THE LEARNER’S DEVELOPMENT AND ENVIRONMENT

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course is designed to help the Field Study Students observe actual

learning environment. It requires them to identify approaches that would

make learning more meaningful through the different phases of the learners’

development and social context.

GENERAL OBJECTIVE:

1. Identify the physical, motor, linguistic, literacy, cognitive, social, and

emotional development of the children or adolescent ass manifested in the

actual classroom setting.

2. Observe and reflect on the different approaches employed by the

teacher in facilitating learning among the students.

3. Describe how the schools develop among the students social skills

that enable them to become law-abiding members of the society.

The School as Learning Environment

Page 3: fs 1 porfolio

I am grateful that I visited Doña Rosario Elementary School as my

cooperating school. The school is located in Doña Rosario Subdivision,

Novaliches, Quezon City. A ride from tricycle will do in order to bring you

there to the said scholastic institution. The school location is located on

residential area wherein intellectual, social, moral and physical aspects of

development of a learner will be guided accordingly. Classrooms, offices, and

buildings are conducive for student learning. It develops students’ social

interactions. Conducive physical learning Environment is safe, clean, and

orderly. Beautification and cleanliness were undertaken on this school by

making it cleaner and greener. The school is composed of three and a four

storey building which occupy the classrooms, offices, and laboratories. Both

offices were clean, and structurally organized. There is another building

which is currently under construction to meet the needs of the students for

learning.

Doña Rosario Elementary School is under the management and

leadership of Mrs. Rosario J. Sicam as Principal III.

rows depending on the number of the students and the desk are not properly

cleaned and even vandalism can be observed. The blackboard is wide

provided for teacher and for the student’s stability and value of focus to

learning. The materials or the visual aids which are used by the teacher are

Page 7: fs 1 porfolio

written legibly for the students to learn. They are mounted in the blackboard

facing the learner’s together. The ceiling is good helping the teacher to

interact with each other by covering the inner surface of the roof to maintain

the ventilation. It has also ceiling fans to aid ventilation.

1. Can you consider the school environment you just observed

conducive for learning? Why? Why not?

Conductive classroom and school atmosphere contributes to the

learning of the students. Such classrooms have proper ventilation,

well-lighted and free from noise. If the school campus is conducive as

well as the classroom, the attention of the students will become

focused on the lesson. They will learn easily and comfortable. Physical

condition of the classroom is not only to be considered as conducive.

Teacher strategies are also factor to be considered. If the teacher

uses novelty of instructional materials the pupils will become

attentive to listen and learn. If there is a mastery of subject matter

the lesson will have a sense of direction that leads to better learning

of acquired knowledge, skills and values. I do consider the

environment that Doña Rosario Elementary School had is conducive

for learning.

Page 8: fs 1 porfolio

2. What are the characteristics of a classroom that is conducive to

learning?

The kinds of classroom that are conducive to learning has the following

characteristics:

A high performance school seeks and provides adequate space and

opportunities for students and teachers to spread out, reflect, interact,

exchange information, examine and test ideas.

The appearance of the school is inviting. Students, teachers, and the

local community want it to be there.

The school/classroom has adequate natural lighting that enhances productivity.

The school strives for student-friendly conditions throughout the building.

The school/classroom is inviting to good teachers and supports their retention.

The school/classroom is clean and sanitary.

The risk of an adverse health effect is very small.

The school/classroom is designed to reduce stress. It is comfortable, has a

consistent temperature, and manageable noise.

Diversity of Learners

Page 9: fs 1 porfolio

(Learner’s characteristics and needs)

(In order to complete the series of activities on this field study course, I

have to do this Learning Activity 2 again. The Actual output/manuscript on

this activity was already passed to our subject professor.)

The students that I was observed in this episode are the grade II and VI

pupils and a 2nd year high school student. In terms of physical domain, the

students were move clumsy and smooth. Students are good in writing and

drawing. In terms of social domain, they have good interactions with their

teacher. They help each other to answer their exercises. They are concern to

each other. In terms of emotional, they are serious every time they have a

class lesson. And in terms of Cognitive domain, they comprehend easily by

the help of their teacher.

I recall my own experiences when I was at this age, my teacher in

math helps me a lot to widen my knowledge. The students that I was

observed are similar to our batch when we were at this age because they are

also disciplined by their teacher. I could relate it to the theory of

development by Erickson-Psychosocial because in this theory I learned a lot

like knowing who I really am; I know how to discipline myself. I learned that

life should be always positive. It helps me and guides me as a future teacher

to know the development of the students.

PreschoolAge range of learner’s observed 5-6.

-Like to move a lot and play.

-They like to draw.

-They like to sing and dance.

-Therefore, teachers should not expect preschoolers to stay seated for a long period of time.

-Therefore, the teacher should let the pupils to draw and assist them.

-Therefore, the teachers should find ways on how to develop their talents. He should allow them to show it and encourage them in participating in different activities where in they can show their talents.

ElementaryAge range of learner’s observed 7-8.

-Elementary pupils have different learning abilities such as dancing, singing, drawing, and are hungry of learning.

-They are keen observers.

-Therefore the teacher should provide different activities for them. He/she should also have different kind of approach for the diverse learning abilities of the pupils

-Therefore, the teacher should be aware of what he is teaching and be carefu l  of   the way he/she present things.- therefore,   the teacher  shouldalways master his/her subject matter before conducting his/her class the next day

High school Age range of learner’s observed 15-16.

-high schools develop mind and are competent on the different learning activities.

-Therefore, teachers should provide different teaching approaches and should use an advance way of teaching that is equipped on their age.

(This part of the study was not undertaken at the Doña Rosario Elementary School)

1. While you were observing the learners, did recall your own experiences when you were their age? What similarities or differences do you have with the learners you observed?

Page 13: fs 1 porfolio

As I observed the learners, I can reminisce the past experiences when I was at their age. Way back in my elementary years, I was so naughty yet very participative in the class discussion. I lead some naughty friend of mine too. Sometimes, we don’t enter classes and just hanging around to where we could climb fruit trees. But during exams, I always got the higher score than with my friends. I never study but still I learn in the discussion because I listen and I was so behave before when the class is going on.

As to what the learner of my age today, I should say that some of them can’t read well and fluently. Some of them can’t write legibly.

Classroom Management and Learning

As I observed the class, the learners were very active; they are

well-concentrated with their lesson. The classroom organization and routine

Page 14: fs 1 porfolio

affect the learners’ behavior by following the rules and procedures of the

classroom. The teacher have in mind when she designs the classroom

organizations and routines should be the students become knowledgeable

and skilled, organized a comfortable and pleasant physical environment for

ease in mobility and flow of learning activities. The behavior strategies were

effective in managing the behavior of the learners in following the routines,

sensitive to positive and negative interactions in order to maintain discipline

and orderliness in the classroom.

Learners were arranged in accordance to where they are comfortable

to sit with. There are also posted schedule for daily clean-up of the

classroom, rules and regulation however were not so determine by posting it

on the wall but determined by observing how they are interacted with each

other as well as to their teacher. One example is that, learners know how to

raise their hands when they know the answer. Because, if they don’t know,

the class will be noisy. The routines and procedures that I consider for this

level to discipline them and to maintain the cleanliness of the classroom are

daily attendance, prayers, keeping tables and chairs in order before leaving,

cleaning blackboard to be ready for next topic and cleaning stains or drops

after the lesson.

Classroom Management Matrix

Aspect of classroom Management

Description Effect on the learners

1. Specific areas in the classroom

A storage drawer that store the booklet for the students.

They will learn how to make their things organize.

2. Classroom rules Their classroom rules are encoded.

They will understand how the rules and regulations govern

Page 15: fs 1 porfolio

the entire class and it should be follow

3. daily routines Checking assignments. To monitor if they have learn remembered the past lessons.

4. Seating arrangement

Their seating arrangement are mixed(boys/girls)

They are comfortable studying on their chosen seating.

5. Handling misbehavior/off task behavior.

The students are reprimanded

They will be able to realize their mistakes.

6. Reinforcement of positive behavior

The students are given phrases.

The students will be motivated in the pursuit of their learning.

What is the basis of the classroom organization and routine?

The classroom organization and routines serves as their guide

inside the classroom and how to organize the flow of the classroom

system. Routines will also develop their personality like the spiritual

aspect in prayer, physical aspect in exercise, 3 mental aspects in

the form of recitation and motivations. I should say that the teacher

(Mrs. Alicia U. Bernales) is knowledgeable in different multiple

intelligences and that she knows the strength and weaknesses

of the student. With that, individual differences of the learners were

determined and had given attention to enhance their capabilities

and make their weakness a strength.

1. Imagine yourself organizing your classroom in the future. In what

grade level do you see yourself? What routines would you consider

for this level? Why?

Page 16: fs 1 porfolio

Even though I observed a class of Grade II at Doña Rosario

Elementary School, since I’m a BSEd Social studies major student I

imagine myself organizing my own classroom in the future and I

would like to teach a 2 n d year to fourth year level

because i t i s more appropriate for me and I’m capable of

this level. For me, it is not so hard to discipline

these students  and teach

them.  Such rout ines  and procedures  I  wi l l  cons ider  are

Conducting prayers, checking of attendance, checking of

assignment, review of previous lesson, and open a new

lesson. Such routines also are exposing learners to music, hands-

on activities, drill and etc. I would like also to be their classroom adviser to

take part in their emotional and moral development.

2. Should learners be involved in making the class rules? Why?

The learners should be involved in planning and in making of the

classroom procedure so that they will be able to make adjustments and

adapt to changes. Furthermore, they will be able to express their

thoughts and feelings regarding the planned procedures. For an

instance, if the students follow the seating arrangement

alphabetically, in which the shortest among the group is also the one

whose seat is on the last chair, if this is the case, it is unfair to the one

who is the shortest in the class. To solve this, the seating arrangement

should be in an increasing height manner. Thus, an agreement

between the educator and the learners is significant to have a competent

class.

Learning Activities and Learning Process

Page 17: fs 1 porfolio

Instructional Activities Observed

Observation Notes

Drill on the core of the subject matter

-Learners actively participates on the drill wherein teacher chooses to have a multiplication contest between boys and girls using flash card

Motivation on subject matter

-The teacher uses multiplication wheel to motivate learners in absorbing the concepts of multiplication.

Introducing subject matter (multiplying 2 digit multiplicand with 1 digit multiplier)

-the teacher easily input the system of multiplying 2 digit with 1 digit multiplier since the students had already known the concept of multiplication

Exercises -most of the students answer the exercises correctly. The class has 91% learning of the subject matter. They could follow simple instructions

Assessment of the behavior of the student

-Teacher assesses the behavior of the student by giving a star to the row of most behaved students.

Eyes breaker/intermission

-students sung an action song to help them ready for answering the exercises

Assessment of the learning competencies of the learners

-Mrs. Bernales allows the student to check their own paper and giving the honest judgment and assess what percentage of the class grasp the subject matter.

Giving of assignments -teacher give simple instruction and the learners follows, it means that they are well disciplined

Page 18: fs 1 porfolio

The students I observed are the groups that interact more with their

teacher than others. They behaved and interacted differently. All in the

groups participated actively. Only few students ask for most help. When the

students are called by their teacher, and cannot answer the teachers’

question, their classmates try to help each other.

I am proud with their teacher because of her ability to make them

disciplined. I feel a sense of oneness or unity among the learners and

between the teacher and learners because they are all cooperate. As a

future teacher, I want the learners interact in a good way. I will encourage all

learners to interact and participate with my class by calling their attention

and making them as one.

As future educator, and given a chance to teach in the class of Grade

under Mrs. Bernales, I would do such things also because all aspect of

learning was emphasized in a single subject matter. I will do the same thing

for I adore the techniques that she uses.

Complete the lead statement:

Page 19: fs 1 porfolio

I used to think that knowledge is general awareness or possession

of information, facts, ideas, truths or principles.

After doing this observation, I now think that knowledge is an

overall awareness of intellectual, emotional, psychological and behavioral

approach of a learner.

From the experience, I feel that being a teacher is not a joke

profession for we are going to mould the entire personality of our students,

we should be equipped with vast knowledge and training together with

professional etiquette we should carry to ourselves.

If only appropriate teaching strategies and appropriate methods of

teaching will be determined to use in a certain situation of teaching –learning

process, adequate knowledge will be imparted to the learners.

Home-School Link

Describe any tasks or non school-related tasks assigned to

the pupil while at home.

Most of the learners when given instruction at home were passive.

They tend to follow orders if there are rewards or presumed punishment if

they are not going to follow. On the other hand, if discipline and behavioral

Page 20: fs 1 porfolio

management were imposed to the learners, they tend to be organized and

have an open communication to their parents if they are having told so to do

their specified tasks. Let as take this as an example, Pedro was scolded by

his mother for not washing dishes after dinner, Pedro would not take the

scold since he insist that his older sister Lina should wash dishes for it is

LIna’s schedule to wash dishes and not him. In this example we can see that

if there is management and rules to follow at home, rules and management

in school is easily to be followed by the learners.

Who assist hem/her in doing assignments?

Most of the learners now a day have tutors to aid in their

assignments and cognitive development. But not all can afford to pay for

tutorials or a nanny to do so, common families expect mothers to be well

educated and well rounded on the intellectual, moral, emotional and

behavioral even spiritual development of the entire family. In this social

setting, we are hoping that mothers should do their responsibilities as

mother as they can be. The great challenge on this aspect of home-school

link was the so called “pabaya” mother. With this kind of parenting, more

children were not being a good citizen of the Philippines. And more “sakit ng

ulo” of the teacher would prevail in a classroom setting.

What time does the pupil perform her assignments, if any?

Dinner is the most important meal bonding of the family, it is where

the family talks a lot of things, advices were given, faults were corrected and

plans were exposed. Most of the learners had their time doing assignments

after dinner and before going to bed. It is believe to be perfect time in

assisting all aspect of learner’s development and make him understand the

things associated with it.

Page 21: fs 1 porfolio

Describes how the learners motivated to do his/her assignment

at home?

Motivation process involved many theories and application, most of the

parents motivates their children to do assignments and tasks by following

Thorndike’s theory of reward and punishment. But this is not applicable to all

learners, some learners need cuddling in order to let him follow you orders,

other need much attention as your motivation and some easily follow for

they feel they are responsible enough for their assignments and tasks.

As a future teacher, how would you establish relationship with

the parents?

As a future teacher, I could establish good home-school

relationship by conducting meeting once a month among the parents regarding

the performance of their child. I will make counseling to them together

with their child. By this, I will be able to inform them about the progress

and failure of their children. In return, they could help me by encouraging their

children to study at home and discipline their child to behave in school. If given a time I

could also visit their home for further help on intellectual aspect of the children.
