. for a female. Dromedary wool possesses sev-eral valuable properties in today’s mar-kets, such as low heat conductivity, soft-ness, and strength. Camel wool may be manufactured into a wide range of warm fabrics. A camel’s fur may be shades of brown, nearly white to almost black.

Vitamin C Rich Camel Milk

A camel with well-formed udders may produce 8-10.6 gal. a day. Camels can give milk even under harsh conditions; and, unlike dairy cows, do not need much or any supplements to do so. A camel can produce 5.28 gal. of milk a day without drinking any water for up to 10 days! Camel milk is chemically similar to cattle milk, but has a higher proportion of vitamin C. It also has more fat, protein, and minerals than either cow’s or goat’s milk.

(sallallahu alayhe wa sallam) and said: “O Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah (subhanahu wa ta`ala) that I will enter Paradise.” He said jokingly, “O Mother of So-and-so, no old women will enter Paradise.” The old woman went away crying, so the Prophet (sallallahu alayhe wa sallam) said, “Tell her that she will not enter Paradise as an old woman, for Allah (subhanahu wa ta`ala) says: (We have created [their Companions] of spe-cial creation, and made them virgin-pure [and undefiled]) [Quran 56:35-36].” [Reported by al-Tirmidhi, it is hasan be-cause of the existence of corroborating reports. The point here is that Allah’s will change the people in Paradise to their youthful state.]

On Your Mark, Get Set ...

One of the ahadith that reflects the prophet’s (sallallahu alayhe wa sallam) sense of humor and enjoyment of fun is the report that imaam ahmad gives from ‘a’ishah who said: “i went out with the prophet on a journey. At that time i was a young girl and was quite slender. The

prophet told the people, ‘go on ahead,’ so they went ahead, then he said to me, ‘come, let us have a race.’ So i raced with him, and i won. He let the matter rest until i had gained weight. Later, i ac-companied him on another journey. He told the people, ‘go on ahead,’ so they went ahead. He said to me, ‘come, let us have a race.’ So i raced with him, and he won. He began to laugh, and said, ‘this is for that.”’

The sahabah saw nothing wrong with joking or having fun, as they saw the prophet (sallallahu alayhe wa sallam) , their leader and teacher, occasionally doing so.

The many delightful stories about their sense of humor reflect the easy-going nature of the first islamic society, and how far removed it was from narrow-mindedness and gloom.

In al-adab al-mufrad, imaam bukhari re-ports from bakr ibn ‘abdillah who said:

“The companions of the prophet used to throw melon-rinds at one another, but when the matter was serious, they were the only true men.”

This is moderate, islamically acceptable humor, which does not go beyond the bounds of truth, or lessen the gravitas or manhood of a person. Rather, it serves its purpose of refreshing hearts and minds.

An example of the sahabah’s sense of humor, which made the prophet (sallal-lahu alayhe wa sallam) laugh, is the re-port given by imam ahmad from umm. Salamah (radhiallahu `anha). Abil bakr (radhiallahu `anhu) went to do business in busra, and with him were nu’ayman and suwaybit ibn harmalah (radhial-lahu `anhuma), both of whom had been present at badr. Suwaybit was in charge of food on the journey, and nu’ayman said to him, “feed me!” Suwaybit said, “not until abu bakr (radhiallahu `anhu) comes.” Nu’ayman was a fun-loving man with a sense of humor, so he went to some people who had brought live-stock with them, and said, “will you buy a sturdy arab slave from me?” They said, “yes.” He said, “he has a big mouth, and he may tell you that he is a free man. If that means that you do not want to take him, then forget the matter, and do not cause trouble for me with him.” They said, “no problem, we will buy him.” So they bought him for ten young she-camels. Nu’ayman brought the animals back, and told the people: “there he is!”

Suwaybit said: “i am a free man!” They said, “he has already told us all about you,” and put a rope around his neck and led him away. Then abu bakr came, and was told what had happened. He and his companions went and returned the ani-mals and took suwaybit back. They told the prophet (sallallahu alayhe wa sallam) what had happened, and he and his sa-habah would laugh about the story for a year afterwards.

A bedouin came to the prophet (sallal-

lahu alayhe wa sallam). He entered the mosque and left his camel in the court-yard. Some of his companions said to nu’ayman ibn ‘amr al-ansari, who was known as al-nu’ayman: “if you slaugh-ter it, we will eat it, because we want to have some meat, and the messenger of allah will pay for it.” So al-nu’ayman slaughtered it. Then the bedouin came out and saw his saddle, so he shouted, “they have slaughtered my camel, o mu-hammad!” The prophet (sallallahu alay-he wa sallam) came out and asked: “who did this?” They said, “al-nu’ayman.” So he went looking for him, and found him at the home of duba’ah bint al-zubayr ibn ‘abdul muttalib (radhiallahu `anha), where he had hidden in a ditch and cov-ered himself with palm branches and leaves. A man pointed to where he was and said, loudly, “i have not seen him, o messenger of allah.” The prophet (sallal-lahu alayhe wa sallam) brought him out of the ditch, and his face was dirty from where the leaves had fallen on him. The prophet (sallallahu alayhe wa sallam) asked him, “why did you do that?” Al-nu’ayman said: “the ones who told you where i was, o messenger of allah, are the same ones who told me to do it.” The prophet (sallallahualayhe wa sallam) be-gan wiping his face and laughing, then he paid the price of the slaughtered cam-el. [See hayat as sahabah, 3/154, 155]

There is no clearer indication than these and similar reports of the lightheart-edness and sense of humor that islam wants its followers to have. These quali-ties will make a person good-natured and likeable, which will enable him to win people’s hearts. No one needs such characteristics more than the muslim who seeks to call others to islam.-------------------------------------------Source: adapted from www.Turntoislam.Comv

Muslim Funfest Provides Free Wristbands to Over 600 Needy Children

By Funfest Times Staff

(Clarksburg, MD - May 28, 2011) While planning for this year’s Muslim Funfest carnival, theorganizing team debated on pricing for rides, and especially for the unlimited rides wristband. If theprice was too high, the community wouldn’t come out, especially given the many parents out of workdue to the weak economy. If the price was too low, the annual carnival wouldn’t be able to pay for itself. They decided on $21, a price they felt was somewhere in the middle.

But what about those children from single parent households where even

money for food and clothing is hard to come by? According to area zakat and social service committees at masa-jid in the region, there are hundreds of families who receive zakat assistance throughout the year, and many of these families have several young children. The Muslim Funfest wristbands would be out of reach for these families, and these families would be left out of the region’s only large scale annual Mus-lim carnival.

But then Muslim Funfest organizers came up with an idea. For masajid that sponsor the Muslim Funfest, organiz-ers would donate 25 wristbands to

be given exclusively to that masjid’s needy children.

“It was a win-win-win situation, alhum-dulillah. For the needy children, they get to take part in the fun along with the rest of the community ... [and] for the masajid, they get to service their families throughtheir zakat committees … [and] for Muslim Funfest, we ensure the carnival is open to everyone,” said Zafer Eroglu, one of the organizers of Muslim Funfest. Over 600 free wrist-bands were made available through the charitable partnership, alhumdulillah.

The overwhelming majority of area

masajid sponsored Muslim Funfest. At least one masjid that did not spon-sor the carnival received 25 wrist-bands anyway.

“We really don’t want to leave anyone out because of money. This carnival is not about money, it’s about fami-lies coming together, being grateful to Allah, and having a good time in a clean, positive environment,” said Jameel Khan, another Muslim Fun-fest organizer. “It’s an honor for us to be in a position where we can bring a day of joy into a child’s life, and we thank Allah for putting us in that position,” he added.

Muslim Funfest Hosts America’s Islamic Heritage MuseumAmazing Facts about the Earliest Muslims Shows Many Were from DC AreaIn 1730 Ayuba (Job) Suleiman Diallo, a well educated Muslim merchant was kidnaped and enslaved from 1730-1733. Job ibn Solomon Dgiallo (Jallo) came from Bundu, Senegal. He was captured in 1730 in Gambia and brought to Annapo-lis, MD in 1731, where he was delivered to Mr. V. Denton, factor to Mr Hunt. Mr Denton sold Job to Mr. Alexander Tol-sey in Kent Island in Maryland. He was a Fulani who lived near the banks of the

Gambia river in Senegal. Job was one of the first Muslims written about in Amer-ica. While in Maryland Job wrote a letter to his father, which came to the atten-tion of James Oglethorpe, the founder of Georgia, who helped purchase his free-dom and sent him to London where he was finally set free and sent back home to work for the Royal African Company of London in his homeland. While in London Job wrote down three copies of

the Quran from memory.

In 1767, Kunta Kinte was captured and enslaved. Kunta Kinte was a Muslim born in 1750, in the village of Juffure in Gambia. He was shipped to Annapolis, Maryland on the ship Lord Ligonier and sold to a Virginia planter. Kunta Kinte fought hard to hold on to his Islamic heritage. Having learned the Qur’an as a boy Kunta scratched Arabic phrases in

the dirt and tried to pray every day after he arrived in America. Kunta Kinte was Alex’s Haley Mandingo forbearer, who he talks about in his book Roots.
