FROM THE RECTOR
Dear Friends,
Our Annual Par-
ish meeting is
set for January
24th. Many of
you know about
t he exce l lent
Oyster Roast
and BBQ that
fo llo ws the
meeting—and we all look forward
to that—however, I also look for-
ward to the Annual Meeting as a
time of celebrating what God has
done in our midst in the previous
year—and sharing about what lies
on the horizon for 2016. Please
make time to be with us that morn-
ing, as we not only celebrate and
eat well, but we will also share our
mission priorities for 2016, and
elect new vestry members.
Also, Lent begins early this year
(February 10th) and we’d like for
you to consider taking on a specific
Lenten discipline this year—and
join your fellow parishioners on a 4
-week Lenten journey of study and
prayer. The format for this will be
groups meeting either in parishion-
er homes or at Galilee, where you
can get to know other parishioners,
try your hand at reading the bible
in a group, and learn more about
praying as a daily habit. For some
this will be new and for others it
will be old-hat, but I hope that eve-
ryone will share in this parish-wide
journey.
Warmly,
Father Buchanan+

will follow the theme of “The Jesus Movement”, as suggested by our
new Presiding Bishop, Michael Curry.

SENIOR WARDEN REPORT
Are you getting the most out of life?
Take advantage of the great learning
opportunities here! Start with adult
education between services. You owe
it to yourself and to God to learn
more about Him.
If you truly believe, can there be any
more important topics than: the God
who created everything, how to be in
true and closer relationship with Him,
and our eternal destiny? If you doubt,
can there be anything more important
than examining the evidence and re-
ceiving the information that can lead
to a deeper understanding and more
informed choice on these high stakes
questions? Such growth also im-
proves your joy and your life here and
now, not just in the next life.
Here at Galilee through adult educa-
tion, sermons, small group bible
study, retreats, pilgrimage, Alpha, and
other church courses, I have learned a
great deal. More importantly, I have
been inspired to put what I learn into
practice more during my time in this
church than at any other, which has
made my own life more joyful.
Like anyone, I have plenty more I can
and should do to be a better follower.
But, my failings are not for lack of
good instruction or a watered-down
presentation of Truth. All parishion-
ers here have plenty of chances to
hear the bible taught well, see people
in real relationship with their Creator,
and see the gospel lived. We are also
encouraged to tap into the awesome
power of prayer all the time here.
Not all are cured, and not all are
cured immediately, but we can show
you many testimonials of cures that
have occurred physically, mentally or
spiritually from prayer here. All of
them cannot be the product of auto-
suggestion or the placebo effect.
Too many people I believe to be
honest, including myself, have been
cured.
Not every church is good at offering
all the essentials. Galilee is. Frankly,
I am not sure that lifelong parishion-
ers ever get to see enough of other
churches to appreciate what God has
developed here. I have lived in about
four other relatively wealthy com-
munities where the churches insisted
upon good preachers and tried hard
to offer great programs. Nothing
compares to Galilee.
It has been an incredible blessing to
have been so well served by Galilee,
and to repay some of that service as
your Senior Warden this past year.
I thank all the lifelong parishioners
who stuck by Galilee through good
and bad times so that this Church
would still be here, and I thank all
the new parishioners who pitch in
gladly to keep us strong. We are one
of the very few growing Episcopal
churches. May our church always
remain in His favor and be attentive
to His will. May we never stop learn-
ing about Him.
-Ben Unkle
Senior Warden
Lent is coming soon and the big ques-
tion everyone ask is "What are you
given up for Lent?" Instead of giving
up something... Consider giving in to
something that draws us closer to
God? Try a Lent Group!
2016 Lent Groups
Galilee Church is encouraging every-
one to join a Lent group (8-10 people)
for 4 weeks starting February 14. All
Groups will last 90 minutes and will
have a facilitator leader. The groups
will be a chance to build friendships
and to grow spiritually during Lent.
Each group will be given the same
study guide by Father Andy. The
groups will meet either in Home or at
Galilee Church where childcare will
be offered. To sign up, visit our web-
site or look for forms in the church
office. Questions? Contact Ruth Wil-
kins at [email protected].

BEACH HOUSE UPDATE With Appreciation & An Invitation
The HEARTWARMING Beach
House November and December
clothing drive has been a huge suc-
cess thanks to your kind donations of
nice coats, jackets, scarves, hats,
gloves and boots. The Beach House
members have been delighted with
these special gifts and have expressed
their sincere appreciation. Additional
thanks go to the Women of Galilee
for their WARM support as well as
for the Harvest Bazaar donations to
Beach House.
The Galilee Advocates for Mental
Health have selected Beach House as
a Community Outreach Program.
This 30 year old city program offers
those struggling with mental illness a
Monday through Saturday clubhouse
setting where the participants work
together in helping provide socializa-
tion, education, employment, meals
and a thrift shop for all. Each plays a
role in creating this Home Away from
Home community.
With our outreach to Beach House,
we would like to encourage Galilee
members to help volunteer at Beach
House on Magic Hollow Boulevard
off Lynnhaven Parkway with tutor-
ing, socialization, and special needs.
The most important opportunity is
providing part time employment.
Beach House is a remarkable LOCAL
resource for families struggling with
mental health concerns. We have in-
vited Beach House to present a pro-
gram at Galilee the last Sunday in
January.
Please join us!

IMPRESSIONS OF THE
BOARDWALK MINISTRY
Nov. 28, 2015
Alice Mullen Drake
(Alice Drake was on the Boardwalk
on Saturday, November 28, 2015,
when a group from Galilee, along
with members of several churches,
took the prayer ministry to the street.
This article describes her impres-
sions...)
The choreography of the entire
morning was stunning to me. I have
seen something like it recently in an
Emergency Room when a well
trained team was working to save
someone’s life. The activity was so
well defined in that emergency room
that it allowed me to be helpful in ad-
dition to the medical staff. I was able
to slip in to help with disrobing the
patient and collect belongings for safe
keeping without getting in the way. I
was a calculated factor in that chore-
ography on that day.
Later I discovered that the entire ER
team were believers and prayed to-
gether before each shift. No wonder
they were so effective, and that they
accepted my presence as helpful.
Usually you get kicked out of a treat-
ment room in an emergency.
Yesterday, I had the same feeling. I
moved when I felt compelled to move
and prayed as I was led as best I
could. I noticed how the Prayer team
members were moving into and out of
different groups. I noticed how fluid
and beautiful it became. I noticed that
I was also moving when I was com-
pelled to do intercessory prayer. I
watched closely when Tears became
one of the most beautiful transform-
ing Smiles I have ever seen. I
watched as your team went from
praying with a person to doing inter-
cessory prayer, to inviting people for
a warm drink and some snacks. It was
a divine choreography on Satur-
day and it was beautiful.

RZIM offers the following descrip-
tion of the event:
“In the United States today, as in all
Western countries, there are grow-
ing Muslim communities. Increas-
ingly many of us have Muslim
neighbors and coworkers. Moreo-
ver, radical Islam is on the move
around the globe in ways we were
woken up to on 9/11, and are con-
stantly reminded of in global news
stories. These developments provide
the church with many evangelistic,
apologetic, social and political chal-
lenges. We are so glad that you are
joining with RZIM in recognizing
and seeking to respond to these chal-
lenges biblically and thoughtfully.
RZIM regularly gathers some of the
world’s leading Christian scholars
researching Islam, as well as some of
the greatest contemporary apologists
to Muslims. Our speakers represent a
wide range of backgrounds – includ-
ing former Muslims – and bring a
wealth of academic and international
ministry experience. Their teaching
sessions are designed to take us on a
journey covering many of the key
issues in the Christian encounter with
Islam. As always with RZIM, these
conferences will marry apologetic
rigor with gospel passion.”

PETALS
Flower Power recently made a deliv-
ery to Anne Perry, who is home fol-
lowing a long period of rehab as the
result of a fall.
Anne said the Altar Flowers were
beautiful but she especially enjoyed
the nice visit! The volunteer was a
prospective member of Galilee who
even brought her young son. Anne
said it brightened up her day.
