Magpies

Each year July marks the start of thebreeding season for magpies. It is from thistime that the male magpie will begin todefend the nest. Magpies do this byswooping anyone who is within around 110metres from the nest and further if you areon a bike. However this swooping generally

only lasts from when the eggs are laid until the young leave thenest, which is usually around six to eight weeks.

To help stay safe during this time here are somehelpful hints:

Wear a hat and sunglasses or just hold something like aschool bag or umbrella over your head.

Some magpies only swoop at cyclists. If you get off your bikeand walk, the magpie should leave you alone.

‘Spike up’ your bike helmet with a few cable ties to scaremagpies away.

Magpies are less likely to swoop if you walk in a group. Teamup with others if you walk through a nesting area.

Watch magpies. If they know they’re being watched they areless likely to swoop.

Don’t fight back. Throwing sticks at a magpie will only make itmore defensive next time.

Never approach a young magpie that’s out of the nest. Theparents may think you’re trying to harm it. Rescuing babymagpies is best left for wildlife rescue groups to carry out afterdark.

The Australian Magpie is a native Australian bird and isprotected under the State Wildlife Legislation – NatureConservation Act 1992. It is a serious offence to harm magpiesand penalties apply for attempting to harm them.

This week the year 6 students used rice, seaweed and otheringredients to create their own Japanese lunch box mealscalled Obento. The students were very creative with theirdesigns, it was almost a shame to eat them! We all thoroughlyenjoyed this experience which was only made possible by thewonderful parent helpers who gave their time to assist in ourJapanese classes. Arigatou Gozaimasu.
